Those who think they know me would tell you I’m a caring mother, a loyal friend, and a dutiful wife. They’d say the golden path which led me here is the road every little girl dreams of taking.
However, the guise of my happy existence has come to be just that—an illusion. A mask of contentment intended for the world to believe.
Not many years into my marriage, I became an abandoned housewife to an adulterous husband. A proud, but sad, mother of two beautiful daughters.
My days were spent somewhere lost between empty and alone.
Then he came back. Mason Cole offered a second chance to share the life we were supposed to have together. He gave me a glimpse of myself. The woman I'd forgotten long ago.
My road to hell was paved with good intentions. But sometimes good intentions get lost amidst a heart's desire.
Her marriage to her husband is loveless, her husband cheats on her with her ex best friend and she's hung up on her ex who dumped her ass faster than a hot potato. She has to see her ex dating OWs and she knows her husband is a cheater while she stays frozen. And pretty sure she cheated on her cheating husband, something the hero said about ending things between them 4 years ago but she's been married for 15 years? At least my calculations are giving me that number because her oldest daughter is 15 and she only married because she was pregnant. Now don't take my word for it since I Dnfed it.
There's a very explicit sex scene with the woman he's dating while imagining that he's fucking the heroine. He said the ow is nothing but a vessel for him to purge his hostility.

Keep Happy? Keep myself away. How unpleasant. Not my type of book AT ALL. I don't care if it happens in real life. I read for the escape and illusion. Period
I have yet to meet an AC Bextor book I didn’t like, but Keep Happy just moved that bar even higher.
I’m normally not a fan of time jumps, but by God it works for Keep Happy. In fact, I think it’s the only way possible to tell Mason and Katie’s story.
AC brilliantly elicits a level of understanding for and insight in these conflicted characters. She forces us to question our own moral compass and does it in a way that only leaves one possible outcome. Layer after layer is peeled away, exposing thoughts, emotions, and motivations that leave both these characters feeling real and relatable.
The writing is impeccable—the subtle touches of sarcastic humor perfectly timed—and the human insight impressive.
I have one special mention: Averie. I love that kid!
Katherine Morris meets Mason Cole when she is 12 years old. They become friends. Mason is a few years older than Katherine yet the bond between them is instant. They enjoy each other’s company. As Katherine gets older she knows she has these deep feelings for Mason that are more than just friendship feelings. And Mason also comes to realize that he finds something more in Katherine, or Katie Mae as he has taken to call her, that go past the friend zone. They do become involved but Mason has to leave town to get away from his abusive father and help his mom and sister out which means Katie Mae gets left behind. Life moves on for Katherine but really it is not much of a life that she wanted, compared to the rich love she had with Mason. She ends up married and has two children with her husband; her marriage is just an empty shell of a marriage especially since her husband cheats on her. For her children’s sake, she stays married. She loves her daughters more than anything and Katherine would do anything to make them happy. Suddenly Mason comes back to town and the staid and quiet life that Katherine built for herself begins to come apart. Why ? Because her first love, her real love is back and the possibility of getting that second chance is right there for Katherine but only if she reaches out and takes it. Will she ? AC Bextor has written a 2nd chance at love story about a couple that has obstacles; she is married to someone else, there are children involved, and there is cheating on both sides. Yet I will tell you this gripped me from the beginning and I am not someone who digs cheating stories. I felt so much for Katie Mae and Mason. Theirs was a love that was denied and they have this 2nd chance. I really didn’t like Katherine’s husband at all. I adored Katherine’s children, especially Averie. And Mason-wow, he was in such a dark place until Katherine came into his life. This is so true and it runs in the book at various points. I rooted for them to find finally their HEA. But do they get it..only way to find out is to read this beautifully emotional read.
My Rating: 4.5 stars ***** “I received an advanced copy of this book from the author at no cost to me."
