His Secret #1

His Dirty Little Secret

Rate this book
Secrets … dirty ones.

He was mine … there was a time … Or so I thought.

Instead, I was simply his dirty little secret.

He couldn’t, no wouldn’t risk telling his best friend – my brother – about us. So, I kept quiet. Blinded by love and bound by my own desires, I allowed it all.

I didn’t tell a single soul about my time with Sawyer, not my brother, not my closest friends.

Not then, and especially not now.

How can I? My best friend is his ex-wife.

The past is the past.

I’m over him.

I refuse to still love him.

He will never own me again.

I repeat the lies over and over again to myself every single day.

Only, deep down, no matter how hard I try to deny it, I’ve always been his.

I want more between us than a dirty little secret.

I wrote a huge ranting review and now it's gone so now I'm even more pissed off!!

Can someone please, please recommend a romance book that I would actually enjoy? All I want is for the hero to be loyal to the heroine and that I actually BELIEVE him when he says that he loves the heroine and always has. Is that really too much to fucking ask???!!!

Awful.

Sawyer is a jerk. Ash is never with anybody but Sawyer while he goes off while she's in danger and sleeps with her best friend and then marries her.

I am so sick of these types of heroes. Even "bad boys" can be honorable. Which Sawyer is not.

I will never understand why heroines can't move on. Why couldn't she marry and have a kid? Then they can get back together. There is that double standard that the man can do whatever he wants but the woman must remain untouched.

Flip all these bad boy stories around and think how a woman who did what these guys do would be treated.

One of the worst stories I’ve read in quite some time.
The heroine was the hero’s dirty little secret, he didn’t want to tell her brother, who was his friend, about them dating, but he expected the heroine to leave her job for him.
She left for an assignment and they broke up, she was severely wounded so she came back later to find him married to her bff and pregnant.
They got divorced some years later.
The heroine basically is the unpaid nanny of their kid, all her life revolves around the kid of betrayal.
The heroine wants her back and it takes him minutes to persuade her, such is her level of weakness.
Doormat level: Pro.
Self esteem level: minus 1000000000
Dignity level: none
Self respect level: none
Second hand embarrassment (mine for her): nuclear.
Second hand shame(always mine for her). : ott
Ow is a good woman, she is the heroine bff and never knew about her affair with the hero, she feels guilty when she finds out, it’s all on the hero.
They never loved each other and the kid was a drunk ONS they both regret.
The hero though is the worst character in this story, he cheated on her just two weeks after she was gone, so not a big loss imo for the heroine.
She should have thanked her lucky star that she never went on with their relationship, he was never worth it. Sadly she’s a worthless and dumb human being, happy because she can be the nanny of that bastard cheater, and of course seven years celibate, let’s not have a heroine who at least try to move on and have some men, some decent one.
While the heroine wants had sex for one year and a half with his wife, the wife he said he never loved but as everyone noticed, he always treated her with the utmost respect and consideration while the heroine was never even worthy of a mention.
And he’s so still caring for his ex wife and he can’t regret that he did what he did either he wouldn’t have his son. The usual big stinky bullshit.
My opinion: FY everyone.

This book is incredibly short for a theme that is so heavy. It needs to be a standalone, at the very least. A long one.

Bottom line. I hate heroines who don't respect herself and I hate Heroes who treat heroine as a second choice and think he could just bat his eyes and have her back.

I mean... he slept with the heroine's best friend for fuck's sake. 2 weeks after the ""broke"" up. Kept as her as a dirty little secret is one thing, but THAT is totally disgusting.

Ugh I wish I had never picked up this mess of a book. Sorry not sorry.

8/2/24 Update and probably a few more, I seriously got pissed, lol.

You know what? She did a revision and made it worse. But now it's rage read. Also, the heroine is a doormat of epic proportions and he's still a dick. She took out the bit that the reason he got her best friend pregnant was that they thought she was dead, it was the only thing that I thought was a good reason for the pregnancy, bc it was a "secret romance" and her friend didn't know about it. Gah, now I'm pissed and think she's nuts for taking him back. I'm really pissed! Great stuff.

Sorry for the run on sentences, lol.

