New York Times Bestselling Author Shelley Shepard Gray gifts us with a special Christmas story about love and blessings in this next book in her Amish of Hart County series.

The Schwartz family is happy to be spending Christmas on their new farm in Hart County. But when Susanna Schwartz hears gunshots that causes her buggy to overturn, and then her little sister falls through a wooden bridge into the icy creek, it becomes clear from these dangerous “accidents” that someone wants them gone.

Neil Vance has been heartbroken ever since his parents lost their family farm. He knows it’s not the Schwartz family’s fault, but he can’t help but be resentful. Until he meets Susanna. She is kind-hearted and bold, and Neil can’t stop thinking about her pretty green eyes.

Neil thinks the accidents are just that, but Susanna’s father is convinced the Vance family is responsible. Susanna refuses to believe Neil would do anything to harm her. She’s fallen in love with him and knows he is a good man. But her family is ready to pack up and move, and time is running out to uncover the truth before someone gets hurt…or worse.

Reading a Shelley Shepard Gray book is like a glorious homecoming. There's comfort and familiarity paired with the unexpected of a new story. The thrill of discovery spikes my anticipation and once I start reading I can't stop until I reach the end. Which is exactly what happened with The Gift. Consumed in one sitting followed by the letdown of having finished far too soon.

The suspense is subtle -- a series of unexpected accidents that no one wants to take seriously except for Susanna and her sisters. And they are already adjusting to a difficult transition to their new home in Hart County. Unearthing the reason behind the surprising hostility the Amish community harbors against them is just the beginning of the mystery.

Neil and Susanna's friendship gets off to a rocky start. It's Neil who has to dig deep and reflect on the emotions that fuel his anger and ultimately his behavior. It's a powerful awakening that brings depth to the story. There's also a surprise (and very sweet) secondary romance All woven into a suspenseful plot that kept me turning pages.

Amish + Suspense + Christmas = a dream of a read!

The author has created a page tuner here, and I couldn’t put it down, quickly became involved and wondered who was doing the evil acts. Yes, I guessed and guessed wrong, but you will be doing the same with this non-stop action in Amish country, and first impressions are not always right!
I loved being back in Hart County and being updated on past friends, and love has survived! This is a new group, but they are now part of the family, and this story is going to linger with you for a long time.
Be ready for you heart in your throat right from the first few pages, shots being fired at you as you drive your buggy down the road, and then right to the end with your falling into a cave, will all survive?
You don’t want to miss this one, Amish and adventure, family and love of God, so many accidents, or are they?

This is book 3 in The Hart of Amish County.
It's the perfect book for this time of year. You get the best of both worlds in this one book Amish and Christmas.
Romance, a little bit of a mystery, and Amish living. You can't go wrong.
Now about the mystery, I can't wait for you readers to let me know what you think about who was behind all of these accidents.
Gray, has out done herself on this series. Now this can be read as a stand alone but I really recommend the whole series. It's her best series to date. You won't be sorry.
I gave this book 5 stars. I HIGHLY recommend it.

I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s suspense books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s Amish books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s Kentucky books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s Christmas books. So when a new Shelley Shepard Gray book releases & it’s an Amish suspense novel set in Kentucky at Christmas? Ssshhh… don’t bother me while I’m reading!

I loved Susanna and Neil – together and separately. They are both fantastic characters and they have great chemistry together. I also really loved the secondary romance subplot playing out in this story! The suspense is well-plotted and you will find yourself cautiously peering around corners as things go from bad to worse for Susanna’s family. There’s a bit of predictability, sure, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyability of the novel.

Shelley Shepard Gray writes with a delightful blend of warmth and grace, with just the right amount of sass thrown in for good measure. You sit down to read a chapter and, before you know it, you’ve finished the whole thing because it’s so charming! The Gift is the same way. It’s a quick read but you’ll find yourself wrapped up in the words like a soft comforting blanket.

Bottom Line: The Gift by Shelley Shepard Gray is Christmasy and cozy and comforting… uhhhh there’s just the little matter of someone wanting to harm Susanna and her family. Humor, heart, and faith join forces with danger and suspense – and the magic of the season – to bring you the perfect read for these colder nights!

The Gift was a great way to jump into some holiday reading, peppered with a bit of mystery and danger. It is part of a series set in Hart County, however, is definitely readable as a stand alone novel.

