Still mourning the loss of her beloved grandmother and shaken by her mysterious, dying request, Abbi has just arrived at UW Madison for her freshman year. But on her second day, she wakes up to a different world: 1983. That is just the first stop on Abbi's journey backward through time. Will is a charming college freshman from 1927 who travels forward through time. When Abbi and Will meet in the middle, love adds another complication to their lives. Communicating across time through a buried time capsule, they try to decode the mystery of their travel, find a lost baby, and plead with their champion, a kindly physics professor, to help them find each other again ... even though the professor is younger each time Abbi meets him. This page-turning story full of romance, twists, and delightful details about campus life then and now will stay with readers long after the book's satisfying end.

THE REVIEW

Why this book?

Time travel books interest me

What I thought

This is a hard book to review, I have major mixed feelings. The time travel aspect was interesting, but her and Will meeting up in different times confused me. As for the story it was a bit slow and never quite gained momentum. One of the biggest problems was the execution. With that said what I did like was the characters sure Abbi got on my nerves sometimes, but I loved Will. It was also fun to see what surprises each year would bring. I really loved the year that she was with her grandmother. Last but not least the romance It was sweet, happened a bit too fast; but I could live with it. Overall a okay read that I recommend to time travel fans

2.5/3 stars. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this time travel centric story. There were certainly moments where I debated that it was going to be a DNF. The premise is clearly stated in the book description so I won't regurgitate it here.

I really liked the author's note which details how the author's own personal history sparked her interest in placing it in her next novel. Everything else-the constant time travel in almost every chapter for the first half of the text and the so-so romance between Abbi and Will didn't hold my interest for long. Were my expectations too high? A real hit and miss for me.

Thanks to NetGalley for an uncorrected proof of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mini review:

DNF

I received this E-ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

When I got this book I found that I had lost interest in this book. I'm also tired of relatives of the many characters sending them on some dumb task.

It's up to you to read or not read this book.

I take some time before I decide to rate a book with 5 stars. It's difficult to hold a book up to my all-time favorites but I definitely finished Angie Stanton's Waking in Time on a major high! LOVED IT!

Admittedly, it took some time for me to fall in love with this book--about 25-30% of the way through to be exact. I felt that the beginning of the book was a little fast-paced and didn't give me enough character and plot development details to hold my interest. I even contemplated moving this title to my "abandoned" shelf until I hit that 25-30% mark and then I was ALL IN! Don't give up on this book. It's a keeper!

I do adore the time travel sub-genre of YA fiction and the history of these characters was somewhat predictable but never disturbingly so and never unlikeable. I was a fan of every character. The romance aspect was also lovely. There's so much more to say but I want to keep my review spoiler-free.

If you enjoy YA and time travel, and/or believe in soul mates and fate, then this is the book for you!

Thank you, NetGalley and Capstone, for providing me with an advanced copy of Waking in Time in exchange for an honest review. I am heading over to Amazon now to preorder my own copy so I can reread it again and again!

Abbi aka Abigail is about to start her first year at College. The same college that her Grandmother and Great-Grandmother attended, growing up she had always heard amazing stories about the college campus. The thing though is her grandmother has currently passed away, so though it is a rejoiceful time it is also a sad time. Abbi arrives at college with a quilt her Grandmother made her and also a hatbox with photos from her Grandmother's life including one of her Grandmother and a friend that looks exactly like Abbi. That night Abbi goes out to a bonfire party and meets Colton who is a grandson of WC Smith - an ex-professor at the University. That night though, as Abbi falls asleep will begin a descent into the past as Abbi ends up traveling through times and different decades at the College. It turns out she is a time traveler and not the only one - while Abbi can only go backward, Will who was from the year 1927 seems to be going forwards. As Abbi starts going further and further back in history, she starts to wonder whether she will ever get back to her "time" in history. During the book, she also stays in contact in the different periods with Smitty aka Professor WC Smith. One of my favorite parts of Waking in Time was when Abbi got to spend time with her Grandmother and her Great-Grandparents as teenagers. I also loved how Angie tied everything together in the last chapter; this ending would have to be one of my favorites in a book that I read in a long time. It was one of those perfect endings, which made you fill with happiness and excitement. If you love time-travelling and Teen/NA crossover books and also family genealogy and wanting a new author to discover, then check out Waking in Time by Angie Stanton today.

The story is about a young woman called Abbi who is just beginning her first year at University . She is really pleased to be going to the same University as her grandmother did despite her mother's reservations about being so far from home . I knew little about this plot before I started this story so it quickly gained my interest when I found out there was lots of family secrets , time travel , love and plenty of adventures . This was so awesome! All the women in Abbi's family are gutsy likeable females so you see where she gets her sense of adventure and smarts from . This is the perfect story for any time travelling book fans out there , it was a really fun read and there is enough family history of Abbi's to keep the plot very interesting. Loved it!

