Humorous, heartfelt, and awash in sweet romance, Bobbins and Boots captures the tender and tumultuous emotions of falling in love.
A hopeless romantic with a bit of sarcasm thrown in for good measure, Shanna Hatfield is a best-selling author of clean romantic fiction written with a healthy dose of humor.
In addition to blogging and eating too much chocolate, she is completely smitten with her husband, lovingly known as Captain Cavedweller.
Shanna creates character-driven romances with realistic heroes and heroines. Her historical westerns have been described as “reminiscent of the era captured by Bonanza and The Virginian” while her contemporary works have been called “laugh-out-loud funny, and a little heart-pumping sexy without being explicit in any way.”
She is a member of Western Writers of America, Women Writing the West, and Romance Writers of America.
I loved this book! The humor made me laugh out loud and the romance made me sigh. The town and ranch jumped off the pages and became real as I read. And when the book ended, I didn’t want to leave.
I immediately fell in love with Ben and Allie. Ben has such a pure, kind heart. He is easy going, hard working and an amazing husband. Allie is tentative and unsure to begin with, but also knows her strengths. She is so genuine and humble. I loved watching her grow in confidence and begin to understand and accept her inherent worth. The rest of the Baker City characters are back, as well. Yay!! Love them!
This is a great addition to the Baker City Brides series! It can be read as a stand alone, but something does happen that would be a bit of a spoiler for the earlier books. But whatever order you read them in, you’ll love the series!
I received a complimentary copy of the book. I have given my honest opinion.
Imagine heading into town to pick up a few essentials for the ranch you are working on and coming home with a bride! That's exactly what happened to young ranch hand Ben Amick. Mail-order bride Allie Tilman arrives in Baker City anticipating a wedding but to her shocking surprise the intended groom is the town's drunken sleazy loser. Poor sweet Allie escapes a hard-scrabble existence where she barely had enough food and literally slept on the dirt floor with her entire family in a one room sod house. At the hasty suggestion of good friend Sheriff Tully, Ben rashly rescues Allie from certain disaster by marrying her on-the-spot!
Thus begins the awkward post-wedding "courtship" of Ben and Allie. Thin and threadbare from a life of hardship, the Jordan ranch soon discovers a diamond-in-the-rough as hard-working Allie shows competency in everything she puts her hands to. Faithful ranch hand Ben goes out of his way to provide Allie with every comfort and personal possession she never thought she deserved.
In a delightful continuation of the Baker City Brides series, all of the close-knit and lovable characters make appearances, as well as the author's penchant for introducing some colorful and humorous animal friends.
As featured in the title, one of Allie's talents is her skill at creating bobbin lace, a gift her mother taught her. This reader/reviewer had to "Google" bobbin lace to figure out what made it so special. This ancient lace-making technique creates breath-taking beauty and gives Allie a means to support herself. It is the author's reverence for historical detail that helps give these stories such color, charm, and significance.
For me, this is the author's finest romantic example of two deserving people as they struggle from being total strangers to that emotional plateau of realizing love for one another. As in the author's story of Bertie, from the Pendleton Petticoats series, a blind-sided zinger of a surprise awaits the reader that changes everything for Ben, his bride and the Jordan ranch.
Although this story stands alone, a full appreciation of the previous events is realized in reading ALL of the stories in the Baker City Brides series. Just when I thought author Shanna Hatfield could not possibly out-do herself in this series, she manages to up her game still another notch.
I tried again to read a mail order bride story. It started out well. The writing was a little like a hallmark movie but I enjoyed it overall till the end and everything went haywire. It drug a little too long and was a little unbelievable. To add drama you don't need to go all crazy and have the characters do things completely out of character.
Ben would do anything to help, even marrying a mail order bride someone else sent for. As these two deal with the situation, falling in love is becoming very likely. The rollercoaster ride of emotions keeps you engaged. Shanna does not let up on the humor or the problems facing her characters. The secrets that come out will astonish readers. Another uplifting read. Get the details inside now.
This book showed up in my Amazon suggestion feed the other day and I jumped right on it. I have no idea how I didn't know it was coming out--I love this series. I loved getting to know Ben and Allie, and I thoroughly enjoyed returning to Thane and Jemma's ranch. My only lament is that I finished it too fast and I now have to wait a year before the next one!
Wow this had so many interesting twist and turns. I couldn't put it down. I love this series and recommend it to everyone who loves mystery and intrigue and most of all love and family.