Mason Allen Cole stole my heart as soon as he appeared on the page of my ereader. Like Katie Dyer, the heroine of AC Bextor’s story, I was intrigued with the apparent bad boy with a caring heart. I won’t lie; this story blew me away. Ms. Bextor’s style breaks through the typical lost love trope. The reader glimpses the couple from their first meeting, through their separation, and eventually to their HEA. It’s a long, tortured road for both of them but the journey leads to a more than satisfying HEA. Teenage girls often crush on boys a bit older. Little does Katie know, the young man she drooled over while building their pool one summer would repeatedly impact her future. Throughout her teen years, she has experiences with Mason that cement their attraction to each other. However, while Mason has the same pull, he won’t cross the line until Katie is of age. As a couple they are each other’s reason to breathe, however the situation that Mason lives in is less than ideal and eventually he is forced to leave his soul mate. Errors in judgment are made, responsibilities arise, and doing the right thing becomes an obligation to live a life that revolves around someone besides the love they both need. There is so much emotion and passion in this story; it’s hard to not reveal spoilers. Everyone knows a woman like Katie Dyer. A woman who is held in stasis by her loyalty and circumstances she feels she has no control over. Existing, but not really living the life she was meant for. Living a life of obligation rather the life she imagined. Katie is a strong woman; there is no doubt about that. She loves fiercely and her children are her crowning achievements. She’s beautiful, smart, and loving, even in betrayal. While her daughters are polar opposites they are great characters. Amelia is quiet and introspective, while Averie is outrageous and funny as hell. Almost a reboot of her mother in her teen years. Mason is the man every woman dreams of loving: handsome, strong, protective, and deep in his soul loyal to his heart. A man of few words, when he speaks you had better listen because it’s important. The circumstances he grew up in were less than ideal, and he endured them longer than he might have if not for his love of Katie Dyer. This book is full of heart. It has it all: love, loss, passion, angst, suspense, and humor. I look forward to more books like this from AC Bextor
EEEEEPPPP!!! I am soooooooooo excited to have found a new author that I can honestly say has landed on my MUST READ list!!! A.C. Bextor has done that with this book!!!
I felt 𝑨𝑩𝑺𝑶𝑳𝑼𝑻𝑬𝑳𝒀 𝑪𝑶𝑵𝑺𝑼𝑴𝑬𝑫 by this story from the Prologue to the last word in the final chapter! Mason Allen Cole is one of THE most heart-palpitating Alpha heroes I have loved in a long time! He is 𝘿𝙊𝙒𝙉𝙍𝙄𝙂𝙃𝙏 𝘿𝙀𝙀𝙀𝙀𝙀𝙇𝙄𝘾𝙄𝙊𝙐𝙎!!!! Mason is complicated and complex, he's tender and loving yet when it comes to his Katie Mae, he will stop at NOTHING to make sure SHE is "happy"!
This second chance love story has a few surprising twists and turns and is FULL of all the FEELS...from laugh-out-loud banter to heart-wrenchingly raw emotions to sweet declarations of love to panty-melting, 𝙎𝙄𝙕𝙕𝙇𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙃𝘼𝙒𝙏 smexy scenes!!! I was totally and completely 𝑬𝑵𝑹𝑨𝑷𝑻𝑼𝑹𝑬𝑫 with A.C.'s writing style and I ADORED how this story was ingeniously told using flashbacks....I never once felt lost or confused! In fact, I think it added another twist to this 𝗔𝗪𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗭𝗜𝗡𝗚 journey!!! I LOVED everything about this book and I'm diving right in to my NEXT A.C. Bextor immediately...I simply can't get enough!!!
There’s nothing this author can’t write, I’ve fallen in love with her bikers, mafia and now a book that at times had me a blubbering mess. My heart broke for these two. At times I was yelling at Katie while I was falling so in love with Mason that I couldn’t see straight.
Their love spans years, he’s her first and only love and he’s always considered her, his. This is an amazing emotional read and these characters will have you so engrossed in their lives and totally falling in love with them. You’ll definitely want to read this.
Keep Happy is the first book in the Silvervale Second Chance Romance series by A.C Bextor. Once again Ms. Bextor delivers a superb story, that tugs at your heart strings and shows what a versatile and talented author she really is. Katherine Morris met Mason Cole when she was 12 years old. They developed a firm friendship, the more time they spent together, the more their feelings developed. But circumstances forced Mason to move away, leaving them both devastated. She does her best to live her life, but its never quite the same without him. She marries and has two adorable daughters. Her marriage isn’t what she had hoped. She is unhappy, and her cheating husband only adds to her woes. Then Mason returns to town and old feelings come rushing back. What does fate have in store for them? What about her marriage? Will they get their second chance at happiness, together? This is a great story, with wonderful, complex and conflicted characters. My heart ached for what they had been through and I was rooting for them the whole way through. The story has a great pace and a smooth flow. Its told from a duel POV, and the story moves seamlessly from past to present perspectives, to give us a better understanding of events. I will definitely be reading more of Ms. Bextor’s fantastic books. I wonder what she has got for us next?