This was a fun and entertaining book about time travelling. I love time travelling books so I was really excited to read this one. It didn’t turn out to be that good as I hoped it would be, but still it was worth the read.
It followed the main character Aby. She goes to the same collage as her recently passed away grandmother. One day after she falls asleep she wakes up in a different time. Everything else is the same – the bed, room, also the things on her bed travel with her. But she realizes that she’s travelling back in time. While she is trying to figure out what’s going on, she meets professor Smith that she has supposedly met in the past (or her future) and Will, another time traveler, but he travels in the future. (that was a really bad way to summarize what happens, but I hope you get the idea).
Overall the time travelling part is really well done. The author is obviously not a physicist, but I was pleasantly surprised that she at least tried to give an explanation. Also it was nice that the time travel wasn’t connected with magic, here it was more scientific like physic based.
It was really interesting how she was travelling back in time and he was going forward.
Maybe my only problem was the love story. It was a little bit weird so say the least. When she first meets Will he is already in love with her because she knows her from the past, but she doesn’t know him, because that’s her future. It was a little bit like she liked him only because he was in love with her. Same goes for him, when he first met her, she already knew him. Hope that it doesn’t sound too confusing, in the book it’s well explained, but it’s hard for explaining otherwise. Never mind the point is that the love story was a bit weird and a little forced in my opinion.
I really liked Aby, she was a really good main character. She was funny and strong.
Overall this was a good book and I’m glad I read it.

Waking in Time is about a girl who, one day, wakes up to discover that she's travelled back in time and that whenever she goes to sleep at night, she travels farther back; first 1983, then 1970, and so on. She finds out that there's another person, a boy named Will, who travels further in time. They fall in love and now they have to find out how to stop travelling in time so they can find each other again. And there's also the complication of finding a missing baby...

But the baby is more of an afterthought and I don't even know what the point of adding him/her to the novel was.

I really liked the concept of the book and the fact that it was set in a contained loop (like in Harry Potter) where you can't go back and change the future because that change has already been taken into account in the present (it's a bit hard to explain).

But the book doesn't live up to its promise. While the writing wasn't bad, the dialogue was not good. The author, it seems, didn't put much effort into finding out how people talked in the past. Maybe a brief Google search and nothing else. And what made it worse was that she did realize that she had to make them sound different but didn't care.

Her efforts went as far as, Oh, It's been two pages! Quick, write something really obvious to remind the reader that this is the past or that the protagonist is from the future!

It did not work. It was usually eye-roll inducing. A few examples:
"Are you going all woo woo on me?" I tease.
His brow wrinkles. "I don't understand. What is woo woo?"
I laugh. "It's believing in spirits and special powers."

And

"Why would you have yourself tattooed?" he asks.
"In my time we call it a tat."

Now, 'tat' I could almost, almost, ignore. But 'woo woo'? Have you ever heard this phrase used? Because I haven't. Absolutely ridiculous.

On top of that, Abbi has to be one of the dumbest protagonists I've ever come across and I'm pretty sure it was because the author didn't know what to do with a smart one. I mean, if she were smart, she would have thought about things and been curious for answers. That would've been a disaster because the book doesn't provide answers. Just a half-assed (more like a tenth-assed) explanation for only one of a dozen things. That's it.

Also, I like a strong female character as much as anyone else, but I would rather not have it shoved down my throat by a whiny idiot with a short fuse. For example:
"the future women are strong, they aren't all 'helpless, poor me', like so many women in this time."

This was said by a girl who, in a tantrum, took a boat out in a lake right before a rain storm even though she could barely row, and managed to get herself stuck but losing one oar. And a girl who was clinging to a dude's "hard chest" because of darkness and bats. *rolls eye*

Then there was other stupid stuff like Abbi telling Will that investing in Apple will help him make money (because it's apparently that easy) or her conveniently forgetting things so that the plot could move on, or hours going by in a matter of minutes because the author didn't know what she should make Abbi do in that time. There were actually a lot of convenient things that were there to make the author's job easier.

Honestly, the more I think, the more flaws I see. And this review has already gotten very long so I'm going to stop now, even though I could quote so many lines that make this book sound even dumber. It does a bad job of time travel and a bad job of romance.

Just... don't read it.

{My thoughts} – Abigail and Will are two incredible individuals. They are both time travels – one goes back in time, and one goes forward in time. They meet each other at various times throughout their travels.

Time travel is an interest of mine, I have always enjoyed most books I have read that have been revolved around this particular aspect. This book didn’t disappoint me, it made me laugh and it made me almost tear up. It had a nice little mystery woven between its pages that helped to keep the not so intriguing romance aspect tolerable. In the end it was well written and well executed.

The way in which it is written has the potential to come of is slow and confusing. However, once you get into the book the style in which it is written becomes clear and it is easy to understand what is what and make sense of the words within it’s pages.

I do think that others that enjoy time travel books will enjoy this book as well, however, upon beginning the book you will need to keep an open mind and know that in the end it will all make sense.