I keep editing!! With stupid exclamation points!!! My English prof told me if I used one more exclamation point in my paper he was going to commit me, bc only crazy people got so excited that they need to shout at the end of a sentence 55 times in one English assignment. You know, bc exclamation points denote raising your voice and/or shouting in the written word. He was a real dick, seriously. Anywho, how did I go down that stupid memory lane? Ok, it's bit anticlimactic now, but I hate it when heroines forgive all bc of a big schlong that makes her panties wet. I'm just shaking my head write now. This could've been amazing if the author had made it realistic. She was great with getting us to feel her emotions only to then pee on those emotions by making the h be a sex starved moron who only had ever had sex with the "Hero". Now him? He'd had a few. How does that make him a man? Just means he knows where his genitalia is. OMG, this author really got my panties in a twist and not in a good way, when she took out that they thought the heroine was dead, thus the drunken comfort each other one night stand. I thought that was so good, finally a real reason for a stupid action. Ok, rant over. Maybe. I'll probably think of something else and start in again.

This is my 3rd read so going to 5 stars, getting desperate for a good cheater/betrayal read. I think this. booked could've been good if it had been full length and we had more conflict with Amber. Also, I missed a line in this book that acknowledges the baby was a mistake, a mistake that hurt her and ruined their "romance". He loved his son, wouldn't have changed it but is remorseful. Unfortunately with this type of trope it really takes a lot of growth for the H to be redeemed and theres just not enough page time with this novella. She stopped writing these bc of all the flack about a "bad" hero, so don't expect any revision. What a shame, she's a fairly good writer.

I still think if you read a book that you know you don't like and then leave a review bc you didn't like it means your granny panties are showing and you got skid marks. They stink, too. Either that or you lack reading comprehension skills.....................

“What do you want me to say?” Sawyer muttered in a defeated tone. “I regret it, Ash. With everything in me, I regret what happened with Amber. But what followed?” He shook his head despairingly, defeat and pain twisting his beautifully masculine face. “How can I regret the results? How can you? Jamie wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my mistake. Not even for you could I regret my son.”

Excerpt From: Terri Anne Browning. “His Dirty Little Secret.” iBooks.

This line (or its iteration) has been written so many times in books where the H has been unfaithful or "indiscreet" that it just makes me roll my eyes. It's like my husband looking at a waitress, having sex with her and then giving me the baby and saying in a melodramatic voice "how can I regret life, how could you want me to?" his voice quivering softly . Uh, well........if you kept your dick in your pants, it would be a completely hypothetical question. Snort. I love angsty, cheaty books, but with this ONE question it's ruined bc authors are trying to justify and excuse instead of H owning his bad behavior, growing and apologizing.

Update 8/23 I 4 starred bc I love this trope, lol, but I still stand by the review. That line is hideous.

I have read this once already, but have forgotten it mostly, so am skimming this to see if it is as bad as I rated. So far I am constantly rolling my eyes, but if I am honest I didn’t enjoy this authors ‘The Rocker’ series. So far things that are bothering me are Ash not wearing a coat or having an umbrella, then proceeding to get Ill in the Space of like 30 mins, not realistic. I have already been told Amber and Ash are like sisters, so how is anyone supposed to believe that Amber knew nothing about the feelings Ash had for Sawyer? Also I am at a loss as to why Everyone likes Amber so much, she is already getting re married, so far she is pushy, nosy and annoying. Also, ex’s being friends when they have a child together is great, but asking your ex to walk ya down the aisle? When you know your fiancée is not a fan? Get a grip! Also, I don’t get why Ash and Sawyer keep going on about Leo pulling his head out of his ass? He and Amber have been together two years which is a normal amount of time to wait to propose, the way they are going on it’s as if they have been together decades! Also sorry but Amber needs to a bit more involved, she is one of those pretty girls who is so fake sweet and wholesome, but not really concerned about anyone else’s feelings but her own. For example she had no idea about Ash’s felons for Sawyer? She also still asked Sawyer to walk her down the aisle when she knew it annoyed her fiancée, and also she may have been a decent mum, but she could have been more I locked. It’s great she was a hard worker, but having your best friend babysit your son every day is a lot. Also, holidays away from your children are healthy, but seeing as she works most of the time and her husband has joint custody, it seemed a lot when she then had a two week vacation away from her son? She seemed like a perfect mum because she was basically a part time mum in this book. She is not the only one, apparently Sawyer is a workaholic who has never missed a day of work in 10 years, even for his honeymoon! What a treat, but what I found ridiculous is the first time he ever took a day off work was related to getting Ash back! Sorry but priorities! His first day off work should be concerning taking his son out or going away for a trip with him! He does not have him everyday, yet he worries more about getting Ash. I felt both Sawyer and Amber loved Jamie, but he was not their priority. Ash seemed to make more changes to her life than anyone:
‘ I had two bedrooms. When Jamie had been born and I had started babysitting him so much, I had turned my guest room into a nursery. The crib was gone now, replaced with a full-sized bed with black and red sheets and matching comforter. The room screamed Jamie’s personality from the toys that were practically spilling out of the toy chest in one corner to the pictures he had drawn and I had placed in picture frames around the entire room.’
Also I do not know many barely five years olds that talk like Jamie, for example when a client who is after Sawyer comes to his office, Jamie tells her:
“My father is in his office, but he doesn’t have time for your kind of crazy, lady,” he informed her in a tone dripping with all the contempt this woman had just shown me, and oozing with an attitude I had no one else to blame for but myself.’
Seriously? As if, also Ash speaks to the women like this on front of Jamie:
She lost her smile, making her look older and not nearly as pretty as she tried so hard to look. “You’re not a very nice little boy.” “And you’re a bitch,” I told her before Jamie could open his mouth. “He still wins.”
The woman was a nut but this is not ok. Ash is really not that likeable,
For someone so lovely and weak when it comes to people close hitting her, she is pretty harsh in her judgments.
Also, Ash is this feisty blunt person, but she lets Sawyer and Amber get away with everything, constantly babysits (does she have no life), and ends up taking Sawyer back even though he is an ass!
To top off this shit show, the heroine was obviously a Virgin who have her virginity to the hero, and she was of course celibate the whole six years they were separated! (Apparently this was a 1970s Mills & Boon book and I did not realise). So many contradictions and silly stuff in this book. This to me is not love or romance.