It takes a special woman, a strong woman, to travel across a continent to meet a fate unknown, a groom, a life’s partner unknown. So many women did just that, replying to ads, becoming a mail order bride. For Allie, it was a concern, but she decided it couldn’t be worse than the home where she grew up with an abusive father, abusive brothers and dirt poor. Little did she know that the ad she answered was a lie and the man she was intended to marry was indeed worse than what she had left behind. Fortunately for her, kind souls rescued her from the train depot and a kind young man, Ben, showed up at just the right moment when her scoundrel of an intended husband tried to forcibly lay claim to her. And, she ended up marrying Ben, another unknown.
Allie didn’t have much with her, just her threadbare clothes and worn boots. Her most treasured possession was her lace-making supplies, a gift handed down from her grandmother, to her mother, to her. She was a very talented lace maker. As she and Ben got to know each other, Allie was able to content herself that she was helping by making lace to sell. Not to mention all the other things she did on the ranch where Ben worked.
But a story wouldn’t be complete without a conflict. This almost sounds too much like a lengthy happily-ever-after type of story. Shanna Hatfield’s fourth book in her Baker City Brides series, “Bobbins and Boots”, is a gentle story that develops a growing relationship between a man and a woman thrown together unexpectedly. The characters are well developed with genuine personalities and a dash of humor. What makes this book exceptional is that it’s a clean read, which is hard to find in contemporary writing. A good plot, good descriptions and strong characters – overall a pleasure to read.
Love, love, love this book! Ms. Hatfield has written yet another wonderfully satisfying sweet romance that had me sighing and swooning. As always, I loved catching up with the crew from her Baker City Brides series. I felt like I was welcomed in with a warm cup of tea to visit old friends and meet some new ones. I enjoyed catching up with each of the old friends and fell in love with the new ones. Allie is a sweet, yet strong, hardworking heroine with a not so wonderful home life that has caused her to believe she’s not worth much. Ben is a swoonworthy hero who is equally as hardworking as Allie while also maintaining a joyful spirit and zest for life. Getting to know them and watching them fall in love was an absolute pleasure. As usual with Ms. Hatfield’s books, I found myself both smiling and outright laughing out loud more than once at the antics of her lively characters. Her descriptions make the book come alive. She pulled me into Baker City and drew me out to the Jordan ranch with her words and made me feel like I was there. Not only did she write a perfectly sweet, yet sassy romance, Ms. Hatfield also threw in a couple of surprises along the way that I did not see coming. Love when an author can catch me off guard in a good way like that. I encourage you to read her note the end. It makes parts of the story even more real and quite funny as you read her note. It never fails-at the end of every one of Shanna Hatfield’s books my appetite for sweet romance has been perfectly sated, yet I am also looking forward to the next book with great anticipation. And I am always a little bit saddened to have to say goodbye to my book family until the next one comes out. **I was provided a copy of this book by the author. All opinions in this review are my own.
BACK OF THE BOOK BLURB (copied from Amazon.com) How does an act of kindness result in. . . marriage? One carefree cowboy is about to find out in this sweet historical romance! MY REVIEW Yes! Another winner by Shanna. Once I start reading one of her books I just can't seem to put them down until I am finished, she just pulls you straight into the story and won't let go. Allie's story pulls at your heart and just when she is having a blessed life, it all blows up. Believe me when I say you will love this series, be sure to read them in order though,
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. The main male character is Ben Amick, the ranch hand who played a secondary character in previous stories. He is appalled that an innocent young mail order bride has come to Baker City to marry Joe Lambrey, one of the laziest, sneakiest, meanest of its citizens.
Allie is no stranger to hard work having been raised in a large family in Nebraska in a sod house. Beatings were a regular occurence, as was hunger and Allie, although tall and willowy, was all bones. She realises what kind of man her intended husband is, as well as a liar and refuses to marry him. Now she is abandoned and destitute. Without giving it any thought, Ben steps in as a replacement husband in case Joe returns to claim Allie.
A thoughtful story. Watching Allie through the author's words mature from a fearful individual terrified of a man's anger believing they all used their fists. A woman who has never received a compliment in her life and finds it difficult to realise she has self worth has been an interesting read. I do prefer my characters to be more mature usualy, but this just felt right.
Bobbins and Boots has so many sweet, humorous and emotional moments in the book that I hated to see it end.
When Allie comes to Baker City, Oregon she had no idea what her life would be like . Allie just knew she rather be a mail order bride than live another day with her horrible family. But her to be husband was worse than anything she could of imagine , she only had 1 choice that was to marry Ben who just came to the boarding house to deliver pies .
