Loki Redmond is positive her grandfather’s 100 acre farm in Mississippi will be the perfect place for Jake Savior to heal after the murder of his wife and his banishment from law enforcement before they begin their partnership in Redmond Private Investigations.
But fate has other plans.
The discovery of a month old baby and young girl with no memory of her name, running from a man she calls The Devil, plunges them into danger. Loki’s Native American connection to the spirits makes her a target for the delusions of a madman who is determined to kill her.
Tension continues to rise when a special unit of the FBI enters the case, and Jake is forced to decide what he believes in. Can he change the future seen by Special Agent Brian Wilkes, or is Loki destined to die?
Loki Redmond is Choctaw Indian with paranormal abilities, she took Jake to her grandfather's farm to heal after his wife's murder. On his nightly walk he finds almost frozen little girl and baby. They were running away from the Devil and his mother. They learned that she was kidnapped and didn't even know her name. Redmond Investigation with the help of FBI and local police had to stop Devil from kidnapping and killing of young girls. Untreated mental illness, animal cruelty, making money from selling babies. Sad story.
THE FORGOTTEN has a little bit of everything ..... people with 'gifts', murder, mental health issues, kidnapping, assault, abuse. It also has some unforgettable characters... Loki Redmond, Choctaw Indian, in love with a man who lost his wife a short time ago. Jake Savior, a man who can no longer be any part of law enforcement. He's still dealing with issues over his wife. He accepts Loki's 'gift' even though he really doesn't believe in it. They have moved to Loki's grandfather's farm shortly after he passed. This is where the hope to open Redmond Private Investigations.
Jake finds the young girl with an infant in the woods... face down in the snow. She's been running from someone she calls Husband and his Mother. She's thirteen years old and has no memory of her own name, but calls the baby Hope. She says they will kill her and her baby if he finds them.
Things really heat up with the arrival of the FBI. Not only the FBI, but a special FBI team who all have some sort of paranormal gift. Jake is going to have to either believe in the future that is predicted by Special Agent Wilkes ... or is Loki destined to die?
This is a very impressive novel filled with vivid descriptions of the Mississippi region. It's very well written with twists and turns along the way .. leading to a surprising ending. The characters all seem to have one issue or another, but they're all solid and a lot stronger than they believe. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
Next book in this series is INNOCENT BLOOD which will be available Oct 12, 2017.
Thrilling story of a young woman freeing herself and infant daughter and the the Investigators who work the case
I loved the second book in this series, and since I read that first, of course I needed to read the beginning. This story introduces us to the family of Choctaw Indians who run Redmond Investigations. Loki, the oldest who has the ability to speak with spirits, and her brothers , who also have paranormal abilities. There is love, fear, bravery and more all with people involved in investigating a very bad man and his crazy mother. I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful bunch, and the good work they are able to do. I like real stories, no sci-fi , but the spirits who 'help' in here are woven carefully into the people who work with them, and this enhances the story . A great start to a clever series, as you are kept on the edge of your seat until the very end.
This is the first book in a new series featuring Loki and Jake. If you are a fan of this authors books you will recognise some characters from the Jenna James series which I think this is a spin off series. It isn’t essential to have read this other series though as the author does well to give enough background without feeling like you have missed out on anything.
Loki I loved, she is strong yet sensitive. She has a super natural power that connects her to the spirit world. Where as some may think that this is a gift I think at times for Lori it is a burden.
Jake is the strong but silent type. He has been through a lot and is struggling with his feelings for Loki. He also struggles with Loki’s powers. The pair obviously like each other but they seem afraid to let each other in.
Grace the young girl whose found really touched my heart. She has been through so much yet is determined to protect her baby Hope.
The Forgotten is a great start to a brand new series. It has great characters with a very sick and twisted baddie. It’s very much a story of a race against time with good versus evil. The build up towards the end was literally electrifying. Can not wait to read more!