Sometimes we make the wrong decisions for the right reasons. Regardless of the reasons, we have to live with our decisions....
This book captivated me. I loved the way it unfolded. I really don't want to say much because you need to experience it along with our characters. I will say this, there is a secondary character in this story that steals the show every time she shows up on the page...Averie! Honestly, I hope to someday read her story.
This is a well written story given to us in past and present chapters. To understand the present, we need to revisit the past. One part I really really liked - the explanation about the cards. So manly, but true!
Katie loves Mason but she married Thomas because she got pregnant and she wanted a stable life. Thomas is not in love with Katie but he marries her due to the pregnancy. Soon after their second daughter is born, he cheats on her with one of her best friends and has a long-time affair. She stays with him for their daughters but she cheats on him with Mason. Four years ago, Katie and Mason decided to stop their affair to give a chance to Katie's marriage. However, Thomas continued to cheat. He neglects her and travels a lot for his job so he is not even present for his daughters who are now 15 and 13 years old. At some point, Katie meets Mason with the woman he has been seeing for 6 months and she is sad and not at all the woman he used to know. After they meet, there is a very detailed scene where Mason has sex with his date trying to imagine she is Katie and I hate it. They have been living in the same city all this time and they haven't seen each other for 4 years but suddenly, they see each other every other day... A few days after that meeting, Katie's second daughter disappears and since Mason is a cop, she goes to see him. She says she cannot find Avery and he doesn't even know who that is !? Strange since he has known her for 20 years and they had an affair even when she already had her daughters.
I didn't like Katie because how could she stay for so long with her cheating husband even just for her children?
There is even another scene where Katie knows she wants Mason, she knows her husband cheats and she lets him f*** her as he is drunk. I hate this scene and I hate that she let Thomas have his way.
Apparently, everybody knows that Thomas is a cheater at her first daughter's school as they make fun of her for it so she is angry with her parents but doesn't explain why.
Avery is sweet but she behaves more like a 7 year-old than a 13 year-old and I know because I have one at home.
All in all, not really realistic and I don't like Katie.

Keep Happy by AC Bextor a fantastic five-star read. This author is such a great writer, I found her through another author I have great faith in and I’m so glad I took the chance, this was such an amazing read. When some people write a time jump I get easily confused but this author did it brilliantly, I loved that aspect of the story. Mason and his story will break you, but it will also make you, he is so much more that the typical bad boy he seems, and so much more than you typically get. This story will blow you away, its so much more than we normally get in this genre. Thank you AC Bextor for the talent you have.
Oh my word what a beautiful emotional story. Mason and Katie will take you on journey through so many years. The story line will move back and forth between the past and the present but it is an easy transition. They are each conflicted in their own right but find comfort in the friendship they develop. It turns to young love but is then derailed . To settle in life is heartbreaking but to hopefully know that some day you can capture what is lost is priceless . I loved watching them grow, even while apart the love could not be denied ! Keep Happy for yourself and those you love ! Loved It ! ~~Michele McMullen ~~
Katherine Morris meets Mason Cole when she is 12 yrs old. They become friends. Mason is a few yrs older than Katherine but she has such a sassy personality Mason takes a liking to her. They enjoy each others company. But as Katherine gets older she knows she has feelings for Mason that are more than feelings for a friend. And Mason also realizes that he finds something more in Katherine, or as he has taken to calling her Katie Mae, that go past the friend zone. They do become involved but Mason has to leave town to get away from his abusive father and help his mother and sister. Katie Mae is left behind. Life continues for Katherine but its not much of a life. Although she now has two daughters that she adores. Her marriage to Thomas is nothing more than an illusion of a happy marriage. For the sake of their daughters happiness they stay together. That doesn't mean that Thomas' affairs don't hurt Katherine. At least they used to. Now Mason Cole comes back to town and the life Katherine has built for herself begins to unravel. The possibility of a second chance is right there in front of Katherine. Will she take that chance? AC Bextor has written a love story that takes us back and forth in the life of Katherine and Mason. We get to know their past and present and then hope for their future. AC Bextor builds the story and characters so well that I kind of felt sorry for Thomas, even though he was an absent father and cheating husband. He too seemed lost. I fell in love with Averie, Katherine's youngest daughter. She was so much like her mother at that age. That young lady will be a force to be reckoned with. And then we have Mason. He came from such a dark place when he was younger that when he got to meet Katie, he found his light. And having her with him is when he found his home. But even when he finds his home with her, he regretfully walks away from her, thinking she would find someone better. How can you not fall in love with him? As the book progresses you will find yourself wanting for Mason and Katie to finally get the happiness they both deserve. AC Bextor once again does not disappoint her readers.