This book is amazing! I did not have a hard time following along with the time travel. Loved Abbi and Will and all of the secondary characters. The only thing I wish was for more at the end. A little more detail as to what happens for them together. I feel like it ended abruptly. Overall though I fell in love with another one of Angies books!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!  The book was just released on March 1st.

I honestly enjoyed this story more than I thought I would.  In the interest of full disclosure, I chose it because I wanted a nice easy read for my vacation down south.  I thought this would be a good choice to pass the time and catch some rays without too much commitment.

The story captured me and got me thinking much more than I thought it would.  As the synopsis mentions, it is about two people who are travelling in time in opposite directions.  What held my attention was how Stanton managed to have the paths of these people cross multiple times and have it still work.  The logical side of me kept mapping everything out in my head to see if it could actually be feasible.  Well as feasible as time travel is anyway.

This story also held more depth than I was expecting.  I was lost in the story of Abbi's grandmother and her grandmothers mother.  This was an interesting way to unravel the mystery that was the "baby".  It is not just a YA read but it has a bit of history in it as well as the reader gets to experience the UW Madison through several different eras, and fashions.

I feel that this story will be well liked by many different demographics and I can certainly say that it was a win for me!

3.5 stars -- I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.

Well damn. This book was sooooooo weird for me. I was extremely compelled to read it, and couldn't put it down (staying up until the wee hours of the night to finish it). But I was also kind of unsatisfied with many aspects of the story, and I'm not exactly sure what was compelling me. Honestly, I think I just wanted to know the answers. I wanted to know the different mysteries, and I wanted to know how the time travel was going to work and be explained.

I can honestly say that the mysteries were my favourite parts of the story, from how the time travel was working to the lost baby plotline, even though the lost baby mystery wasn't really remembered and reintroduced until fairly late in the story. I think it's so odd when something is part of the blurb, or mentioned at the very beginning, but ends up only being a small part of the plot as a whole. I wasn't expecting that, and it was kind of frustrating how it kept getting lost in the shuffle. But at the same time I was really interested in finding out, and while I had some theories pretty early on that ended up coming to fruition, I was still really satisfied with the way that worked out. I think I just would have liked for it to play a more central role in the book, instead it felt a bit tacked on...even though there was groundwork laid earlier, we as the reader didn't know that. I don't know...

And then there's the time travel. I found it really compelling, but I have to say the explanation was very underwhelming. But I think it still ended up being enjoyable for me, just because of the way the time travel was working and the theories I would come up with in my head, and that anticipation, that even though I was unsatisfied with the explanation, it still made for a fun read. I think time travel is extremely hard to get right, and in the end this book just left me with a lot of confusing questions and plot holes, which is a shame. Also, if you're looking for a time travel book that's science based, this book isn't for you. This was more just hand-wavy in the end...which would have been ok if a major part of the book wasn't about the Physics Professor making it his life's work to figure it out. *shrugs* See? Mixed bag.
Honestly, I could write a lot more negative things about this book than positive things. Abbi was not a very well-developed character, and I really couldn't tell you what she was like, what interested her, any of that. She was extremely shallow. She was really just a vehicle for the plot I guess. Which is kind of disappointing when she's your MC and voice. The Professor, Sharon, Ruby, and even Walter a bit, were more interesting and 3 dimensional.

The love interest, Will, was very sweet, but we really don't learn much about his journey either. And I was even less satisfied with his reasons for time travel than I was for Abbi's (I was satisfied with Abbi's). And while the romance was sweet, it was a bit insta-lovey just because of the nature of the way their stories intertwine, and because we don't really get to see them connect, it's sort of glossed over in that they share time talking over weeks or whatever. I want to see that chemistry and connection, not just have it exist out of nowhere. And it really wasn't a very prominent part of the book either, just a small section.

So see? Not a lot of positive to say, but at the same time I really was entertained. It was a quick read. I'm not sure how well Ms. Stanton did getting the historical stuff right, but I've never been a historical book reader so that wasn't what drew me to the book. In the end it was pretty light on history, mostly just shallow details there as well. So I guess I would mostly recommend this to those who enjoy a good mystery. Because in the end that's what drew me in and had me turning the pages to find the answers. I'm just not going to guarantee that you will be satisfied with the time travel resolution.

Time travel. These types of reads are always a hit with me. The idea of someone from our time mysteriously whisked back or forward in time, carrying nothing to survive but their instinct, wit and knowledge of history. This is what 'Waking in Time'gave us! A methodically well written story about Abbi and Will, two people who are separated by decades and time. I first judged the book too quickly, thinking it moved too slow. But I unknowingly got pulled in. Important world building happened, intrigue and mysteries needed to be solved. Why is Abbi travelling? Will she be found out? How will she make it stop? Even the mystery of this missing baby became a curious plot twist. The ending felt very sudden, but I guess it had to end somewhere. This read was pretty satisfyingly. 3.5 stars.