My thanks to Bloodhound Books for a copy of the book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
I've never read any of this authors books before. When I got the opportunity from Bloodhound books to receive an early copy, just how could I say no to that enticing book cover, then the description pulled me in further.
I really like this authors style of writing, it's crisp, spot on and a good snappy read with lots of action that your mind doesn't wander once.
Loki has built her home in her late Grandfathers property. 100 acre farm.
She's taken Jake in to heal and recover after the death of his wife. We know early on how Loki feels about Jake. You can feel her emotions through the pages coming out at you. But does he feel the same?
They form a Partnership after Jake is banished from his job.
One day Jake comes across a young girl and a baby in the forest. She's running away from the devil. But who or what is the devil?
It's a really good plot. You have to stay with it, it's very hard to put the book down as it finishes on one chapter only to lead you smack bang into another so....you keep saying " just one more chapter" and end up reading it all.
I so enjoyed this read. I'm definitely going to read more by this author.
It is no secret to the fact that I am a massive fan of Linda Prather’s books and The Forgotten is another reason why.....It is just BRILLIANT!!!
The Forgotten has some of my favourite characters from the Jenna James legal thriller series and it was great to catch up with Jake and Loki again.
As in all of this author’s books, it is fast paced, thrilling and with some really despicable baddies.
Along with the help of FBI Special Agent Brian Wilkes and his team, Jake and Loki are on the hunt for The Devil, a particularly evil madman who has made Loki and her rescue dog Bruiser his next target.
Fantastic and realistic characters, The Forgotten is an edge of your seat thriller with so much suspense that I could not put it down, but also did not want it to end. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series ...... hope the wait is not too long.
A massive 5* and do not miss out on this one, you won’t be disappointed.
This is the first book I've read by Prather and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I became involved in the story immediately as I felt sympathy for one character and wanted to do serious harm to two others!
I really liked the mix of characters - both the good and bad. The antagonists were, to use a typically English expression, completely cuckoo (crazy.) The protagonists were what gave the story it's unique feature and added a supernatural edge.
Grace and Bruiser were the heroes of the book. Both having been through so much, still wanted to apprehend 'Husband' and save their friends. I may also have a soft spot for fictional dogs I wish I owned.
I'll be reading the next book the this series (Innocent Blood ) very soon.
When I received Linda's author newsletter and saw that she was offering readers a chance to appear in her latest book, I jumped at the chance, never thinking I would be lucky enough to be picked. When I received a message to say I'd been chosen, I was delighted.
Loki Redmond has set up home at her grandfather's Mississippi farm along with Jake Savior, her new business partner in Redmond Private Investigations, while he grieves for his murdered wife. When a young girl and her baby are found out in the forest, apparently running from a man she calls the Devil, Loki and Jake find themselves pulled into the case of a serial killer. The FBI are brought in to oversee the case when they realise more people's lives are in danger and Loki is one of them.
This story pulled me straight in from the first page and I didn't want to put it down, and I actually felt that I was right there in the book playing my part. Linda's writing skills are incredible and she kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book, going through the rollercoaster of emotions that enveloped every character.
I look forward to reading more in this series and will post my review on Goodreads, Amazon UK & US and Twitter. A very easy 5 stars from me.
I absolutely loved everything about this book from the characters to the paranormal aspect, but most of all I loved the twisted and crazy killer. Can't wait for the next in the series. Well done Linda.
This is my first book by Linda Prather. I know, i know, don't all shout at me at once. I can't believe i haven't picked up any before now. I find myself saying this a lot lately, it makes me wonder what i actually did read before.
Back to this one. It is unique in it's very essence
as it combines two of my absolute favourite genres, crime and paranormal. Upon seeing this, i couldn't quite work out how that could be made possible and still be believable. Well, i needn't have worried as Linda does this exceptionally well.
