Andrew Russell, the 46th president of the United States, along with his wife and two young children have brought back a Kennedy-era feeling of Camelot to the White House. President Russell and his family are spending another vacation on the beautiful island of Nantucket.
After three years of planning, the Islamic Front has embedded terrorist cells on the island in preparation for the arrival of President Russell and his family.
With the resources of the US Navy at the ready -- the President, an ex-naval aviator, responds to the attack on his family with the focus, determination and aggressiveness that made him one of the best fighter pilots in the Fleet.
The people of Nantucket, descendants of hardy New England stock, along with the combined military and intelligence assets of the US Government are about to be challenged by the events unleashed on the tiny picturesque island.
The author desperately wants to be Tom Clancy, but lacks the necessary writing mechanics. Technical details are presented in a very unnatural manner which interrupts the flow of the story. The spoken dialogue of the characters is rigid and not believable. Very little opportunity exists for the reader to use his/her imagination because the author includes obvious details in such an obnoxious manner. For example (my own words to illustrate the point): “the bad guy walked into the building. The secret service agent noticed the bad guy looks like a middle eastern terrorist. The secret service agent told his coworker.” Poorly written, jerky, and just too painful to read. Did not finish.
Also, I’m a military pilot and the author’s portrayal of fighter pilots is embarrassing and eye-rolling. Not real.
This meticulously plotted story is fast off the mark and maintains that pace all the way to the end. The terrorist plot is wickedly devious with twists built into each stage of their mission. The technical aspects are informative without breaking the rhythm of the larger story. The characters are defined but are secondary to the action. In sum, this is is a classic action-thriller in the manner of the best action films of the 1970s. A definite winner.
Disclaimer: Nantucket is a place that is very dear to my heart, so I was concerned about how the island would be depicted in this book. I am glad to say the author captured the feel and spirit of Nantucket beautifully.
This was a fun weekend read, kind of like a mini Clancy with lots of technical military jargon, some of it way over my head but it's fun to learn too. The plot line was a bit week but some of the best stories are pretty improbable. I particularly liked the setting of Nantucket which I am very familiar with and obviously so is the author, I even have a date for the Dreamland theater (which is mentioned) on Tuesday night with some friends. The book held my attention all the way through and I'll probably pick up another of Duppers books soon.
It was interesting but very unrealistic and implausible. Real Islamic radicals would not kidnap the president’s family but kill the president and the family if they had a chance and the Chinese communist party would not become involved but would just sit by and watch. There is no way any president could start flying fighter jets without someone in the government or the nave tipping off the press, nor would he be able to just “slip away.”
This book offers an excellent plot that unfortunately lacks some of the details to bring together a truly great story. The tale is gripping and an easy read but the detail surrounding the motives of the character are lacking. I am hoping that the author writes another book that is a little clearer but carries on with a great plot like this one.
If u enjoy reading military manuals about naval ships, this is the book for u. Occasionally, weaved weakly in between military acronyms is a plot. Character development is relatively non-existent. Started skimming around 30% on my Kindle. At 60%, gave up on book entirely. Baffled that this book got 4 stars. Thank God I only paid $5 on Kindle.
Actually there were a lot of people around and millions of facts and details but so little character development that I had no connection to the people in the book. It's too bad because the premise would've made a decent thriller--but in the end I just didn't care.
What a really exciting read ! This good author sets the groundwork, builds the characters, and does a great job of narrating the action. I've never read an author who was so devious in weaving all the intricate plots and sub plots. I got a lot of really good enjoyment out of this story. I highly recommend it.
This story started with the President of the 🇺🇸 United States of America at his family home on Nantucket. Terrorist have been laying plans to attack the President and his family for over two years. Hard to say anymore without being a spoiler. But it was a very good story and I would definitely read more from the author!
I gave this book a 4star because it kept my interest from the beginning. The suspense throughout the book was constant with no idea how it was going to be played out. There were different story lines to the plot as well. How the president was portrait was all inspiring. This was an excellent read.
A good short read with accurate descriptions of military interfaces. After reading several non-fiction books on currrent and past Washington politics, I found this to be a relaxing read especially for one with military background.
Really liked the description of life in Nantucket and the portrayal ofc the people actually was realistic. New Englanders are a tough breed and do not like any kind of attack on their land/island.
As a submarine enthusiast I enjoyed the story with the new technology diesel subs being involved. I am surprised that a more exhaustive effort on oxygen creation systems to extend underwater time on the diesel boats.
highly implausible but still gripping start to finish.
A very Tom Clancy-ish “sea yarn” both because the plot is implausibly structured, but the tension is real, as is the careful attention to the details of naval aviation. Bravo Zulu.
From the very beginning this book and story get me on the edge of my seat. With it's many twists and turns through out the story it is definitely a book I highly recommend!
The quick pace and the obvious research into this story was remarkable . I enjoyed the realism that maintained the dire feeling throughout and the unpredictably of plot twists and the justifiable ending thank you for a great read
Amazing read!! The action started fast and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I read this in one sitting. This is a definitely must read!!
Multiple locations and multiple characters combine with lots of action - not all of it expected - to create a very readable story that you won't want to put down.
Liked the plot ! Intricate but not convoluted ! Good action ! Interesting twists ! A rewarding, fast moving reading ! Have the next one in the Kindle que ! Hoping for more !
Extremely enjoyable, although it went a bit beyond believable. Good characterization, intrigue and intensity with a interesting storyline up until the end.
This story grabbed me and pulled me right in. Loved how they tied it into current affairs. The book was well written very exciting and had an excellent ending
This engaging thriller depicted imaginable and realistic events. Dangerous situations that truly represent present day issues and fears. The tension and excitement throughout the book kept me wanting to turn to the next page. I finished the book in one sitting.
Attack on Nantucket is a military thriller set predominantly in the island community of Nantucket, and involves a well-coordinated attack on the family of the President of the United States. The attack is carried out by some extremely well-funded and organised generic brand terrorists, who seem to be sponsored by the Apple company.
There are a lot of players in this novel, and a lot of different moving parts between the various groups of terrorists, as well as the American military forces who are working to uncover the plots, and recover the first family. For the most part the big players behind the scenes are more fleshed out than those on the ground, which makes it slightly difficult to be interested in the generic bad guys.
I think that the author has done a good job of plotting the novel, and the action scenes are well-written, although the novel does descend into rather unbelievable silliness by the end. Which I won't spoil, but I felt it let down an otherwise-well crafted military thriller. Not every POTUS has to be a Jack Ryan, and that should be okay.
The action in this book takes place in the air, on the ground, as well as on and under the ocean, and the author does a fair job of authentically capturing the feel of these different environments. I felt like it was for the most part, an enjoyable thriller that is above average, given some others I have read, but - for the reason stated above regarding the ending - falls slightly short of the top tier of military thrillers out there, and there is a lot of competition.
Attack on Nantucket is a pretty good, contemporary thriller that would probably suit younger readers, who may not be as hung up on accuracy and are willing to indulge a little silliness now and then. I did enjoy the book, although I wish it had ended sooner.
I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