The main characters, Susanna and Neil, get off to a very rocky start. I really liked Susanna and felt so sorry for the way she and her family were being treated. I also felt for Neil, even though I was frustrated with him early on in the story. I appreciated the way the author showed his emotional growth as the book progressed. It wasn’t immediate and it was something he had to work on, yet he did realize the error of his ways and worked to make things right..

I enjoyed the two seperate romances that developed and that there were viewpoints from the characters who were involved in these relationships. It gave a well rounded feel to the story. The hint of danger and uncertainty kept me turning the pages to see if my suspicion about who was behind the the mayhem was correct.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

The Schwartz family’s dream of owning their own farm soon becomes a nightmare. Moving to a new Amish community, instead of the fellowship they expected, they are met with open hostility. The farm they purchased at a bargain price was available only because the family who had owed it had to sell because of the debts the father had incurred. This led to some animosity among some of their community towards the new owner. But when bad things start happening against the Schwartz family, the eldest son of the old owner and the eldest daughter of new one, form a friendship and bond over their desire to discover who is responsible for the acts of violence. This tale has suspense and romance, and as new relationships develop, the reason for the title soon becomes evident.

". . . out of the darkness had come the light. In all of its blinding goodness."

When you read a title like "The Gift," what did you expect? I for one expected something tangible, and granted there could be depending on how you read into it. However, I should've known Shelley Shepard Gray would exceed expectations. In her latest story, the third book in the Amish of Hart County series, The Gift represented so much more.

". . . you raised me to respect others, have faith in Jesus, and practice forgiveness toward others . . ."
"The Lord was showing her that light could shine in almost every corner of the world. "

A story about jealousy, pride, resentment, fear and ultimately forgiveness and peace, The Gift resonates with readers, even if the experiences are not the same. There's a certain level of veracity to human nature that I find so poignant yet hopeful. There's hope because of light shines the most in darkness. There's such candor in the author's writing that I just love. It may not be what I'd want to feel at the moment, but many times, I would think back of the message, the story, the characters, and then realize, they made an impact that lasts. And that is The Gift, and the author's gift to her readers, at least to me. So, thank you, Shelley Shepard Gray.

". . . we're all just people in training. . ."

Shelley Shepard Gray has a GIFT! From the first book in The Amish of Hart County Series she has had my heart. The story of Neil and Susanna is a beautiful portrayal of the twist and turns of life and the effects of others actions and how they create our path in life. Neil's kind heart leads him to aid an injured Susanna. Neil's family's hurt causes him to dislike the family who purchased the family farm. Then he finds out that Susanna's Family owns the Farm. The story has some mystery and intrigue. Through the twist we learn that The Gift is not always material.

THE GIFT is the third book in the Amish of Hart County series by popular author Shelley Shepard Gray, but it easily stands alone. This one is also a Christmas book, but could be read at any time of the year.

Written in Ms. Gray's sweet voice, the story is everything you come to expect from a Shelley Shepard Gray novel. Sweet. Innocent. Engaging.

Sue and her family are new to Hart County, but they expected to quickly make friends and be accepted. Instead, Sue is shot at right away, and while they missed her and the buggy, they did spook her horse, causing an accident, the loss of a valuable horse and buggy, and fear. Then a fence is broken down. When their bridge is deliberately sabotaged it seems plain as day someone is trying to scare them away. But who?

I had my suspicions who was behind it, but I'm not going to tell you who or if I was right or not.

If you like romantic suspense but are the screamish sort, there is nothing remotely scary about Ms.. Gray's stories. Ever. Or at least not yet. No dead bodies, and nothing jumping out and going boo. But it is engaging and you have to keep reading to find out who-dun-it, or if you guess early on, to see if you are right. Why was fairly evident.

There are two romances in the story, too. Four point-of-views.

Fans of Shelley Shepard Gray and Amish fiction will want to read this book.

The Gift was another atmospheric Amish read that made me chilly just reading it. This is a story about two families, one who lost the farm and one whose dreams came true at finding and buying a farm that they could actually afford. Starting off with quite a wild ride, we are gripped with a sense of unease and a dark malevolence from the very start. Too many accidents cannot be ignored. Susanna and her family try to reach out to their neighbors to find out why they have been ostracized by the community when they have just moved in. Trying to begin a new life in ideal circumstances is hard enough but when it seems someone wants you off the farm permanently, that is scary.