For me, it wasn't just the type of story that was unusual but also the setting. Set in the heart of America, taking us back to the native Chocktaw indian territory with Loki and Jake. Loki is a Chocktaw indian with the gift of sensing spirits, seeing auras that sort of thing. Jake Savior is an ex policeman with a dark and upsetting past. Seeing and believing only those things that are solid and logical. He doesn't really have time for Lokis gift, regardless of his feelings towards her.
Whilst taking a spot of time out after suffering a personal tragedy, Jake Savior is walking in the woods near the homestead of Lokis' late grandfather, in Mississippi. He stumbles across a young girl and a baby. It's freezing cold, the girl is barely alive, Jake immediately takes her to safety. His instincts telling him that if the girl is there, in the middle of nowhere, there is going to be a bad reason as to why.
The FBI send out a small team led by Special Agent Brian Wilkes to help in the search for the man the girl was running from. The man she called The Devil.
The cast of characters is very well written. With the author giving you a back story for each one, so you start to understand more about them and why they are who they have become. I had a particular soft spot for the little girl who calls herself Grace. Grace is a resilient little girl, and if i'm honest, I'm not sure i'd have survived in the same position. I also liked meeting Dadron and Jules. Lokis' brothers. Extremely dependable and likeable people who i'd like on the end of a phone myself.
Loki is a wonderful personality. An extremely strong woman who is not afraid to stand up to the establishment and use her gifts as she sees fit.
Jake Savior. A strong quiet man, with a dark past that continues to haunt him to this day.
I really am excited about this whole series. I'm so looking forward to reading more from these two and see them develop as people and as a team.
Story is fast paced. Characters are likable. There's a book 2 that will be added to my TBR list. There's child abuse which might be a trigger subject. However it's not specifically detailed. Also something I don't come across very often is that mostly all the characters had at least one chapter in their POV and there were several characters at least 7 different POV, sometimes a little confusing but you knew which one it was.
If you're new to Linda Prather's work you're in for a real treat. There are twists and turns aplenty in this one. I love the way The Forgotten brings together so many familiar faces from Linda's other series, namely her Catherine Man's FBI series and the Jenna James legal thriller series.
Jake Savior has recently lost his wife, his friend Loki suggests he gets away for a while to heal on her grandfather's farm in Mississippi. But fate intervenes in a big way.
While out in the surrounding woods one day they stumble across a young girl with a month old baby. She's scared and vulnerable and trying to escape from a man she refers to as The Devil.
The FBI team, headed by Special Agent Brian Wilkes, join in the hunt fro The Devil but can they find him before the team's lives are put in jeopardy.
This is a fast paced mystery with a paranormal edge and a definite must read from me.
I often receive newsletters from Authors and when I received one from Linda Prather offering a chance for one of her readers to appear in her latest book, I applied and was lucky enough to be chosen.
This book has some characters from her other books which I have come to know and love so when I saw that Jake and especially Loki were appearing, I was overjoyed.
Jake has recently lost his wife and his friend Loki suggests he comes and stays with her on her Grandfathers farm to help him with his grief. While out in the woods one day he comes across a young girl with a small baby who are both hungry and cold. It transpires she has escaped and is terrified of someone who she calls "The Devil", who has also decided to set his sights on Loki too. Will they find this madman before it's too late?
The Forgotten is a fast paced thriller with a paranormal edge to it which I loved. The characters are believable and it's well written which meant I could not put it down and have actually read it twice! I have read other books by this Author and have really enjoyed them but I think this is Linda Prather at her best. Thank you to the Author for letting me be a part of it.
Linda has written a story that has great atmosphere, and the setting is perfect, I had a real connection with Loki's grandfathers farmhouse and surrounding area. Loki uses her skills as a "Choctaw Indian" and uses her sense of spirit to help guide her when Jake comes across a body of a teenage mum. The suspense was well paced and I was extremely interested in Loki's character. Although she is very determined and strong, she wasn't made to be too brittle. Her upbringing and "Choctaw" insights brought a paranormal element to the book, but this was an extremely believable side to her character. Turning into her inner self was such interesting reading. Throw in Jake, being pragmatic and there skills were off set well. A very clever story within a great setting. Linda encapsulates this so well. It was very difficult to put this book down once started, this is an offset series from Linda's Jenna James books, but can easily be read as a standalone. I am looking forward to reading more from these characters.
