Ta bogato ilustrowana książka to nowa historia SS – ukochanej a zarazem najbardziej zbrodniczej i okrytej największą niesławą formacji militarnej Hitlera.
Autor – znakomity znawca historii militarnej oraz techniki wojskowej – przestawia dzieje powstania i rozwoju SS oraz jej udział w wojennych zmaganiach w ramach sił zbrojnych Trzeciej Rzeszy. Od skromnych początków w latach 20. w roli straży przybocznej Hitlera SS szybko rozrosła się w wielką organizację militarną skupiającą setki tysięcy ludzi, która wystawiła własną armię (Waffen-SS) liczącą prawie 40 dywizji, a jej policyjne ramię (Allgemeine-SS) prowadziło zbrodniczą politykę rasową. A nice introduction to the SS. The SS (Stosstrupp Adolf Hitler) was a number of things--Hitler's body guard, law enforcement duties, concentration camp controllers, and soldiers (the Waffen-SS). This volume examines the work of the SS from 1939-1945. Early on, there was competition between the SA and the SS (to be devoted to Hitler, whereas the SA had other ambitions). With the demise of the SA, the SS became that much more important.
The SS had two elements--the Waffen-SS, the military arm, and the Allgemeine-SS, a police and security force with tentacles throughout German society. The second chapter lays out the variety of responsibilities of the Allgemeine-SS nicely. In addition to describing the "tentacles," this discussion also considers recruitment and training, symbolism (the death's head--totenkopf), uniforms, flags, and so on.
Then, the Waffen-SS. Appearance, equipment, training, weapons, tactics, and famous commanders, such as Sepp Dietrich. Some of the more legendary divisions in the Waffen-SS: Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, Das Reich, and Totenkopf. Other formations emerged, too, such as Wiking, a division made up of volunteers from Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, etc. The racial exclusivity of the Waffen-SS began to be compromised as needs for soldiers became more pressing as the war continued.
The book discusses the fighting power of the Waffen-SS—and its slow disintegration as it was bled to death in the Soviet Union and in France after the Normandy invasion. There were a few last hurrahs, such as in the Battle of the Bulge, but this element was slowly ground down due to causalities and inferior replacements.
Overall, an accessible and readable portrayal of the SS. . . .

I think the material for this book - SS - was a very interesting idea to explore. However, the author only provided extensive battle information. I believe the author should have included more information about their atrocities, the training, their beliefs, etc., and not just focus on their time in the theater, which his explanations got to be pretty confusing. I also think that the book lacked a sort of cohesion, the pictures in each page didn’t really elaborate on what was being explained in each topic, it would have made some parts of the book easier to understand (especially to people who don’t know much about the military). Overall, I feel like I learned some pretty interesting facts about the SS, I was just left with the need for more.

Nie da się ukryć, że formacja SS budzi przerażenie, odrazę jak i fascynacje wielu. Zwłaszcza po zagłębieniu się w historię tej jednostki, która przypomina równie pochyłą sowicie podlaną ego i samozadowoleniem pewnych indywiduów. Kto jednak wiedział na początku, jak coś się skończy? Chyba tylko wróżbici zapiszczał Lisioł znad magicznej kuli. Dlatego dobrze jest zacząć od początku z lekturą „Waffen-SS. Elita Hitlera” autorstwa Chrisa McNaba.

Książka w ciekawy i szczegółowy sposób opisuje powstanie i rozwój SS, a także jej struktury. Lisioł piszczy Wam, że to bardziej skomplikowane niż może się wydawać na pierwszy rzut oka. To nie była magiczna sztuczka, samo SS nie pojawiło się znikąd, ale w toku żmudnego procesu, napędzanego ambicją jednego człowieka. Lisie spojrzenie na niewysokiego człowieka w okularach Lisioł Wam podpowie, aryjskim ideałem to on nie był!

Opisane zostały dni chwały, kiedy to posiadanie pistoletu maszynowego MP 40 i lornetki to było coś! Krzyk mody z katalogu „lato 1941”. W trakcie wojny to można było się popisywać, bo było czym. Przed tym całym wielkim buum to krzykiem mody była ukradziona stara haubica. Ewidentnie wojsko nie lubi się dzielić dobrym sprzętem i Lisioł wcale im się nie dziwi! SS przed wojną w niczym nie przypominało jednostek, które zwykle pokazuje się w grach lub filmach.

Prócz frontowych „przygód” znanych jednostek Waffen-SS, w książce znajdziecie też te mniej lub lepiejznane zbrodnie wojenne. Książka cechuje się uczciwym podejściem do tematu, więc spokojnie można ją nazwać kompleksowym źródłem wiedzy, uzupełnionym przez świetny materiał fotograficzny oraz rysunkowy.

Są też rozdziały poświęcone dywizjom zagranicznym. Ciekawie się ogląda np. afisz nawołujący Norwegów do podjęcia takiej służby. Wyobraźcie sobie człowieka ubranego w całości na biało i gębą zdobioną przez czarną maskę. Zachęcające prawda? Chociaż w sumie czapki bałkańskich żołnierzy z czaszkami też są niczego sobie… W sumie na walorach estetycznych kończą się zalety.

O tym jak Waffen-SS zakończyła swój szlak bojowy, Lisioł nie musi raczej wspominać. Samą książkę poleca zafascynowanym historią i ludziom dopiero zaczynającym zgłębiać ten temat.

This is an excellent organizational history of this unusual force. Despite what Nazi propaganda portrayed, the Waffen SS was more like a Nazi version of the foreign legion containing Muslim units from Eastern Europe and even Indian units. Despite some of these units' combat prowess and tactical innovations, nothing will erase the stain their inhuman acts have left on world history.

A well researched and informative book exploring one of history's infamous and unsavory military organizations. Very strong data collection on the origination, structure, and implementation of the Nazi SS during WW TWO.

This book had excellent imagery and descriptions/text. Indeed, the Waffen-SS wasn’t just elite Panzergrenadiers but was often foreign forces, and the algemeine-SS was the enforcing rule of the Nazi state-owning up to 90% of the state’s economy. A very interesting look into it all.

Bardzo dobrze rozwinięty temat, do którego autor podszedł ściśle naukowo. W książce są też zdjęcia przykładowych mundurów Waffen SS z różnych okresów II Wojny Światowej i różnych państw.

Excellent review of military formations groupings and leadership
impressive use of plates or drawings to illustrate the various uniforms and nuances between the branches. good description of recruitment efforts and what importance was placed upon discipline and a host of items imbued with almost relic like status such as the tormenting ring. would have liked to read more about the doctrines and the mythology behind the movement. nonetheless an excellent primer on the SS and gives you good background on its major leaders that will encourage some to dig deeper. by the way, this writer does not attempt to sugar coat the atrocities committed by the SS but instead tries to provide balance showing which units are responsible and why.

Competent enough as a documentary overview, with the accompanying unscholarly and unsolicited declarations of politically correct orthodoxy taken in stride as a sad modern norm - the intellectually dishonest rhetoric and intentionally unflattering illustrations are interestingly counterbalanced with the inclusion of genuine photographs depicting a far nobler élite.
