Can a merman and an Atlantean, separated by centuries and prejudices, find love together? Merman Delwyn is an Oracle of the past. He loves nothing better than observing the comings and goings of those who lived centuries before he was born. His favorite time period to visit is when both Atlantean and mer inhabited the sunken city of Atlantis, and his guilty pleasure is watching lovers come together in passion. Secure in the knowledge that no one can see him when he's viewing the past, nothing can prepare Delwyn for the moment Fabian, an Atlantean living in the past, speaks to him. Fabian is a man with divided loyalties. The demi-god son of the Goddess of Sea Creatures has sworn to serve the Goddess of Prophecy as her Oracle of the present. His unique status gives him the power to see anything in the present, including the mysterious merman voyeur from the distant future. Despite the centuries that separate them, Delwyn and Fabian find they have a lot in common and quickly form a friendship that both hope one day will become something more. But before they can be together in the present, Delwyn and Fabian must unravel the mysteries of the past. Only time will tell if truth about the long-since vanished Atlanteans will bring them together or tear them apart, as the battle for the sunken city of Atlantis begins.
I live in England, in a quaint little village that time doesn't seem to have touched. No, wait a minute- that's the retirement biography. Right now I am in England in a medium sized town that no one has ever heard of, so I won't bore you with the details. Keeping me company are numerous sexy men. I just wish that they weren't all inside my head.
Please note, L.M. Brown is no longer active on Goodreads. Although she does occasionally check in to comment on another's blog the visits are few and far between.
3.9 HEARTS--Shifting Currents is the fourth book in the urban fantasy/paranormal series, Mermen & Magic. And though each book features a new couple, they're not standalone. You must read in order.
And finally we get to travel back in time when Atlantis was newly sunk and the Atlanteans and mer lived together in the sunken city. And in Dangerous Waves (#3), oracle of the past, Delwyn was told his love was already in Atlantis. He's searching very hard despite being contained to underwater city and being blind.
The silver fin virgin is the youngest of the oracles an the most romantic. It was apparent in previous books and finally fully blossomed in book #4. Delwyn is attracted to a ginger haired demigod/ oracle of the present, by the name of Fabian. Normally no one can notice Delwyn when he watches the events of the past. Somehow, Fabian does. And he can talk to Delwyn. Both are intrigued with the other. Other than conversation, Fabian and Delwyn couldn't physically touch. Their courtship was very unconventional but nothing will stand in the way for soul mates.
That's right fated mates. (Squee)
For the first half of the book, this was getting close to 5 Hearts for me. The mystery, the mates and their hardship of having many centuries separating them, finally getting to bottom of the Atlantean day. It was a lot of information to go through. And I was very happy.
This series is something like paranormal brain candy. It reminds of reading early Sherrilyn Kenyon from book #1 and it's still consistent to the latest. It's sort of light, sort of simple but the magic works.
Delwyn is endearing because he's this big heart searching for his happy ever after. Fabian is sexual Atlantean and how Delwyn firsts meet Fabian is hot. (Note: Fabian does have sex with another but Delwyn doesn't mind...it already happened. Plus, he has a voyeuristic streak).
We get a lot more action compared to the previous books.
The sea dragons finally get fully explained! We get to read the time when the Atlantean gods were in charge. When the story remains in present day, about 55-60%, the strong set up suffered a little from the slower pace. And the romance takes a backseat, so by the time I got to the end, I thought there was going to be more.
My overall rating is 3.9 Hearts. That's right, I'm rating this 3.9 Hearts. (It could have easily been my favorite of the series, the second half matched the first)
Once the start of the war happens, the action and the pace drags a little. The author makes sure to explain the entire scene, where I felt it could have been summarized a bit. With the romance removed from the driver's seat, the impact wasn't as strong as I think it could've been.
In L.M. Brown's Atlantis and merfolk world, the mer are sexual beings. They have mating seasons which coincide with the two solstices. The mer must have sex and release their triggers or they'll have physical pain the longer they go without. And the mer have different triggers to orgasm, like bottoming or penetration, or spanking.
Delwyn is a virgin in Shifting Currents and hasn't explored sexually. So we the readers never find out other than Delwyn isn't interested in being penetrated. I'm happy the author kept to his feelings and didn't write a gratuitous sex scene. Is there penetrative sex? Between the MC's: no. The sexual scenes are limited.
Due to a little thing about being born at different periods of time and setting up the war between the deities that hate the mer and the allies, the book spends more time on the mystery of that day. The impossibility of the two oracles being together in the same time helped pushed this plot. Though I still have questions about that day. I need a definitive reason why. We get to learn who cared for the Atlanteans and who were against them. But why exactly were they banished? What's up with Mariana's hatred? Where does it stem from?
The author went deeper this time in the wonderful mythological world created. And we learn more about Caspian. I CAN'T WAIT FOR HIS BOOK ALREADY! *cough* So I'm sorta satisfied but I want deeper, more explanation on actions made. #greedy.
