This book reminded me of an old Sandra Dee movie called If A Man Answers. They even mentioned it in the book. It was an interesting plot idea where the young heroine gets the idea to write her next book about training up the perfect boyfriend using techniques from her dog's obedience school. It was cute. If this plot interests you, I highly recommend finding the movie. It is hilarious!
I couldn't believe the main female character. It was just horrible. It's all about her. She has no consideration or feeling for anyone. She ruthlessly uses everyone around her. She walks around completely lost in her own head and destroys things and people around her. She killed her own horse out of sheer stupidity. She put her "beloved" dog in danger because she wanted to do something. She abuses the systems put in place to help people. Entitled. Self-centered. Thoughtless. This is what villains are supposed to be made of, not heroines!
I could go on... It was really that bad. I could not connect on any level with this woman. Even her love for her dog is self-centered. Just... unbelievable.
If you want to get really irritated read this book.
Sweet and Fun, a little bit like eating cotton candy until you meet Paxton. Annie is jilted in love and wishes a man could behave just like her Yorkshire terrier, well if she ever got him trained. Desperate to meet a deadline she decides to apply doggy training techniques to her next beau and write about it. But what if the groom in question is wise to her plan? And what if the man training her dog catches her eye instead? This is a romantic comedy, clean enough for grandma and your teenage daughter.
There was a lot going on in this sweet romance! She's an author that needs an idea and she has a dog that needs to be trained. She puts the two ideas together and the comedy begins. I was frustrated when she kissed Kai. Blech! Things work out, although I did cry a little about Tim.
I loved the idea of a "How to train your husband" but I felt like the book barely even went with that plotline. I felt like this book had no idea what it wanted to be. First we meet Paxton and I'm intrigued, then we meet Annie and she is so selfish and I never liked her or how she had to bring her dog with her everywhere. She's an author and is searching for inspiration but only receives its from Paxton's kisses, cute at the idea but she barely knows him and he takes such liberties.
Somehow they fell in love like super fast that its kind of unbelievable because they saw each other like twice. The storyline with his great-grandpa was interesting but here's where the book can't decide what it is. Annie is a romance author but her "friends" call her a journalist. And she needs to write a book and she's dodging calls from her agent and then she decides to write a biography and then the last few pages are that- the biography from World War 2.
I'm pretty disappointed and feel cheated. Everything worked out so perfectly and I don't feel like Annie grew any to outgrow the selfishness. At one point, she's kissing Paxton and she's wrapped up in her inspiration for a book and then when she comes out of it, she says to him "Oh you're still here?" I kind of liked him but how could he still be drawn to her after she said that?

First Glance: Terrence Family Romance Book 1 is by Sarah Gay. The book is an excellent book. It is well-written and definitely keeps your attention. The twists she ads to the books are quite cunning. When you find them, your entire feeling for the book changes. Fabulous story. Paxton Terrence has finally met the love of his life and she doesn’t like him. He turns to his cousin and best friend, Zee, for advice. Zee tells him to go ahead and tell her what he wants. If she doesn’t agree, it is best to know now rather than later. So, Paxton sets out to meet and talk to Annie. Their conversation is fine; but Annie has decided on another story which involves training a man to be her husband. She doesn’t see Paxton in that situation although he does give her tips as to where to get help to train Mr. Famous, her dog. Her choice of man to train is Kai Terrence, Paxton’s cousin. What else will Annie find on her quest to find a boyfriend and to do the work she has been hired to do?
Annie and Paxton had a cute story with some adorable dogs to make it even better. There were points I laughed aloud and a few I wanted to cry over. I couldn't help but shake my head at the idea of training a guy like you would a dog. I would seriously hope that a guy would be smart enough to see through it and a girl smart enough to not try. The only downside to the story is I felt like the backstory to Annie should have maybe come a little earlier in the book as it would help to understand her reluctance to trust Paxton and her feelings for him. Tiny little bits were given as you read that gave you a small idea, but not quite enough. Even with this, the characters were fun to read about. Give it a go!
