Island Chaptal—nerdy IT engineer by day, romance novel junkie by night—just walked into her messy New York apartment to find Mr. Right waiting for her. No, wait…Mr. Clean.
A gentleman professional killer with a bad case of OCD and zero tolerance for unsorted laundry, March isn’t there to kill her…yet. He wants the diamond her late mother stole for a sinister criminal organization. Island agrees to help him find it, facing the kind of adversaries who dismember first and ask questions later. Good thing she’s got March to show her the ropes. And the guns. And the knives.
The buttoned-up Island is soon having a blast racing from Paris to Tokyo following the clues in her mother’s will, and for the first time, she’s ready to get close to someone. But falling for a hit man may be the very definition of loving dangerously...
In a fresh, witty series that blends fast-moving action with romantic suspense, a romance book–addicted computer engineer and a charming, cleaning-obsessed professional killer team up to take on the bad guys…and forge a highly unconventional working relationship. With a splash of James Bond’s sophistication and a heaping helping of Stephanie Plum’s spunkiness, Camilla Monk’s Spotless series combines high stakes and plenty of humor with lushly exotic settings and a funny, relatable heroine readers can’t help but cheer for.
This boxed set contains: Book #1 - Spotless Book #2 - Beating Ruby Book #3 - Crystal Whisperer
Camilla Monk is a Canadian author who rose to dubious fame with a romantic suspense series starring an OCD-ridden hitman and a wide array of strange and occasionally angry animals. These days she shares her writing time between high-octane adventures in the same vein and fantasy, her secret love (but with weird animals, too.)
She grew up in Paris in a Franco-American family, has lived in Tokyo, and spent ten years in advertising, building rickety websites for M&A boutiques and hedge funds. All of that somehow landed her in Montréal, where she keeps a close watch on the squirrels and complains on a daily basis about the egregious number of Tim Hortons.
I told myself that I would just read one at a time and take breaks in between each instalment. Then, I got it and found that it was split up into 5 downloads ... AND ... each download isn't each instalment. So, because the first instalment finished in the second download, I HAD TO GO ON!
Days later and I am one very satisfied listener. Camilla Monk, with Amy McFadden, gave me one heck of a ride. I absolutely LOVE the Spotless series already, the audiobooks just enhanced my love to ADORATION 😍
Amy McFadden brought Island Chaptal to life for me and gave a voice to some of my very favourite characters. March, Dries, Phyllis and Joy were perfectly represented, and I could always tell when the characters had changed and who they changed to. The acting was memorable.
Spotless is funny, a little kooky and very entertaining. If you would like to read my more thorough reviews on each instalment...
3.75-4 stars for book 1. I read this for a book club. I will finish up the series another time. Great writing. Quirky characters. I should take the time to read through since it's not a standalone.
Holy cow I am in love with this series. March and Island are going to combust soon. That ending on book three.. Dead in a casket. Five stars. Can not wait for book four
James Bond adventure from female POV with slow burn romance
The first few books kept me up late at night. The main character is feisty and sounds like a young twenty-something or younger sometimes. She doesn’t want to die a virgin, but plot twists keep the hormones simmering for several books. The main hero is rather stoic, and his POV is not included, except maybe briefly before book 4, and then it’s morbid on-the-job assassin dastardly deeds I’d rather not have read about. He has OCD, is protective, has a fondness for our femme fatale, but he does put her in her place...like in the trunk?!...when she gets too pushy.
The books sail along as action adventure suspense, but then book four gets really dark, the ridiculous pseudo quotes at the beginning of chapters go away, and things get very violent and ridiculously far-fetched from there until a sort of epilogue book where the light humor and zany quotes return, and loose ends are tidily taken care of. I’m glad I read until the very end, but during the fourth book I almost quit due to my eyes rolling to the back of my head.
The sex scene that is long in coming is rather lame, and it’s almost like our hero is deflowering a girl when she’s not quite herself. The goofy chapter quotes have more passion than the protagonists. I also grew irritated with molars crushing mints, numerous suitcases with folded clothes magically appearing, some busyness with international flights, the protagonist rarely using her programming genius, and a serious lack of PTSD throughout.
What I loved about the books is the nearly error-free writing, the great descriptions of foreign places, the insertion of foreign dialog [includes profanity] (with English translations), and the mention of foreign foods. What a world-class adventure in that regard!
Short review. The Spotless Series is a fun action adventure romance that has several twist and turns. Island and OCD hitman March have wonderful chemistry. I'm looking forward to reading more book in the series.
2.5 stars Too wordy, could be at least 1/3 shorter, cliffhanger doesn't help. But book is funny in some places, especially in the beginning of each chapter with quote from fictional book. That's real parody of all romance books.
The funniest action packed series with endearing characters
Writing a book is difficult enough, writing a well written series is a whole different level. If you enjoy action, snark, vivid scenes and smart characters you will truly enjoy Ms. Monk's work.
Because of the Covid Virus this summer I took a staycation and read this series and what a trip it was!! From aliens to space in a ticket and lots of places around the globe there was lots of intrege, love and humor . You will love this getaway!!
Crazy fun w Hitman/Spy elements🕶️ Quirky hilarious FMC🥰 and lots of Adventure!🗺️ 0.5 spice🥲 🎧Audiobook Review🎧 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Narration - Single Narrator
Okay, so normally these days I only read spicy romance. If it’s a clean read but widely recommended, I’ll give it a shot but it’s rare. While this technically isn’t a clean romance it is not spicy either. But don’t let that stop you! I bought the audio boxset because it was a steal of 1 Audible credit for almost 51 hours!!! Yeah you read that right. As an avid audiobook reader, I couldn’t resist. And oh my gosh was it worth it. If this had smut it would be unstoppable. It’s still one of my favorite audiobooks because it is just so entertaining.
I could not put this down. After reading book one and the novella, I just had to know what happened in between. The books do not disappoint, and the twist at the beginning of Book 4 was great. Better than anything on TV! PS. My mum loved this too.