First off, this was my first taste of and AC Bextor book. Given the topic is not something I usually would pick out for myself to read (which I will get into about later) I really loved these characters and felt for them, also absolutely LOVED the way she laid out the actual chapters of the book. You do flip between past (as the characters have history) and present quite frequently in the first half of the book, but it is not hard to follow and helps set up the entire book and develop emotions for the characters.
With that being said you are taken on an emotional rollercoaster that makes you feel for all the characters...there were times I wanted to shake them and hug them at the same time. Before the spoilers, I will leave a few quotes that I happened to email AC as I was going through my ARC that made the author lol.
"I’m at chapter 14, and I just wanted to let your evil author side know she’s really good at torturing the readers and pulling at our already vulnerable heartstrings."
"Chapter 29 update you just ripped my heart out and threw it in a blender....yet for some reason I love you for it #alittlemasochist."
FYI SPOILERS/TRIGGER DISCUSSION BEGINS BELOW.
Trigger warnings: cheating (adultery), crimes against girl code, and child abuse, including sexual abuse.
Child Abuse/Sexual Abuse is part of this book and does play into the play a few times throughout the book. As one of the characters is a police officer so as you can imagine he does half to deal with some horrific situations; I will say that there are not scenes that go into explicit detail about what happens to the victims but more of a summary of the crime and extent of their injuries.
Cheating (adultery)/Crimes Against Girl Code: Ok, so I don't usually read love triangle book or books that have adultery as a plot point just a personal preference thing/is a sore spot for me; which is the ONLY reason I gave this book a 4-star rating. I actually didn't realize that one of the characters was still married until quite a few chapters into the book. I don't feel that any situation ever justifies cheating but what the characters have been through you do root for their to be a solution where everyone is happy or at least content. Also, I feel that AC did a fantastic job of handling what some people call a “taboo” subject; she handled it with such sensitivity, honesty, and logically. Regarding "Crimes Against Girl Code" if that is a reference you aren't familiar with it should make sense once you read the book.

There isn’t anything that A.C. Bextor has written that I haven’t liked. She hooked me with her MC series, and I have read all of her books since then. She has a way of drawing you into the story and keeping you captivated by the characters, and this book is another example.
Katherine met Mason when she was twelve years old. He worked for her dad and she became intrigued by him. They soon became good friends and he was her first crush. He was a few years older and knew not to cross the line as friends. As time passed, the closer their bond became and he became her first love.
Mason was the victim of abuse by his father. Knowing he couldn’t suffer anymore, he left town. My heart just broke for him because you could feel it hurt both of them when he left.
Now Katherine is unhappily married and raising her two daughters. When I say unhappily, I mean living with a cheating husband who makes her miserable. When Mason comes back to town, they feel their bond from years ago. The more they see each other, the more Katherine realizes she wants out of her marriage to be with Mason. Who can blame her? Mason is sex on a stick and her one true love.
I always enjoy a second chance romance and this book definitely delivered. I fell in love with Mason from the beginning. Even though their road wasn’t easy, they found their way back to each other. A.C. Bextor never ceases to amaze me with such a beautiful love story. I love the past and present scenes because you can see how it all began and how their relationship progressed. Katherine and Mason may not have started out together, but they ended up in a beautiful relationship. They are true soul mates and I recommend this book!
This was my first contemporary romance from A.C. Bextor, and I found myself wanting to gobble up her backlist instantly. It had all the feels. It was relatable. We all have that friend who is content with settling and drowns in their daily routine. But fear not, there’s more to life: there’s Mason Allen Cole.
This story was real, emotional, and raw from the onset. Katie met Mason when she was a young teen; he was her first crush. We catch glimpses of them while young and in love, witness them older and broken, and cheer that hopefully one day, they will reunite for good.
