takeaway - Bosch paintings use iconography not as clear religious parable (and don't have a ~historical lens the way most medieval religious painting does) but uses religious imagery/codes allegorically - "Bosch's concern was to sound the alarm" to what he saw to be a descent into sin and depravity..his present as part of history: 'world rushing toward doom.' Emmalea Russo on depiction of God in Garden of Earthly Delights: "he’s part of the environment, both event and entity. His corner of damnation appears as both chaotic and coolly logical, with its own set of rules and codes" The codes to tell the allegory are muddy and stray from the established methods of medieval religious painting under the catholic church, and maybe thats why they are read as heretical. Always love the map-like, not quite bird's eye arena-view of a landscape (a view of Earth that includes Heaven and Hell)

Superb. This is the first thing I've read that delves completely into the Bosch paintings. Felt like nothing was left out. Bosch painted allegories? Who knew? (Okay, experts on the topic knew; I didn't.)