Ben was just out running an errand for his boss Thane when next thing he knew he was getting married to a sweet , blue eyed really tall lady he didn’t even know. What did he know about marriage , but one look at Allie he knew he had to save her from the horrid life she’d have with Joe.
Allie and Ben’s story will grab your heart , there will be twist that you never saw coming. Plus little Lily is at her sassy , spunky self again keeping everyone one on their toes trying to keep her out of trouble. Plus you get to catch-up with all your Baker City Brides and their families making you feel like you just came home .
Allie Tilman came to Baker City as a mail order bride. When she arrived at the train station, there was no one to meet her. A kindly gentleman, Edwin Greenfield happened to be at the train station to collect supplies for a boarding house that he and his wife, Hattie owned and operated. Once they discovered who her groom was supposed to be (a low down, lazy, worthless excuse for a man) Joe Lambery and persuaded her to stay on with them. Not long after Allie had started working for the Greenfields when one of Thane Jordan's cow hands Ben Amick came by with some pies that Thanes's wife, Jemma had baked. While he was still at the boarding house, Joe Lambery showed up demanding that the Greenfields hand over his "bride." Tempers flared, punches were thrown and Lambery wound up in Jail. Sheriff Tully Barrett suggested that Ben marry Allie to keep Lambery away from the girl. Ben found himself suddenly with a bride he didn't know anything about. What has he gotten himself into?
This is a marriage of convenience sweet romance set in 1890. Allie traveled by train thousands of miles to Baker City in response to an advertisement for a mail order bride. No one meets her at the station and when she asks about her intended, people are horrified and let her know his description of himself was all lies. She is penniless and has no way home but is befriended by the owners of a boarding house while she figures out what to do. Ben is a well respected ranch hand on the most prosperous ranch in the area. While Ben is in town to pick up supplies he visits the boardinghouse just as Allie’s intended shows up. Ben offers to marry Allie to protect her. The two engage in polite and friendly conversation and interactions as they get to know each other. Their married strangers relationship slowly turns into deeper feelings. I enjoyed watching their personalities blossom together while they made their inevitable journey to their HEA. It was also good to visit with the characters from previous books as the story unfolded.
Baker City Brides series is one of my favorite by this author (even if I like pretty much anything she writes, even her recipes - and I'm not even interested in cooking!!). This book is my absolute favorite (jut before book 1 that I found asolutely delightful!): the characters did speak to my heart and the story was a mix of historical western romance, friendship, brotherhood tale and adventure. As usual it's clean but the feelings and passion between the characters are so well written it made my heart race more than a few times! Plus, the characters have moral and values that make Bobbins And Boots the perfect book for any romantic out there. I read the first book in paperback and the next 2 on my ereader but the covers are so gorgeous that I couldn't stop myself from buying this one just fot the sake of holding it! I already bought the next one and will dive into it as soon as possible!
A Nebraska farm girl falls in love with an Oregon Cowboy.
Loved being in Baker City again. Ben and Allie story was sweet. Ben was a very caring man he loved taking care of people and animals. Allie was his perfect help mate. Their marriage at first was just for her to get away from another man. But as they were together love bloomed and flourished. They had there ups and downs. So happy for Thane that he gained another brother in Ben. Jemma was a great help to Allie and Allie was the sister Jenna never had. Jack and Little Lily added spark to both house holds. So happy that Thane and Jenma are expecting. Tully, Brianna, Maggie and Ian are great friends to have. Edwin and Hattie make great grandparents to the whole bunch. Loved the ranch hands to on the Jordan\Amick ranch. Will go back and read others I haven't read in the series soon.
I think this might be my favorite in the series so far, although they are all excellent stories I really appreciate the research Shanna Hatfield put into this series. She said she remembered her mom said she wore feed sack dresses in the 1930s but I remember making dish towels out of feed sack cotton into the 1950s and 1960s. I don’t know when they actually stopped using the pattern printed cotton sacks for animal feed sold in rural farm stores on North Carolina, but they were of a good quality tightly woven 100% cotton and some of them were quite pretty, especially the cobalt blue patterns on a white background. I think you will really enjoy the surprise twist to this story. Enjoy 💜
Allie can make beautiful lace with bobbins while wearing boots, which helps her and her mother feed and care for her very large family. An opportunity comes her way from an advertisement for a mail order bride. Allie responds to the ad and before she knows it she is standing at the platform in Baker City, Oregon. When her fiancee doesn't meet the train to pick her up, she inquires about him and finds out he is a lying, scum bag that no woman would want to be married. What is she to do now? Along comes Ben Amick a very handsome cowboy that has no intentions of marrying at least not right now. Allie needs a hero and he steps up to the challenge and well....marries her! She is very grateful and he is very confused! Can these two learn to get along to make this marriage a "real" marriage? I really enjoyed reading this story of Allie and Ben. There are three other books in this series, but this book can read as a stand alone.