The book toggles between current time and several chronologically ordered flashbacks. Though I am typically not a fan of this style, it totally works for Katie and Mason. Any previous dislike for this methodology was instantly thrown out. There is no other way to tell this story. It permits the reader to grow with the characters and become invested, as well as hopeful for an eventual reunion.
Mason and Katherine were always destined to be together, but the windy road they traveled has so many twists and turns, you can’t help but feel the pain during their incredible journey. But it’s not all serious and gut-wrenching. AC Bextor has blended the story with some comic relief in the form of Katie’s daughter, Averie.
Absolute perfection. I felt everything these characters did. Without a doubt, one of my top reads of 2018!
This is a truly emotional read full of first loves, lost loves with devastating heartache, unconditional parental love and a second chance that leaves us with and HEA in the end.
Mason Cole is true alpha all the way, from the very young adult when we first meet him. He had a unexplained need to look out for Katie, make sure she was treated right. A man with a undesired upbringing determined to be more than the man who was his role model. His love for Katie was all consuming, but sometimes love doesn't happen at the right time and life gets in the way.
Katherine crushed on Mason as a young teen, years of friendship turned to a beautiful love. Life circumstances send Katherine on a different path. Loneliness and longing seem to be her norm these day. Thankful for the love of her children to keep her going.
Is there a possible chance for a second chance at the love they once knew? Is it possible to be Happy finally?
A.C. Bextor has made be a believer that for the right story, continual moving from past and present can work beautifully. If the story was told in sequence of events, the same impact would not have been felt by the readers. Please don't let this hold you back as this is a wonderful book that should be read.
*** Advanced copy provided in exchange for an honest review. ***
Honestly how much time and stars do we have because when the book was over I was upset that there weren’t any more pages. This is how a second chance romance should be written. The turbulence is worth the landing for sure. Katie always loved him, even when it was deemed wrong. His feelings evolved with the years, but they always brewed for her. He became a spectator in a one man show to her life throughout the years but he never gave up on the possibility to still be her hero and protector, even if it meant keeping away. Honestly, this is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year and I am sure it will be by the end of 2018. Keep Happy made my own heart happy.
I have to say after being over 60% through this book and not being sure what to make of it, I can honestly say that by the time I had reached the end I had decided in fact I didn't just like it, I loved it! Though not convinced by some of the characters, the twist at the end makes all worth it! one thing I can say, all the way through averie is hilarious!!
A gripping story of love and loss that expands over years. Sacrifice for the greater good that ends in regret. This story will give you all the feels, back and forth torture as well as hope for finally getting you first and only love.
I started reading this book and was only going to read a few chapters before dinner. Well it's now 6 hours later and I just read "the end". The reason why I couldn't put the story down? Mason Cole. I imagine he is the perfect first crush for teenaged girls everywhere.
This story is told in past and present tense and dual POVs. It's told in such a way that while I thought I knew exactly the how, what and where this story was going, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't go the way I thought.
There are two teenaged daughters in this story that I hope to read more about in the future - the youngest will have her own sit com some day.
This is a beautiful story. So much pain as we travel from past to present. I needed to put myself in time out a few times to not cry for these two lost people. I was worried about getting to the HEA without a breakdown. So many feelings for this story. I absolutely loved Averie, she steals the show every time. I also enjoyed young Katie Mae clearly her daughter takes after her. I didn’t agree with some of Katherine’s choices but I loved all of Katie Mae’s. Mason was perfection. I loved his conversations with all three of his girls. Somehow I couldn’t find anything redeeming about Thomas. He was a selfish husband and father. Overall I loved this story! You need to READ this now!

This story is one of my top 5 reads of 2018!! The story isn’t like those perfect Hollywood movies but it’s about the nitty gritty real life marriages and love stories!!! It’s a second chance romance, unhappy marriages and finding your true love!! Throw in some sassy teenagers and you have yourself a winner!! This story I couldn’t put down!!!
Mason and Katie have loved each other for years, but due to circumstances when they were younger, their lives took them on different paths. Now they have reconnected, and the chemistry is still as intense as it always was. Will these two have a second chance at love? No spoilers; this is a definite must read, you will not be disappointed! This is a beautifully written story, which is flawless, and is a raw, gritty, emotional and heartbreaking read, which is filled with anger, angst, hate, love which all lead to a truly powerful page turner. I was totally captivated throughout, and look forward to reading more of this authors’ work.