I really liked the angle of the story where Susanna and Neil Vance-the oldest son of the family that sold the farm- become unlikely friends and reluctant love interests. Not only do we have their story but we get Susanna’s sister, Amanda and their new neighbor’s romance as well. A dark, chilling story within the Christmas season made for an interesting read this holiday season.

I received a copy of this novel for free. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

This was a very interesting Amish story. It had mystery, danger, and double romance. The Schwartz Family has scrimped and saved for a long time in order to buy a farm. The Vance Family has put their farm up for sale because of debt and mismanaged finances. The small community seems to have hard feelings against the newcomer Schwartz Family for "taking the Vance's farm away from them". Mysterious "accidents" seem to befall the Schwartz Family, some life threatening. Who is behind these happenings or are they truly accidents?
Initially Neil Vance sounds off, rather harshly, to Susanna. His friend Dale confronts him on it and soon he apologizes. Susanna, her sister Amanda, Dale and Neil band together to try and find out who is behind these incidents, before someone is seriously hurt or worse.
I found myself reading into the night to find out the real culprit. I had a couple of guesses but found myself surprised at the end.
I won a copy of The Gift in a giveaway but was not required to write a review.

A little bit of Christmas and a whole lot of mild suspense.

The Schwartz family has recently purchased a farm and are trying to settle in, find their place and make new friends in their new community. Their neighbors, however, are rather standoffish, mostly because out of loyalty to the Vance family who sold the farm and seemed like victims of an unfair trade.
And then, strange and dangerous things start happening to the Schwartzes. Those could be just accidents or maybe, just maybe, deliberate efforts to scare the newcomers off the farm. The story gets even more interesting when, after a rocky start, Susanna Schwartz and Neil Vance become friends and then some.

Suspense is not my preferred genre, but I did not mind reading this story at all. It flowed smoothly, the interaction between characters was enjoyable. The significance of the last "accident" and the place Susanna and Neil found themselves in on Christmas Eve was rather powerful. Jesus came as Light into this dark world to save us, a situation very similar to Susanna and Neil's who desperately needed light and rescuing.

The Gift is the third book in The Amish of Hart County Series by Shelley Shepard Gray. Overall, I enjoy this book because I like the characters. I was really pulling for Neal and Susanna from the very first scene. Although one can argue predictability. And honestly, the romance was evident from the start.

Though I liked the characters, the ending of this book was so anticlimactic. When I'm thrown a red herring, I'd like to see the real culprit brought to life in a way that takes my breath.  The suspense fell short for me and I never felt any real urging to find out who was threatening the Schwartz family.

The story ended so abruptly that it nearly felt as if the story were incomplete. The way that each of these stories have been so far is that each character has a small cameo in the next book. I can't imagine that satisfying my need for more.

This  was a quick read that I still enjoyed up until the ending. All issues aside, I would suggest this book for people who enjoy the genre.

When you start reading this book you are grabbed on the first page. I wanted to know right away who was causing the accidents. Like Susanna's father you think the obvious person would be Vance and his family but you don't want to it to be him so you keep looking for clues to figure out who it could be. This book was full of adventure, mystery and love. It was fun to go back to Hart County and meet some new friends. The author does a good job of developing the characters and making them very likable. This series has been fun to read and while they are best read as the series you can read them and stand alone books and still be enjoyed.

An Amish mystery with lots of intriguing details that I really enjoy! Susannah and her family have just bought a farm in a new community and are having difficulty fitting in. The problem is that they purchased the farm from the well-loved Vance family who have had a hard time financially and had to sell off the family farm. The resentment in the community is real and heartbreaking at times. When Neil Vance meets Susannah after a buggy accident, he has difficulty hiding his resentment for her and her family. The story is well-written and continues with the intrigue as one “accident” after another befalls the Schwartz family and the mystery of who is responsible has several possible suspects. I enjoyed the story that is intertwined with a growing romance, but my favorite part of the book was getting to know the lovable characters. Perfect story to read anytime you need a mystery and an encouraging good book!

"The Gift" by Shelley Shepard Gray "is the third book in the ( Amish of Hart County) series. Each one can be read as a stand alone but like always I have read them all and each story is separate except the sheriff is the same in each story. You might be asking yourself why a sheriff in an Amish story, well it is true that these books are of the Amish genre but they are a mixture of mystery also.