The prolific Shanna Hatfield’s output could keep the average reader occupied forever. As long as she puts out delight filled stories like this one, that’s not a chore. I love her details of farm chores, equipment, male friendships and town/rural life in 1890’s Oregon. Allie and Ben are a charming couple who face conflicts from their past to bond in sudden marshes. One big surprise rattled me. I was afraid that easygoing Ben and all his ties would not be mended. After you find out how he manages, stay to read Hatfield’s notes to see how she gets ideas, and to visit her Pinterest page for a gallery of items used in the books. Fun.
Bobbins and Boots is one of those books a reader never wants to end. It’s a book that the Characters come alive and burrow deep in one’s soul. Allie and Ben certainly have taken up residence in this reader’s heart. Bobbins and boots is my favorite of this series yet if one can really pick a favorite Shanna Hatfield book for all her books are heart touching fantastic!! There was a twist towards the end of this book that left me saying WOOOOOWWW I never saw that coming but oooohh how it added a whole new love for Baker City Brides series. Shanna Hatfield continues to touch deep in my Heart with each of her books.
If you haven't read any books by Shanna Hatfield, you are missing out on some great reading. "Bobbins and Boots" is the fourth book in the series but can stand alone. Some people are not whom they claim to be as Allie finds out when she arrives as a mail-order bride. Through an act of kindness mixed with insanity Ben steps up to the challenge. What challenge? Read the book! Shanna'a books are fun, exciting, characters you'll love and lessons to learn.
Blessings, Karen Hadley Rating: 5* I received this book as a gift, all opinions are my own.
I've read all the Baker City Brides so far and loved them all. Ben and Allies story was explosive from the very first page. I've loved Ben from the first book. Allie comes to town as a mail order bride not knowing that her husband to be is a horrible person. There are some drop your jaw surprises in this book that I never ever saw coming. A definite must, must read for any diehard romantics. I so hope that there will be more books coming for the Baker City Brides.
Oh, but this cover is lovely. I so enjoyed this sweet and tender story of Allie who needs a knight in her life. Allie has had a very tough life, and this has made her strong and kind and compassionate and sensitive as well as a hard worker. Ben has had a great life working for Thane on his ranch. He has learned how to be a hard worker, a gentleman who is sensitive and caring and kind from Thane. When he finds Allie in trouble, he helps out with out thinking. My emotions were all over the place with this wonderful story. Cant wait to read another in this series. Highly recommend.
i loved the story. i was given an arc copy and i am giving an honest review . i have read all of the books in the series and love them all. if you have read any of Shanna's books you need to read this one. all of the people from the other books are in this one but i could be read by its, elf. if you like cowboys, kittens, horses, children and ants all with a sense of humor you will love the book. thank you Shanna for another terrific story looking forward to more.
Allie is a mail order bride and the man she is to marry does not show up at the train depot. He turned out to be a real filthy old man who never bathes etc...and Allie is a girl from an abused home so this is the last thing she needs. The English Butler of Lady Jemma finds her and the story goes from there with lots of things happening and old couples in the previous books are intertwined in the story. Darling book I recommend reading it.
I had another fun adventure with this one. A mail order bride arrives for a wealthy rancher that turns out to be an angry lazy bum who lied about everything. But Ben steps in and offers to marry her, then he runs off to the ranch without her. Of course all the recent Baker City couples team up to make things better and the bum gets run out of town. You’ll have to read it to get the rest. Book 5 is next.
Allie is so courageous, she left her home to marry a man she had never met. She was to be a mail-order bride. The only thing is, the man is no good. Then in comes Ben and rescues her from that horrible future. I really loved Allie and Ben. Ben was very happy to help Allie, but all of a sudden he realized that he married a stranger. As they get to know each other, they learn about love. I really didn't expect the little twist near the end.
Another winner from the author. A beautifully written story with fantastically charming and memorable characters. Here's a story that is clean so all ages can enjoy a great read. There's caring, loving and some comedy. I loved it. Hated to put it down to eat or sleep. Wish I could give more stars, it deserves them.