Loved this book, so much so I'd finished it within hours of it being downloaded onto my kindle. This book has everything, lots of twists and turns, paranormal elements, love, evil- the lot! Enjoyed mentions of other characters from previous books and looking forward to reading more about Loki, Jake, Grace and Hope. A great 5* from me.
Hooked from the very beginning, The Forgotten was great read. Although it was at times disturbing due to nature of the crimes, the storyline propelled me to see how it unfolds. I would recommend for anyone who loves thrillers.
I was very pleased to receive an advance copy of this book from Bloodhound Books, whose output is very varied and always interesting. Linda S Prather is a new writer to me and this is the first in a series featuring Loki Redmond and Jake Savior, the former a private investigator and the latter an ex cop, and their relationship is one of several intriguing aspects of the book. When they come across a young girl and her baby in the wild, they become involved in the search for a serial abductor and murderer and his Mother, a case which necessitates them working alongside the FBI. Although very enjoyable I found that the psychic and paranormal aspects of the book stretched my credulity somewhat!
The Forgotten begins with Jake and Loki as the main characters taken from the Jenna James series. You will be rooting for them in so many situations it might make your head spin. Add to that, characters from the Catherine Man series are added to the mix. Beware, don't go to the doctor and read before having your blood pressure taken. There isn't much time for these folks to let you have time to breathe before there is another twist and turn. Linda Prather has a hit on her hands and I am looking forward to hearing more about each and every character that makes it through till the end. You don't know...do you? Read it and find out!
All I can say is wow. I finished this wonderful novel earlier today and it took some time for my breathing to slow back down and my heart rate to return to normal! I read it in 3 days - but it would have been quicker if I'd been able to load it to my kindle straight away - I couldn't put it down.
I loved the characters of Loki and Jake, and I'm hoping there will be a sequel. I wont say too much for fear of spoilers but suffice it to say if you like a murder mystery, a good romance, strong characters, a bit of paranormal, and some twists and turns, you will adore this book - I did.
OUTSTANDING !!!! Wow what a fantastic read its the BEST book I've read of Linda Prather it truly is OUTSTANDING ..... The story blow me away I couldn't put it down the more I read the better it got. This book will be hard to beat..... Linda Prather at her best.... If I could give more than 5 stars I would .....
A jumbled mess of law enforcement , FBI - all apparently with traumatic past histories .Their beliefs in spirit influential in the hunt for serial killers plays a large part in the storyline .None of the love interests trusts each other ,strong women are regarded as "headstrong" .Lots of people are maimed or killed as the flawed goodies make attempts to catch the killers.Dire.
Absolute cracker of a book, it starts off with Loki Redmond taking her friend Jake to her grandfathers farm to recuperate after the death of his wife, she thinks it will be ideal for him. Unfortunately this is not going to happen, once they come across a young girl with a baby trying to escape the clutch of a murderer, paedophile and his mother. I loved this book, characters from the authors other books actually appear in this one, so I knew what I would like to read next! A great fast paced, what's going to happen next? type of book, with a hint of the paranormal in there too.
What a fabulous story this is. Great characters and brilliantly written, I loved the paranormal element in particular. Looking forward to the next book.
