"Iconic Highway 395. Originally known as El Camino Sierra, this magical ribbon of blacktop has been taking people on a sentimental journey for over 100 years. Rarely does a roadway invoke such nostalgic memories as The Mountain Highway. Tales Along El Camino Sierra is a collection of little known stories involving people, places and events that have taken place over the years, in the beautiful lands of the Eastern Sierra. These engaging and often amusing narratives bring to life the area's rich human history, that has not only helped shape the social culture of this cherished region but have often created an enduring impact upon the human psyche."
This a very informative compilation of Eastern Sierra tales along the world's most beautiful highway. There's quite a few stories I'd never heard and am inspired to visit some of these locations I've overlooked.
Loved this. I’ve been driving the 395 to June Lake since I was a little kid and I loved the anecdotes and history of this road. Adds so much more context to the sites and it’s clearly written by people who have a lot of love for this amazing part of the world. Highly recommended.
This book really helped to focus my attention as we drove to Los Angeles from our family cabin on Silver Lake in the Sierra Nevadas. Great source of info.
Fantastic MUST read about the 395 in California along the eastern Sierras. SO many good stories I never knew. If you drive this road, you HAVE to read this book.
My friend Missy regularly kidnaps me from Bakersfield to Bishop, and she grabbed a copy of this book at one of the local stores a long while back. I've regularly perused it, but always busy "seeing the sights" to actually read it. For the Mule Days 2019 trip, I ordered the Kindle version & just finished it.
Excellent writing on the history of the area. Key people and locations.
There are some Kindle transfer errors. (A missing picture or two, etc.) But all the words are there.
As soon as it's sequel gets the Kindle version made, I will order and read it as well.
This is a wonderful glimpse into the beautiful Eastern Sierra area along the 395. I am encouraged to explore new areas in the Owens Valley and beyond to seek out the hidden histories and treasures that this book opened up for me. I am inclined to long for the days of auto clubs and Norman Clyde.
Picked up this book while on vacation in Mammoth. What a gem! It's so well written (who in the world would have thought anyone could describe a hot, black highway with such beautiful poetry!). I shared what I learned the entire drive home with my family. THANK YOU for writing this book, David and Gayle! Everyone vacationing in Mammoth needs to get a coypy!