Reread that unfortunately didn’t get any better.

In a nutshell, Sawyer and Ash had a short but intense relationship that he wanted to keep on the DL because her big overprotective bro is his best bud and business partner. The two had an argument where she ended things in a huff and went on a business trip, stuff happened and what should’ve lasted a week lasted much longer. Months later Ash returned ready to reconcile (having almost died unbeknownst to everyone) and learned that Sawyer had married her BFF Amber and that they were expecting a child.

There’re a few main problems with the book other than it being too short to do the plot justice. 1️⃣ The book starts YEARS AFTER the betrayal skipping over all the heartbreak and yummy angst. What is the point of having her suffer having her heart ripped out and the DEVASTATION of her great love marrying her BFF if we don’t experience it? 2️⃣ It’s never explained why Sawyer felt he needed to marry Amber. It was a drunken ONS. They both apparently loved /or in Amber’s case was attracted to other people, it didn’t really sound like they put much effort into making a real marriage, and it wasn’t 1906. Most importantly he knew it would DESTROY Ash, the woman he desperately was in love with. He could’ve easily co-parented with her as friends like he did for most of their marriage and had since their divorce. It was a huge plot hole. 3️⃣ If he has been thinking of Ash everyday for 6 years because “his soul cries for her because she’s his soulmate” … what’s he been doing the last two years? Has he been trying to get with her? It was very loosely explained that he only had two weeks to woo her before Amber returned, but it sounded like Amber wasn’t the most hands-on mother and wasn’t always around. Also, why wait?

There is groveling via action but not a ton with words because of the whole how can I regret what happened because I wouldn’t have my son excuse. And can I just say, I HATE this plot device. Sure, you can’t regret a kid, but does that have to negate the action? What if his action changed the future and their potential kid wasn’t born instead of Jamie because they weren’t together? It’s a copout and robs the h of her justice.

Bottom Line- This had the recipe to be delicious, but it was executed in a way that robbed us out of any real drama, feels, or angst.

Safety-

Random- I’ve been asked. I don’t think Ash was second choice or second best. I think Sawyer was dumb, and I don’t understand why he married Amber, but I don’t think he would ever put her before Ash. He actually said at one point Ash was equally as important as his son. Also, he [MAJOR SPOILER]

NOPE, JUST NOPE.
how the hell is this supposed to be a love story?
how the heck could he come back to her after getting her bff pregnant & married ?
and then after 6 years and (a kid with her bff and divorced) wants Ash back. NO NO NO!!!!
just bye lol.

(i could understand maybe if he had one night stand with her bff , but, to get her accidentally pregnant and then marry her? without even letting his wife know he was 2 months with Ash?? ) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!. Disgusting. Sick.

Just gross. Literally how desperate do you have to be to stay celibate for 6 years for a man who knocks up your bff, while you were away on a trip for a month? Oh and then married said bff and continues to fuck her for 6 years. The bar is in literal hell, to call this dumpster fire romance. Hell no.

