This time it’s personnel. Jason, Kurt, and the rest of the Multiplex 10 face their greatest challenges yet in the third installment of the hit comic strip Multiplex , a not-quite-slice-of-life look at your local movie theater and the jerkass kids who work there. This collection includes strips #217–338 from the archives, including the battle royale against the Multiplex's archnemeses at Flickhead Video. Also included are 40 pages of new comics and an 8 page comic titled "The Story So Far," which will help new readers get up to speed.
Gordon McAlpin lives in Somerville, Massachusetts, with his fiancée Karyn and their cats Dipper and Mabel. Gordon has written movie reviews, co-hosted a movie podcast, and edited a movie news blog. Multiplex concluded in April 2017, but he continues to work on the print collections, and he is currently producing an animated adaptation of the comic called Multiplex 10.
From 2004–2006, Gordon created Stripped Books, a series of non-fiction strips covering book- and comics-related events in comics form. Multiplex began in July, 2005, and is Gordon’s first on-going comic strip.
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these strips until I read them again for this collection. I am continually impressed by how much detail Gordon McAlpin puts into these comics while maintaining various storylines and multiple types of humor. Oh sure. There are the standard punchlines, but McAlpin is not satisfied with low hanging fruit. He wants the payoffs that come from characterization, from the slow build, from visual reactions and contrasting setting with story.
In short, Multiplex is more than just a webcomic taking potshots at movies and moviegoers (although it does those things well.) It is witty, wise, and well written. I love how repeated readings can bring about whole new understanding of the people in the strip ... if you are willing to dig. But even if not, the casual observer can enjoy the antics of Kurt, Jason, Becky, Melissa, Franklin, and the rest.
