You probably won’t like my story. Heck, I’m not sure if I even like it myself. It’s 1154 A.D., and my sister Jules and I are trapped in medieval France. My name is Guillaume Lanval, but most people me Gill (and also Henry - long story!) and this is my pretty epic tale about how I braved the cliffs of Dover to become king, how I finally got the girl, and experienced some magical shit along the way. Did I mention the girl is kinda a sorceress? Despite what you hear, I'm starting to think this whole thing is my fault.
Rebekah Dodson is a prolific word weaver of romance, fantasy, and science fiction novels. Her works include the series Postcards from Paris, The Surrogate, The Curse of Lanval series, several stand alone novels, and her upcoming YA novel, Clock City. She has been writing her whole life, with her first published work of historical fiction with 4H Clubs of America at the age of 12, and poetry at the age of 16 with the National Poetry Society. With an extensive academic background including education, history, psychology and English, she currently works as a college professor by day and a writer by night.
This is the third volume in the Curse of Lanval story. Although I enjoy the drama, action and humor of the story, as well as the quirkiness and internal commentary of the MMC, Gil, I have to say that I find the narration a bit weak. Oftentimes, it was very mechanical, almost robotic, sounding. It lacked emotion and passion to me. Perhaps that is by design? I prefer a narration that adds life to the characters and story.
I received a free copy of the audiobook through StoryOrigin and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
This is my first book in the series, and I had no trouble picking up the trail and following the vivid characters that the author creates especially in Gill and Marie and their adventure into this strange land. Fighting the plague and the chaos that’s a constant part of their lives the cast of this magical fantasy battles on. Will they to live to fight another day or will this be the end of Gill and Marie? Pick up your copy to find out.
While I didn't enjoy this as much as the first two in the series, I still enjoyed seeing Gill mature and turn into even more of a dick. I can't wait to see where Rebekah takes these guys next!
Gill's journey to become king continues.... But travelling is not easy. Between rough conditions and a kidnapping attempt (where Gill gets a glimpse of his future self...and a little help), the whole crew is ready to reach their destination.
A few new relationships strengthen as Jules and Eleanor get closer, sharing the details of the time hop. Gill and Marie finally confess their love for each other. And Gill becomes attached to his page Piers.
All seems to be going well for awhile until the plague makes it's appearance, attacking Gill, then Marie and finally Piers. While Piers is on his deathbed, Marie saves him with her magic and chaos ensues.
Will Gill have to send Marie away? Or will he protect her? Read to find out.
Another wonderfully written installment is this series. I love how this book keeps giving the reader just enough details regarding the characters mysteries to keep you satisfied but wanting more. The cross over between time periods is refreshing. The characters draw out a variety of emotions ranging from love to hate to disgust. An overall great reading experience!
Magic....#3...WOW! As with the previous two, it was difficult to put down. The story is woven to keep you wanting more! Will Gill return to his own time?! What happens to Marie? Come on #4
This is the best book in the series yet. Get ready to grab some tissues. Magic is a wild ride that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, and none of your favorite characters are safe. I cannot wait for the next installment of this brilliant series! So many more questions I need to know the answers to!
