اریش: نمی‌تونی سرنوشت میلیون‌ها نفر رو بسپری به دست آدمایی که نمی‌تونن بدون تکون دادن لباشون چیزی رو بخونن. این کار یه حالت بدویه؛

هانس: می‌گن تو قرون وسطی هیچ کسی نمی‌تونست چیزی رو بخونه، بدون این‌که لباش تکون بخوره. امبروس اولین کسی بوده که تونسته این کار رو بکنه؛

اریش: با تشکر از هانس! (رو به کارل) حالا دوباره همون جوری شده. نازی‌ها! کسایی که حتی نمی‌تونن یه روزنامه بخونن بدون تکون دادن لباشون. روزگاری شده که پدیدارهای این دنیا با شهود به دست می‌آد نه با عقل و دانش. سئوالات هم به طور طبیعی نه بر اساس شواهد، که با توجه به عقاید عامه مردم جواب داده می‌شه. تمام بدعت‌گذارا رو هم که دارن از بین می‌برن. همه اینا با هم نشون می‌ده که دوباره برگشتیم به قرون وسطی؛

Amazing play! It really brought to life what life would have been like in German just before Hitler came to power. It was very effecting. Highly recommend this! It only took about three hours to read.

A grim but well-written tale about a victim of Nazi persecution. It follows the true story of a lawyer taken into 'protective custody' and his mother's efforts to secure his release. As a play, its only weakness is that much of the narrative is delivered by the mother directly to the audience, which is static and undramatic.

Not an easy read with some difficult scenes but very well crafted. All characters are fully formed (I know they are real people) so not always easy to flesh out dialogue and interactions of things that you were not witness to. Not for the faint hearted but well worth it.
