Tom Hiddleston: The Biography

Rate this book
Still only in his thirties, Tom Hiddleston has brought both the big and small screen to life for audiences around the world. First emerging on British television and stage—winning the Lawrence Olivier Award in 2008 and appearing in Othello opposite Ewan Macgregor—Hiddleston's breakthrough came when he was cast as Loki in the 2011 Thor film, and again in The Avengers (2012) and the 2013 blockbuster The Dark World , a role that cemented him as a star. He has since worked with legends of stage and screen, including Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg, and recently won a Golden Globe for his role in the BBC adaptation of John Le Carre's The Night Manager . This book traces Tom Hiddleston's career to date, from his early introduction to theatre as a child, through to his role at the heart of the blockbuster Marvel Universe and leaves few readers doubting the incredible talent of this modern star.

First of all it was a lot better than I expected considering he had no part in the making of this book, there are a lot of quotations from him though so that’s good enough for me. It was a rather fascinating read. Normally when it comes to actors/ actresses the only thing I’m interested in is their movies. I actually don’t care to know about their personally lives because I find it invasive (it’s not a problem if you do FANGIRL/BOY AWAY!! As long as yoi are all happy.

I really do respect him as an actor and hat he does from charity, he really does care about his work and all of his co stars have nothing but good things to say about it, I’m not surprised because he seems like a really nice, humble down to earth human and I wish him all the best in his future career

Now there’s a few things I would like to touch up on.

“It’s more to do with the fact he’s a commitment-phobe who gets bored very easily “
Maybe that’s not the case at all, maybe he’s looking for the right person?. It could be that he’s still young and isn’t wanting a family right now. Nobody knows but Tom.

It’s rather hard to find the other quotes since I haven’t marked the page numbers down so I will briefly discuss it the best I can. When Tom dated Taylor all the world made it their business and because they made it their business, ‘fans’ turned on him saying that it’s acting career has gone down and that nobody cares about him anymore blah, blah, blah. ENOUGH! Nobody can control who people date. If you don’t like the person your favorite celebrity is dating then maybe you aren’t a true fan, you should want them to be happy.

I’ve noticed in the past it’s the fans that slag an actor off because they do something they don’t like and then when they do something that they do like, they practically kiss their arse. It’s not right. I thoroughly don’t agree or like that people invade other people’s personal life. If they make a book then fine I will read it but my main focuses is their movies. It also take the piss when people give their partners death threats and hate mail. We are all human and we all deserve privacy.

I love Tom Hiddleston, but this book is worthless. It's definitely not an authorized biography but all this really is, is a bunch of his interviews and quotes strung together in a book, where the author fills in what's missing. I have zero confidence that the author even knows what she's writing about. I had trouble finishing this it was so awful. (It took me a year to decide to finally finish it.) If your a big Tom Hiddleston fan, then you've already seen the interviews she quotes, so don't waste your money!

This book can't even decide who the author is! The cover, title page, and copyright are under Naima Corsani. The blurb on the back cover quotes "In this book, Sarah Marshall traces Tom Hiddleston's career....." So who wrote? Is one a pen name? Confusing! Maybe nobody wants to own up to writing this piece of trash. lol Btw, just checked, the photo on here and on Amazon are the same and have Sarah Marshall as the author in the upper left hand corner. My copy has the exact same cover, except that it lists Naima Corsani in that same corner as the author. Very odd.

My reading progress notes:

September 19, 2017 – page 7

2.43% "I had to read the first two pages three times. I am only 7 pages in, but I can't stand how the writer is writing this. I love the subject matter (or I wouldn't be reading it), but the writing feels ackward. I've read a lot of biographies and this just reads.... oddly impersonal. She writes like a disinterested journalist and liberally adds quotes from Tom's interviews, from his point of view. It's an odd mix."

September 24, 2017 – page 129

44.79% "OMG, not only does this author presume to think she knows what Tom's parents are thinking, now she can't even get the name of a movie correct. The Avengers was never released as Avengers Assemble. I even looked it up, as she's calling that the UK release, to see if it was ever released under any other title, and can't find any. I can't recommend this book to anyone with such obvious errors in it."

Being a fan, of course I wanted to read this book. However, as it was an 'unauthorized' biography, I would warn other fans of setting high expectations. There are not exclusive interviews or information in this book, as it has all been gleaned from other sources. If you have followed Tom's career for a while and have read almost all news reports or interviews, you will not find anything new here.
Having said that, i enjoyed it well enough. It is written in an east to read style. I was a bit disappointed that his work on the film 'Only Lovers Left Alive' barely copped a mention, and his early work of TV sitcom 'Suburban Shootout' was left out completely.
I look forward to the day an autobiography is written (Tom certainly is eloquent enough to write his own) or at the very least, an authorized biography, is published. But given his relatively young age, I imagine we might be waiting a while for that.

NOTE: The copy I read has a different author on the cover, which is rather curious, as it has the exact same image and publishing details, including ISBN. The author on my copy is 'Corsani, Naima'.

Although it may be premature to write a biography of an actor of his age, this overview of Tom Hiddleston's career thus far is an engaging one. Written without his cooperation, it's mostly taken from articles, interviews and on-line sources but is fairly well-researched and detailed. It covers his major roles like Loki in the Thor and Avengers films, his adventurer in Kong Of Skull Island and his character in Le Carre's The Night Manager but also his smaller parts and lesser known ones like his sidekick to Kenneth Brannagh in the Wallander series, his army captain in War Horse and his television Shakespeare trilogy The Hollow Crown. It does fill in a lot of background about an actor who maybe doesn't get the acclaim he deserves in North America. - BH.

Tom Hiddleston is quite eloquent and a gifted public speaker in my opinion, so I enjoy listening to his interviews. However, as much as I enjoyed the many quotes from his various appearances, the book felt a bit like the Wikipedia of biographies. It offers a decent list of the turning points and accomplishments in his life, there is simply more to it.

A compilation of peitnt interviews. Nothing new or insightful.

This book is essentially a waste of money. Nothing new. String of print interviews. There is one glaring mistake where the author states Tom has a cat, Bentley. Not his cat. Tom does own a do now (not mentioned), named Bobby. Any of Tom's fan could have told you the same story, and more believeably.

I loved it. I have loved Tom's work since I saw him play in Thor and still enjoy pretty much every movie and series. I think the book was great but sometimes it was a bit repetitive .
