Everyday Genesis: Inviting God to Re-Create You

Rate this book
Insightful speaker and writer Nika Maples illustrates how Creation week reveals God's pattern to bring us new life--spirit, soul, and body.
Are you tired of trying--and failing--to break bad habits? And what about those sins that have been weighing you down for years? Do you often feel stuck ... being you? Starting over is not as difficult as we think. The Genesis account of Creation reveals a divine sequence, showing us the secrets to new life. When we invite the Creator to make us new, we release any blame and regret we carry and embrace His foundation for re-creation, a new life. There we find exactly Who was presiding over the genesis of the earth. He can re-create us with a similar first bringing us revelation, then giving us benefits such as purpose and guidance, and finally teaching us to build a legacy. Through the divine sequence of Creation, we can learn simple spiritual disciplines for abiding in Christ and staying in step with the Spirit. If we want to begin again, we start at the Beginning.

Nika Maples, a native Texan, never thought she would become a teacher. By her sophomore year in college everything changed …

In 1994, a lupus-induced stroke left Nika quadriplegic. She could not speak, swallow, or blink. In intensive care, she listened as physicians warned her family that she had as little as 48 hours to live. If she lived at all, they said, she could be expected to remain unresponsive. She had lost all functionality and had no hope of recovery, so doctors suggested an assisted living facility as the only option for Nika’s future. When she could do nothing else, she prayed. Her faith sustained her, and she walked back onto her college campus on her own two feet. The lessons she learned from quadriplegia will always be a part of her heart.

A stark reality became clearer to her by the day: Life is brief and brilliant. Whatever we choose to do with our handful of moments on earth, it is critical that we make those moments significant by serving others. She could think of no better way to serve than to educate and encourage young people.

After she had taught in a public high school only four years, the Texas Education Agency honored Nika by naming her 2007 Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year. Currently, she shares her message of hope and endurance with education, business, and church groups, while continuing to teach language arts and social studies to 5th grade students in Keller, Texas. Audiences respond to her humorous and heartfelt stories with warmth and enthusiasm. Almost everyone walks away with a renewed sense of purpose.

Nika holds a BS in mass communications from Texas Wesleyan University and an MA in English education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her teaching philosophy is simple. Teachers, as academic physicians, must not remove “educational life support” from any student, no matter how seemingly hopeless the situation.

It is never too late to learn and it is never too late to teach.

The person who wrote a book should like the book they wrote, right? Everyday Genesis is packed with so much to chew on. If you have ever wondered about your purpose, read it. If you have ever felt stuck, read it. If you have ever wondered if you have a spiritual gift, read it. If you have ever desired to grow in the spiritual disciplines, read it.

This book put the book of Genesis into a practical form. I really enjoyed reading and putting it into practice. Highly recommend it

It was a good book, but I really struggled with the fact that she equated the "soul" with the "flesh" (putting "spirit" in place of "soul" and replacing "flesh" with "soul" in other places). This was likely because my faith doesn't agree with that.

She had a lot of other good points and some very good personal stories that helped explain the concepts she was conveying. Read other reviews before deciding to read this book or not. Her views on faith may align with yours and it might be a great book for you to read. I really appreciated her reminder about reading the Bible every day. It's something I've fallen away from and her comparison of daily reading to daily manna resonated with me.

I’m so glad I get to finish 2017 on this note. Nika Maples has beautifully demonstrated how to grow closer to God in your Bible study and prayer time. I’m so inspired to walk more closely with God. Her stories flow seamlessly into Scripture, and it is evident that her words are straight from the Holy Spirit. I can not recommend this enough!

This was a great book that challenged me to think about my spiritual gifts, the way that I use them, and the fruit that they produce. It has changed the way I view my relationship with God and others, and it has changed the way that I pray. The author uses stories and illustrations in a way that I can relate to. My copy of Everyday Genesis has been underlined, written in, and is dog eared as I pour over the words and let them sink in and make changes to my heart. I highly recommend this book!

Less is more. And the more we let go of the things that we cling to, the less we have to turn to habitual or addictive habits to find a sense of being. One does not find it there, anyway. This book reminds me that one cannot live without God.

I have worked on countless devotionals and Christian books over the last 14+ years, and this one is without question one of my favorites. This listing says it is an audiobook, but I worked on the hard copy, which I suspect will be published soon. I loved every second of reading this book and plan to buy a physical copy (most of my editing work is now done digitally). I rarely say that about books I've worked on. I could not justify buying a hard copy of everything I've edited; my shelves are already near capacity with devos I've used in Sunday school and women's group studies. This one is a great devotional for an uplifting jolt. It would be a wonderful gift for a special person in your life.

A really great read. I enjoyed the tips to make us more Christ like but what I loved most was her spin on the days of creation. How descriptive and perceptive these were. I would gladly read another book by this author.
I was given this book by Netgalley and the publisher. This is my voluntary and impartial review.

This was a really nice read. Inspiring, too. I liked how she compared the first part of Genesis with the Christian life. She had a lot of thoughts that were interesting that I never thought about. Her personal stories were enjoyable as well. Her writing style was also really smooth and relatable. This is a book I’m definitely gonna revisit.

I just didn’t come away fully convinced... I think the premise of the book is a good one, but some of the teaching on soul and spirit seemed off to me.