For me there were massive parts of the story that were missing. Big gaps, that left me the reader feeling like the story was incomplete. That left the love story lacking in emotions and understanding.
I think if those bits had been filled in (would have needed at least a third more for the story to Feel full) it would have been a 4.5 read.
“The minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along.” ~Rumi
Katherine Morris first met Mason Cole at the age of twelve. What begins as a great friendship eventually spawns into feelings of lust and love. Just as they begin to find a groove together as more than friends Mason is forced to make a difficult decision to leave town. He needs to escape his abusive father. Leaving Katherine behind is not an easy decision but one that has to be made for his wellbeing and the wellbeing of his mom and sister.
As difficult as this decision was on their relationship and the future, Katherine pushes onward in her life. She is married, albeit to a disgusting cheating man, Thomas and together they have two beautiful daughters. Both are living in an illusion of a life together for the sake of their daughters. They are determined to do what is best and attempt to raise the girls together under the guise of happiness. The cheating and hiding the truth has taken its toll on Katherine though. She doesn’t truly realize just how much until the one true love of her life, Mason, comes back to town and a second chance at a life together is on the table. Will Katherine decide that her happiness is just as important and give the second chance at love and happiness a try?
I found myself really on an emotional journey as I read this book. AC Bextor touches on several difficult topics, and really paints a great picture of how each issue affects all the involved parties. I found myself feeling bad for Thomas as much as I didn’t want to like him, I almost understood his actions in some instances. I also found myself really rooting for Mason and Katherine to finally have the happily ever after that they so much deserve. I was happy that it wasn’t a clean and perfect road to this though and it engaged me from the very beginning to the end. I adored the prologue to this story. It really hooked me and had me from these very first words.
Rumi was once quoted saying, “Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom.”
At the time I read this, I wasn’t sure I believed him. That was, until I realized how lost in my own life’s grief I had always been.
When I was young, I thought my life was going to go precisely as I’d planned.
I was going to finish college, earning my master’s degree in accounting, and follow in my father’s footsteps as I’d always imagined I would.
I was going to fall in love, marrying only the man of my dreams. Of course, I had no idea what he looked like, but I knew in order to love me how I wanted, he had to be storing, kind, and fill my soul with passion while enriching my life with excitement and understanding. I wouldn’t settle for less.
And I was going to be the best parent to however many children God saw fit to bless me with.
I never knew my mother. She and my father parted ways shortly after I was born. This left me to be raised as an only child to a single dad and regretful ex-husband.
Growing up, I didn’t always have a lot of friends. Yet those I came to truly tryst have been with me for as long as I can remember.
Now, after so much of my life has passed: all the triumphs, tears, happiness, and heartbreak, I’m married to the love of my life. The one man I was always supposed to find. Finally, I have my life the way I always dreamed it would be.
I’m a mother to beautiful children.
My home is everything I’d always envisioned.
Those who’ve come into my life are where they’re supposed to be. Some are faded memories of my past. And those I cherish still remain.
So looking back, I concur that Rumi was right.
The lessons I’ve learned were tough in coming.
The grief I‘ve harbored has finally been set free.
The tumultuous path I fought so hard along the way was worth all its torment and pain.
The garden of my life is rich, centered, and destined for even greater things.
My heart has finally found its peace.
There is something that really resonates in me when an author uses Rumi. I adore it and connect with his words so much. Another bonus with this book is that it has a playlist to accompany your reading and I loved it! Also this is book one in the Silvervale Second Chance Romance series so there will be more to come from AC Bextor, and I can’t wait to read it!
This story had so much potential! I liked it, but I didn't love it. This is a new to me author and the blurb and book cover caught my attention. I just found a few things that bothered me and I couldn't overlook so that's why it was a 3-star book for me. I did notice quite a few spelling errors. One word was combined with another and decree was degree. I try to look them over, but there were a few too many for my liking.
The story is told in different forms. It goes from past to present and it also goes back and forth between the main the characters points of view. The author handled this very well.
Katherine (Katie) meets (Cole) Mason when she's only twelve years old and he's much older. He works for her father and a young girl's crush is born. Due to their age difference, they can't be together so they are just friends, but in time, he becomes her first love and boyfriend.