Seriously?

This book has so much potential but I feel like the author wrote this while just playing around and got bored one day

There are so many gaps that need to be filled and questions to be answered it's not even funny. Had I known that this was only a short story I probably wouldn't have wasted my time.

How do you expect to write a story, have the heroine have a traumatic accident, but not say what said accident was or how it affected her?! I feel like this was written for us to come up with our own version of the story and if that's the case then I didn't need to spend an afternoon on this. I'm so disappointed with this as a whole because like I said, this has so much potential to be an amazing book but what I read fell flat.

This book was far fetched.. Ash and Sawyer have a torrid secret affair for two months. Sawyer doesn’t want to tell her brother for the same old reason as every other book— they are best friends … authors need to think up a new plot device. Anyway Ash is a war correspondent— they fight about her job because he is worried. The part in anger— but did they really break up??? Ash leaves for two weeks and gets almost murdered. When she returns home her bff Amber is pregnant and married to Sawyer… meanwhile Ash had her throat slit overseas. Charming… so 6 years later and 2 year post divorce Sawyer wants Ash back. The reader is supposed to be a dumb fck and believe that Amber her lifelong bff never knew that
Ash was in love with Sawyer… meanwhile Ash is so
Close to Amber that she functions as a second mother to her and Sawyers son. Believe it or not this book got boring in places. I don’t think there was enough time for the angsty potential to be developed.. and then the cheating excuse was lame. Sawyer and OW Amber should have been used for more angst. Instead it’s just told that Amber never knew the H and h were in love. So Ambets part was just brushed under the rug. Sawyer said he was drunk so brush that under the rug too… fizzle fizzle… boring! If you’re gonna use this plot then take a lesson from Jerry Springer and give me all the drama!

What's with this heroine? Sawyer is a jerk and she still accepted him? A jerk who sleeps with his "ex girlfriend's" best friend after two weeks of breaking up.

They did not love each other. It's lust. If Sawyer loved and respected her in the first place he should not have kept her as his dirty little secret. WHY KEEP YOUR RELATIONSHIP SECRET JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO BE RUSHED INTO MARRIAGE? And not because you just knocked someone up means that you should marry her. You even mentioned THEY DID NOT LOVE EACH OTHER. Why marry if they will just divorce? They can raise their son without getting married just what happened after they divorced.

Ash always talks about getting her pussy wet just because of the things Sawyer do. ITS NOT LOVE. Why is this heroine seemed so push over? She didn't even show resistance against Sawyer. Her character makes me sick.

And what's with Ash obsession with Amber and Sawyer's son. It impossible. Very impossible. Yes you can forgive and move on but still being "super" close to all of those who hurt you? That's impossible. YOU CAN FORGIVE BUT YOU CAN NEVER FORGET AND BEING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO HURT YOU EVERY SINGLE DAY OF YOUR LIFE WILL JUST MAKE YOU REMEMBER ALL OF WHAT HAPPENED.

THIS STORY IS FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE.

Sweet 2nd Chance Romance Novella

This was a entertaining and sweet novella with the following tropes:
💋 Second Chance Romance
💋 Brothers Best friend
💋 Secret / hidden relationship
💋 Unrequited Love
💋 Baby with Other Woman
💄 Duel perspective 1st person pov

The fmc was in love with her brothers best friend for a long time and they had a relationship ( she was s virgin) for a few months in her 20s. She was in top of the world until it all crashed down on her. Then he gave her an ultimatum to quit her job

She gave him an ultimatum..stop keeping their relationship secret and she would quit her job. He didnt..she went on assignment to a dangerous area and was injured. When she was in the hospital she found out her eas marrying her best friend and the ow was pregnant.

For 6 years Ash was a babysitter to her bf and exes child but avoids talking to him..until one day the mmc pulls his head from his ass and decides to ask for a second chance. The big question is will she give him a second chance?

I was anticipating all sorts of yummy goodness this sounded so angsty. The 2nd chance kicked to curb for OW trope makes me rub my hands in glee. I think It's the hardest thing in a romance, to redeem the H and for us to believe the h isn't an after thought. Unfortunately my glee didn't last long.