Do I recommend this series? Well, I've read the entire series so far and have no plans to get off the Mermen & Magic train - so yes. I think this would work best for readers who don't mind lighter simpler paranormal themes.
Shifting Currents does end with a HEA (not without major sacrifices). I'm curious as to what's in store for the future because Atlantis and the current state felt unfinished.
This book has the ultimate drama and heartbreak out of all 4 books. Delwyn, the last oracle to find love, is still keeping himself alone till he can find his soul mate. He finds his soul mate to an Atlanean demigod in the past. Fabian as the son of a goddess and the servant of another is granted higher abilities and with that ability can see this handsome merman who stirs feelings in him that he never thought he would have. Fabian is mostly only for pleasure with bedmates but soon he can only imagine being with Delwyn. However, they know dreadful things will occur and now they have to figure out how Delwyn will find Fabian again in the present. L.M. Brown delivered a shocking twist into the present fate of Fabian, that I did not see coming but at the same time was also not a complete shock. However, there is still much left unknown that brought the demise of the gods and Atlanteans that we will find out in the next 2 books. The main present dilemma was fighting against a goddess who hates the mer people. A beloved character is killed, and Fabian is struck down that splits him from Delwyn. When the battle comes to a standstill, Delwyn must make a great sacrifice to find his happily ever after. I loved that the sexy scenes of Delwyn and Fabian is not the same as others but the intensity is still there. I look forward to finding out in book 5 what was Delwyn's mating trigger is.
Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is book FOUR in the Mermen and Magic series. I have not read the other three. And I think maybe I should have, because I felt I was missing something. Something about the Gods and Goddesses waking that wasn't recapped here. That's just my opinion, and I can only give my opinion, but I really think it would have helped ME.
Delwyn is a merman, and Oracle of the Past. He cannot see unless he is in a vision. what he enjoys the most is almost spying on lovers of old. Centuries ago, Fabian was Oracle of the Present. When Fabian catches Delwyn watching him and his lover, Delywn is shocked, but intrigued by the Altantean. They begin to spend more and more time together, til one day, they can be together for real.
Mer-people books come through so rarely, and I had high hopes for this one, but that missing SOMETHING from not reading the other three books left me feeling a bit let down.
Oh don't get me wrong, its still a really good book, and I did enjoy it, for the most part. I just . . . .ugh! I can't word it right, without making the book look bad, because it really ISN'T a bad book, not at all. I just needed that from the other books that isn't here, that's all!
It's told from both Delwyn and Fabian's point of view, in the third person. I spotted no spelling or editing errors. And I really DID like it, I just didn't love it.
Given time (she says, falling off her chair laughing!) I'll go back and read the other three books and come back to this one again. I just don't know when that's likely to happen.
I can't see that I've read anything else by Brown, but I would like to read more.
because of that SOMETHING missing from the other three books...
Delwyn once believed himself in love with his best friend—Prince Finn from the first Mermen and Magic book—became an unwitting oracle, and now contends himself with the past because he finds no joy in the present. He’s a romantic who just wants to be loved and believes his mate is already in the sunken city, but he still remains alone. The past is safe because he can observe the lives of those who’ve come before, playing voyeur on even their most intimate moments, because he knows he can’t be seen. Until, one day, someone does see him. A former oracle from centuries before can see him and they pair strike up an interesting relationship.
From the first look, there’s much for these two to overcome in order to be together, but this book was packed with so many pivotal series points–Atlantean’s waking, the answer to the sea dragons, Fabian’s mother trying to kill all the mer, and so on and so on and so on–that the relationship building took a serious back seat. While interesting and necessary, I needed more balance, more about why Delwyn & Fabian belonged together, and without that I didn’t fall in love with them as a couple.
SPOILER:
I’ll keep an eye on this series, because I enjoyed the other books, but I’m not certain I’ll continue.
L.M. Brown is back again, with her sexy and sweet mermen and the fight for control of Atlantis. Fair warning, this is not a stand-alone novel, and the books must be read in order to grasp the full scope of this complex and descriptive world. Just like with all the other books, once I started this novel, I couldn’t put it down until the end.
I love that we have returned to one of the first characters introduced in the series and get his story, as well as the story of a newly introduced character. Delwyn’s beginnings with Prince Finn bring the story full circle as the consequences of all the previous laws and mermen rules are changed to adapt the dwindling society.
It isn’t until Delwyn drifts far into the past that the legends are made clear and the fate of their fellow mermen comes to a head. Working with Fabian in the past, and on his own in the present, the two men learn about one another and find out that they are meant to be. The gods both aid and hinder the efforts of the two men, but they remain steadfast in their love and convictions.
As they fight for their way of life and liberty, sacrifices are made. Some to an awful degree. It broke my heart to lose a beloved character, but it is the reality of war, and I love that Brown pulled no punches. The emotional impact for all of the characters was devastating, and I hurt for them as well.
Though the ending was happy for our main couple of the novel, others’ lives were turned upside down, and I can’t wait to see how Brown draws us back into the briny deep to continue this fantastic tale.