Wow what a tremendous start for a new series and a new author to me. How have I never read any of her books because she certainly gave me the perfect combination of my favourite elements for my ultimate reading pleasure. The ability of being able to connect in so many different ways with the dead, the morbid discovery of murdered victims and of course the raging lunacy of a pair demented psychopathic killers. I was ready to drool with anticipation, Homer Simpson would have been envious of me Jake is still recovering from the horrific murder of his wife when his friend Loki and soon to be business partner for Redmond Private Investigations, suggests a get away and recharge of batteries at her grandfathers 100 acre farm in Mississippi. Unfortunately it soon turns into a 'bus mans holiday' for the pair when Jake finds a young teenager with a baby running from 'the devil'. Far worse is to be discovered and soon the FBI are to be involved. Talk about never a dull moment! Linda Prather rocked the core of my being with this gruesome story and I just held on to every sentence. This pair of killers are two of the most frightening that I have read about and I just loved that she invited me into their wrapped minds. I think it was the relationship that they had that made them such a scary pair. When the story was topped off with the super natural elements I was absolutely sold on this book. What a gripping story. I just cringed not wanting any of my already favourite characters to become victims of this pair. Loved this book. The forgotten by Linda Prather. Loki Redmond is positive her grandfather’s 100 acre farm in Mississippi will be the perfect place for Jake Savior to heal after the murder of his wife and his banishment from law enforcement before they begin their partnership in Redmond Private Investigations. An absolutely fantastic read with brilliant characters. I loved the story. I hated Robert. But I loved loki and Jake. I really felt for grace. Full of twists. Highly recommended. 5*. Thanks Linda.
By chapter 3, I had to put this down and go back and research through whatever I could find to see if I had somehow missed the fact that this was actually a book that landed square in the middle of an existing series, but I never found anything that alluded to that being the case. So, that said, I was confused and frustrated because it was written in a way that EVERY character had huge amounts of back story that the reader is never privy to, and there are a ton of characters in this book. So many, that it was at times confusing. In a book that IS in the middle of a series, that fact wouldn’t be an issue, but because this was a standalone, it made it incredibly difficult to understand or connect with the characters.
Outside of my issues with the lack of backstory and info on the characters was the fact that the story just seemed so incredibly unbelievable. I generally love books that bring a paranormal element into the story, but a story that is set in what is apparently a normal world rather than a paranormal one, it was so not believable that so many of the characters had special abilities. I would have even been willing to buy a special division in the FBI having a group, but to then throw in several other characters that just so happened to also have abilities stretched my ability to believe too far, especially when there is no rationale provided for the clustering.
The other big issue I had was with the multitude of weird, random other potential plot lines that didn’t really have anything at all to do with this book. Some of which are really the back story issues and others were just tossed out there with no real impact on the plot of THIS story. There was one with Rosie, one with Jules, one with Jake and Loki, one with Teresa… I think I lost track after a while as it became difficult to determine what was important and what wasn’t. My guess is these are groundwork for more books, but again, I’ve seen no mention of any other books, past or future.
While I just really wasn’t a fan, I think the writing was well done. If this had truly been in a series or connected to other books to where I had the chance to get to the know the characters without them popping up, fully formed in the middle of nothingness, I think I would have been better able to connect with the characters. Same thing with some of the scenarios. If there had been some believable rationale attached that made the situations more believable, I think I would have liked this a whole lot more and is probably the only reason I didn’t give this a straight up didn’t like rating.
On a non-book related note, if you are an author and have a website, you really should have at least one location where you list, oh, I don’t know? The books you have written? Apparently, lack of rationale extends in all directions.
Loki Redmond has taken her friend Jake Saviour to her grandfather’s farm in Mississippi to help him heal following the death of his wife. Their plans to rest and recuperate are thrown into disarray when Jake finds a young girl and a baby lost in the woods. Things take a dark turn when the girl reveals that she is fleeing from a man she calls ‘The Devil’ and his evil mother, and that the baby with her is actually her own child from the years of abuse she has suffered at the hands of this man. When the girl, who calls herself ‘Grace’ after her traumatic experience leads to her forgetting her real name, tells Loki and Jake that there were many more victims before her, they decide to call in the police and it’s not long before a special unit of the FBI gets involved in trying to track down a madman who has kidnapped and murdered young girls for years from all over the country. However the Devil is not far away and, because Loki has seen his face, she is his next target. Due to her ability to connect with the spirits as a result of her Native American heritage, Loki must work with the FBI to try and figure out where the killer is hiding – but he is convinced that he can absorb her power if he murders her and is closing in.
