I won this book in one of the Goodreads giveaways. Since I mostly read YA, I let it sit on my shelf for a few months while I burned through my summer reading list.
I found Twig to be surprisingly enjoyable and a book I eagerly picked up each day. From the beginning, it felt like I was reading a memoir. Told in first person, and following the story of Mattie, an 18 year old girl who enters into her third marriage, I felt invested in her life and needed to follow her story.
All of the characters felt like 'real' people. They are all flawed in a very human way. There are no pure villains or heroes, just people who do the best they can with what they have.
Set in the 1940s and 50s, the sexism of the time is appalling, but very real for the way Americans viewed women.
I would've given this 5 stars except for a few small scenes that felt like red-herrings and went nowhere. I think that is why this felt so much like a memoir, because in real life, not everything adds up. (I also found a few typos and one messed up chapter heading that gave the wrong year.)
A worthy read with a heroine I wanted to cheer for.
Phillips has crafted a very fine novel in Twig. The story jumps right in and grabs the reader's attention from the beginning. Her writing style is very easy to read and maintains a good pace. The book is a coming of age tale and women's fiction novel told as historical fiction, which keeps things interesting. Phillips does a good job balancing her themes, allowing focus to shift to different points of interest for many readers. This book would appeal to fans of women's fiction, historical fiction and those interested in novels about family or conception problems.
I received a copy of this book as a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the author/publisher for participating in the giveaway.
Wow, what a great read, I really felt as if Maddie was my neighbor, my friend, my sister. Her story really impacted me. In this era of history, so few women dared to "think" for themselves. This courageous ladies life, made me laugh, then pissed me off, and brought me to tears. A very refreshing read. Thank you for bringing this story to life, with such a richness. Will definitely recommend this book to my friends and family.
After a difficult childhood, Mattie searches for love in all the wrong places. Her first two marriages failed, and believing that the third time could be different, she married Glen, who was much older. He professes his love for her, but is it real? Can she have the family she always wanted, and at what cost? Excellently written. Look forward to reading more from this author.
When I went to Amazon to read about this book I saw it had one review. It wasn't really a review! Someone made an incorrect assumption about this book after reading that Mattie was 18 and on her 3rd husband. I'm here to say the non review ticked me off so I ordered the book. I have just finished. It took a while to really get to know Mattie but it happened. I like how her sense of self finally developed and she became strong enough to believe she knows what is best for her life and acts on it. Little by little she discovers who she is. Her family is dysfunctional to the extreme but you come to understand them. I really liked this book and was sad when it ended.
At first I felt unsure about Mattie getting married so young to a much older man she barely knew all because she wanted a baby. As I progressed through the book I grew to love Mattie's character and admire her strength and determination to do the things in life she wanted to do and not let anyone stand in her way.