The 'plot' was too weighty to be tackled as a novella and there were lots of questions left unanswered leading to dissatisfaction. What happened to her on her last assignment? Why did no one but Dominic know about it properly? What kind of marriage did the bff and the H have, surely more than the 'arrangement' the book refers to at one time? By all accounts they married because of the pregnancy but really, at the end it was a marriage. I was also left with a distinct feeling of uneasiness when such close friendships and relationships were based on a lack of truth. It smacked of betrayal at some level. And godmother/godson close relationship I get, but to the extent she seemed like a third parent. Didn't sound healthy to me. The h was a complete doormat, and the H, well he took his bloody time trying to get her back as the marriage had ended a few years back. But he was a genius, he seemed to think that flowers and smooching would do the trick. Well guess what, it did!

I kinda lost interest.. don't get me wrong, first few chapters was good but for some reason I didn't want to pick it back up! I might read it later on, so I'm putting this as my dnf for now. It has an interesting concept, I love reading angst with some dumb characters.. it makes the reading more painful but enjoyable at the same time. LOL

This book is not for everyone, its a lil taboo and even I who likes trainwreck/taboo/cheating/stupid characters was cringing. I stop somewhere not because I was uncomfortable.. I just got bored half way through and felt like I kinda know the ending already. Oh well, maybe next time I'll continue it.. but for now DNF

My rating: 3 stars

What I liked: I liked the son and how Ash(h) had a great relationship with him even though he was the son of the guy who broke her hurt.

What I didn’t like: To me the book was too short. I wanted Sawyer(H) to work more for Ash’s forgiveness. Also, why did it have to be with the best friend and why did he have to marry her just because she got pregnant???

How hot was it: 3 out 5

Triggers/Details:In the past the H and h were secretly dating when she is asked to do an assignment for work. H doesn’t want her to and h tells him if he tells her brother that they are dating she won’t go. He doesn’t, they fight and she leaves for the assignment. h gets hurt and is gone longer dealing with her injuries and PTSD. H, just two weeks after h leaves, gets drunk and has sex with h’s best friend. h’s best friend gets pregnant and the H marries her (best friend did not know that the h was secretly dating the H or that the h was in love with the H). h comes home and finds out and refuses to talk to the H. Later, the H and best friend divorce. This book starts at the 6 years later part where the H decides he is ready to win the h back. h had no other sexual partners and the H has not had sex in 4 1/2 years. Later in the book it is suggested that the H and best friend didn’t have a normal marriage. H tells h he wants her back, finally tells her brother everything and they get their HEA.

Final thoughts: This would have been better if it was longer so we could of gotten more. The H screwed up and needed to grovel a lot more. Everything wrapped up too quickly for me :/

Uhhhh okay. There was very little problem with this book. The heroine's career sounded so cool!! Did we hear anything about or her near-death experience? Nope. Just this boring hero who asked her to give up her career for him! Jeez thanks. And everyone was completely fine that they got together....so their original break up was for nothing. Wonderful. Skip it.

My only complaint, is that this was just too short! The story was told well but I love reading Terri's books so I always want them to be longer. I think Terri set this up for a series and if not she defiantly has enough unanswered questions about the characters to do so. Maybe we will find out what happened to Ash and how Dom had to fix her.

Let me start by saying this is probably not the book for you sensitive ass safety people. With that out of the way I loved this novella. My stomach was in knots for Ash the whole time. I'm way more petty so I'd have made Sawyer and Ashley suffer enough for a full length novel. The only thing I would've liked is more details on Ash's traumatic experience when she was on assignment. And there should've been a sympathy f*ck between her and Dom, that would've been awesome.

This narration was absolutely fantastic. Carly Robins doing that child's voice had me feeling a I was listening to a child for real. I'm wondering how this is my first Jacob Morgan book and planning to make time to listen to his voice some more. My only issue with my enjoyment of the audiobook is the story. Ash was completely blindsided by her friend marrying the man she just had a relationship with. I just feel like Sawyer should have told Ash privately and told the friend about their history. Way to put that guilt on said friend 6 years later. Then Sawyer was jealous over the possibility Ash was with other men (she wasn't sadly) when HE WAS LITERALLY MARRIED TO HER BEST FRIEND! He wants it all and doesn't deserve it. The cherry on top of my anti-Sawyer cake is when he proposes to Ash at her friends dream wedding, the wedding she didn't get when she married Sawyer at the courthouse. I don't care whose idea it was. It shouldn't have happened. The narration definitely played a large role in my enjoyment of this story.

This author is one of my favorites, so I'm surprised that I'm giving such a bad review. I felt like this story was just hurriedly written. She didn't go into details on a few things that just left you going. Well what happened?? Back stories were left unexplained and I hate that. That's why I only gave two stars. I still love this author. I hope her next book is better