This book certainly wastes no time in getting to the action – from almost the first page the reader is drawn in to the dark and dangerous world that Loki and Jake find themselves caught up in. The stakes are consistently high and not a chapter goes by without a new twist or one of the characters finding themselves in a new dangerous situation. I enjoyed the way the book occasionally switched to chapters that focused on ‘The Devil’, as it meant that the reader gets to see what’s going on from the perspective of the killer, which really upped the tension and also made the book more creepy and unsettling when it described his thought processes and plans. The story was well written and difficult to put down due to the numerous cliffhangers and unsolved mysteries scattered throughout and the setting was very atmospheric and well described.
What lost this book its fifth star was the lack of connection I felt with any of the characters. The author has written multiple previous books featuring the same characters that show up in this story, and as a result they are introduced fairly briefly and not a lot of detail is given about their past or their lives. Unfortunately as a result, I didn’t really feel very worried about their potential fates or empathise with their past traumas, and also occasionally got a little confused between them. For example, at one point a character has a near-miss encounter with the killer and if the reader knew her and her backstory from previous books, this would probably be far more dramatic. This probably would have been different if I had read previous books in the series and knew the characters better and it only marginally lowered the tension in what was already quite an adrenaline rush of a read. The paranormal aspect of the story was also a bit unusual and felt a little out of place, although the author integrated it well enough and to a level that it didn’t feel totally unbelievable.
In conclusion, this was an enjoyable book that fans of crime fiction will probably enjoy. However it never truly struck a chord with me the way that some stories do, when I find myself genuinely scared for the characters and almost nervous to read on and see what happens next. The paranormal element also didn’t really work for me. Nevertheless, this was a good thriller and I regret that I didn’t read it with a bit more background knowledge of the characters, as I imagine this would have hugely increased my enjoyment of the story.

Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of this book to review.
I wanted to enjoy this story and indeed the premise was really promising, but, like another reviewer, I found myself seemingly ‘dumped’ in the middle of a series with a mix of characters who all had huge, complex backstories that were unknown to me. But this is the first in a series so who ARE these people?
There were numerous seemingly unrelated subplots - one involving a kidnapping that had no link with the story at all and was mostly ‘off-page’ and utterly pointless as far as I could tell.
I had the feeling that the author had these characters beautifully worked out complete with intricate back stories that somehow all intermeshed. But, as the reader, I am not privy to the author’s thoughts and so these people remained a mystery.
One really REALLY important thing to note however is this:
Loki says she is going to do a grocery run and makes a list. And she says: “I’ve put some things on here for Grace. Plus some baby aspirin.”
NO. NO!
You do NOT EVER give aspirin to babies - not even to children under the age of 16. And ibuprofen and paracetamol are not suitable for babies under 2 months.
I am rating this one star simply because that warning needs to be absolutely crystal clear.
I’ve really loved this book, having read the 2nd book of this series first I was desperate to read more about Loki Redmond and her family. I must say reading the second book first didn’t make much of a difference to my understanding or anything, both books can be read as stand alone ones but I assure you once you’ve read one you won’t be able to help yourself from reading the other.
I love the plot of ‘The Forgotten’ it really had me on the edge of my seat!! I was afraid for Loki and her family and friends safety as a serial killer is on the loose and although the loki and her private investigator partner have virtually no clues to go on, the bad guy knows exactly who they are.
The forgotten is a really really good read, it’s very well written!! leaving the reader in suspense and hooked right up to the last minute. Plus the characters are all likeable and relatable in their own different ways, even Bruiser their dog is a great character, I just loved reading about them all and getting to know them. I’m soooo hoping there will be a book 3 very soon as I actually cannot wait to read more from the Loki and co, even though i’ve just literally finished the forgotten feel like I need another fix, the Redmonds are a great family and the books leave you wanting more and more I could have read and read these books, I didn’t want them to end.