Mason's home life is a terrible one. Even though he loves Katie he knows he has to leave. He breaks her heart to get away from a toxic home life so he can be a better man than his father.
Katherine is unhappily married to the man whom she replaced Mason with. She's basically raising her two daughters all alone. She's married, but both of them have emotionally, physically and mentally disconnected from each other.
Mason comes back to town and the two of them are drawn to each other. When their past collides with the present can they stay apart from each other or will they finally be together?
I don't mind cheating in a book, but just know, there's a lot of cheating in this book. A LOT.
The ending is my biggest issue. After a story like this, I want an amazing ending. This felt rushed and it was a HFN and not a HEA. That's probably due to the fact that the author is writing a book about one of Katie's daughters so we can see more of them in that book. I liked that this book was not your typical second chance romance. I think the author tried something different and did a good job.
This book was just... wow! I'm normally not a fan of reading about adultery, but the way this is written... I can't explain it, but it was so much more than that. It's about first loves, love lost, new chapters, disappointment, marriage, friendship, family, old flames, this book is so well thought out, and I'm certain, to some, many parts of this book are very relatable. This book was just so emotional!
Katie does what most mothers/wives do. She puts her kids, her family before herself. After learning about her husband's betrayal, Katie retreats, and Katherine takes over, going through the motions, but not really living like she should. It was painful reading this because I feel like this kind of thing happens a lot! I can't even begin to imagine what that must feel like, but I know how I felt reading about it and it was utterly heartbreaking. To see someone so full of life and have that light taken out of them, well it's crappy. She's broken and the only person able to fix her is the man she was always meant to be with.
Mason... I mean, I loved him from the beginning. Sometimes life throws you a crap hand, but you do the best you can with it. I was sad for what could have been for Katie and Mason. Things should have been different for them, however, Averie and Amelia might not have been in the picture, and Averie is like her momma to the tee. Would be a shame not to have that little spitfire around! Loved her to death!
Anyways, this book flips back and forth from past to present, which I'm not always a fan of, but it works well for this book. It was a struggle for me waiting for Katie to figure out what she needed to do. Maybe she isn't perfect, but she did her best with what life had laid out for her and I honestly don't hold anything against her. Strong for her girls, but unhappy with the path she's walking, Mason reminds her of who she is. She's a little lost, but she comes to a realization and so does her husband. I was ecstatic for Katie and Mason when things started clicking into place. A love like theirs should never have to be hidden. If I could give this book more than five stars I would. It's so well written and the moments... there were so many real moments, it was like I was Connie, watching my bestie go through all of this. I'm pretty excited about the next book and though I've only read one other book by this author... which was nothing like this one, I'm already a huge fan! Keep happy Ms. Bextor.
I will start off by saying OMG, this was an emotional and absolutely gut wrenching book. It shows Emotional neglect, loyalty, anger, kindness, hate, friendships, heartbreak, love, safety, selfishness and a way to be self aware. You see for every good there was a bad from beginning to end. In truth this book gutted me and showed me at a time in my own life that we all deserve more even as we all get older.
Mason and Katie have circled or Loved each other for over twenty years. When they fall in love when she is old enough his abusive fathers ways sends him leaving and her into another mans arms. She loves her husband as a provider, a friend and mostly as the father of her daughters. Problem her husband isn’t faithful and she’ll always love Mason he’s her safety and the person who she always wants to share herself with but her daughters will always come before her own happiness.
AC Bextor continues her heart wrenching way of writing in yet another book that is perfection from page 1 to the ending were I needed so much more. She could write this couple and these teen girls forever and I be so honored to read her words.
I really enjoyed this book the writing is flawless it kept me engrossed throughout. I really loved the characters and the way they interacted with each other. This is a fun, hot, romantic must read book and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
This book has everything I love in a book. Then you add that it's beautifully written and believable. It is easily a five star read. Written in dual POV my personal favorite this story flows so incredibly well that the next thing you know your 80% into the book and loving every second of it. The believable way the characters interact is perfect. Run, Hop, Jump or use your (1 click) finger to do whatever you have to do and get this amazing book. It'll break your heart, you'll want to scream with frustration and it'll let you discover that love just might conquer all. The chemistry is steamy and sweet and oh so romantic.