Wow! When I first started this book, I was having a hard time staying interested. I got it because of the beautiful cover, but stories about dogs just don’t interest me. But then, something grabbed me and I was hooked. Paxton, a former seal, and his dog, Charlie, had a chance meeting with Annie and her dog, Mr. Famous. Annie is a romance writer with a bit of writer’s block. See, nothing special. But by the end of the book I was totally blown away with what the character Annie wrote. It was so amazing! The characters are well developed, and Sarah Gay has a wonderful way of making you see, taste, and smell what she is writing about. The ending requires tissues. Thanks, Sarah, for providing this book for me. I loved it and hope my voluntary review causes someone to try it!
I didn't make it past the second chapter due to the descriptions of things. The heroine is a best selling author, but she speaks and acts in a juvenile manner. The premise of the novel is that men can be trained like dogs. The fact that she's not been able to train her own dog doesn't speak well of the idea. Also, humans are not animals so the idea of using dog training methods is abhorrent. I realize it's meant to be amusing, but the writing wasn't for me. Two stars because the author finished. I would suggest an editor to tighten the manuscript.
This was a great read. It was a little disconcerting at first then funny when Annie goes off in writer's Neverland everytime Paxton kisses her. She vacillates between Paxton and Kai while writing her latest book. As her deadline draws near she also meets Tim, Paxton's great grandfather and finds he met her great grandfather in WW1. Tim's story was very moving. You'll love it.
Any book that can cause me to laugh uproarious or cause me to cry with the same abandon, will always earn a five star rating from me! There was nothing to dislike about Annie and Paxton's journey - I rooted for them almost from the beginning, however I did feel a bit sorry for Kai. I'm awfully glad that Paxton won that wrestling match. This a great read and I recommend it highly!
I like this author. This was a great story. The lead characters, Paxton and Annie, were great characters, especially Annie. I liked the family life. Not a lot of emphasis was put on settings. They each had a dog. On to the next in the series, can hardly wait.
I picked this one up because I REALLY liked #4 in the Terrence Family series. I wanted to read more about Kai and Paxton. I am not a dog lover, so that might be why I was not thrilled with this one. I do like that Annie realized her mistakes and grew from them. Her relationship with Paxon's great-grandpa is one of my favorite parts of this story.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. I am very allergic to dogs and am therefore NOT a dog lover. At the start of the book, I found Annie's behavior immature and condescending, especially toward Kai. Once Annie went home to Wisconsin, I love the relationship she developed with Tim and later Paxton. I usually really like books by Sarah Gay but this one is not my favorites
It took me some time to get into this book. Once I did it was a cute clean romance worth the read. First book read by this author but I will definitely be reading some more.
I found this book to be fun read and as whimsical and unusal. The descript to be are numerous and too much hoping to get over with. I was curious about Paxton ,a character in the book. A light read, just curious.
I was sucked into the story of Annie and Paxton. Especially since women go through this fear of heartache as well as trust. They were meant to be together. Including Tim just turned it into a Hallmark Movie that I would totally watch!!
This book was so well written and gave me all the feels. I loved Annie’s character and her dog, Mr. Famous, too. I laughed and cried. Then spent a couple hours thinking about the book.
I enjoyed the story. The romance was very simple, but the emotions were poignant. Occasionally I felt like the story didn’t flow great, that the scenes were a bit disjointed and even unnecessary. But I loved how everything played out in the end.
I love how Annie drifts into "scenes" from a story during her kisses with Paxton. I really like her relationship with Tim. His passing was so touching. I'm happy he went to be with his sweetheart. I would recommend this story to any reader that enjoys clean romances.
Annie is a very interesting person. She feels like she is a failure. She is having trouble finding Mr. Right. Then along comes Paxton. The struggle begins for their relationship. This is a very interesting and informative story.
There's humor, romance and sadness but not enough to be overwhelming. Sarah has an incredible way of transporting us to faraway places in a nano second. Delightful reading. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
Really good characters, a unique plot and strong storytelling make this an excellent read. Annie and Paxton have a good story, and weaving in Tim is nicely done.