"The Gift" is a story that kept me turning the pages. It is a story that shows that people need to take responsibilities for their own actions and not blame others. I am including two quotes from the book that I think are what life is really all about, even in fiction, there is truth to be found. “ It ain’t what we have or don’t have that counts. What matters is how we follow our faith and treat others.” The second quote is "None of us ever really knows how what we do and what we say affects everyone around us. It's easy to make someone's day.... or ruin it with just a few short words".

I really like how the title is explained in the story. It isn't specifically explained but if you read the book you will get it!

I recommend "The Gift" by Shelley Shepard Gray to anyone that likes the Amish genre and is a fan of Shelley Shepard Gray and to anyone that likes a clean love story and mysteries. So this book could be a favorite of many readers.

Shelley Shepard Gray has found a way to combine three of my favorite genres into one beautifully written story - amish fiction, clean light romance, and mystery! I have been a fan of Shelley's for a long time, and I think this style of writing has been my favorite of hers to date. She easily blends the three genres together as if they always belong together - just like a perfectly finished puzzle. Her stories leave readers wanting more, and I hope there is more stories such as this in the future.

Susanna and Neil were wonderful characters. And while I liked them together, I have to admit that there were parts that I preferred them alone. Neil struggles were my favorite to read about. The back and forth of resentment and love pulled at my heart strings. His thoughts and actions were realistic, and I found myself kind of expanding on his thoughts throughout the day. How would I react in that situation? Would I find it in my heart to let go and move on?

With a powerful message of hope, consequences, and love, this book has a little something for everything. Readers will find themselves falling for Susanna and Neil, while trying to solve the whodunit mystery to bring peace between the families. They may even find themselves unable to put the book down until the mystery is solved.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to leave a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Gift opens one early November evening and Susanna Schwartz was driving home when her horse was frightened by gunshots which resulted in an accident. The Schwartz have just moved into their new home in Hart County but the Amish community has not been as welcoming as they expected. It seems the family, the Vances, who sold them their house was not happy with the sale.

Neil Vance found it hard to accept the changes in his life and yet, he should not have taken it out on Susanna. As Neil and Susanna tentatively found their way to being friends, other mysterious sinister incidents haunt the Schawartz. Who is trying to get the Schwartz to leave their new home?

A single sitting reading for me as I just can't get enough of Amish romance suspense, it seems. Even as I enjoyed reading this sort of community and the romance, I did feel that this book to be unfinished. I was surprised to find the book finished when I expected at least another chapter or two to tie up loose ends. While the romance was resolved fine, the mystery was sort of left out to air. A comfort read but... could be wrapped up better.

Author Shelley Shepard Gray has written "The Gift" and this is part of her series called The Amish of Hart County series. As usual I really enjoy her stories. Suzanna Schwartz is very happy to be on her new farm with all of her family right in time for Christmas. Why does it seem that other people are trying to hurt them or at the very least trying to make them leave? It can be no accident when her sister is almost killed. Neil Vance is the man who used to own the farm with his family, before they lost it. He is very upset but then he meets Susanna. She is not at all how he though she would be and he finds himself drawn to her. Susanna is in the middle, everyone believes that they know who is the real culprit. She also is drawn to Neil. Should she just leave with her family, or should they try to find the guilty person. Whatever she decides she better hurry! I give this book a 5/5. I was given this book for a review and all opinions are mine.

The Gift is Shelly Shepard Gray's third installment in her Amish of Hart County series. Although it's the third book it can be read as a stand alone. I believe once you read it though you will go back and read the entire series so far, it's that good!

Susanna Schwartz and her family are enjoying their new farm. On her way home from dropping her sister off at a friends house, Susanna has a buggy accident. It takes her a few weeks to recover, but once she's ready she is excited to attend their first church service in the new community. When she receives a less than warm greeting she is confused as to why half the community is angry with her and her family. They had hoped this was a chance for a new beginning, but she's beginning to think they will never be welcome.

Neil Vance and his family are the talk of the town. His dad finally had to come clean about his gambling and all the debts he owed. The family had to put the farm up for sale. That's bad enough but the family that bought the farm barely offered them enough to make it worth selling. Forced to move in with his dad's brother, Joseph, the family's shame and anger is at an all-time high. Neil can't stop thinking about the girl he helped in the buggy wreck. She was the prettiest girl he had ever seen and he would love to see her again. Imagine his surprise when the girl of his dreams shows up at church! Things were going along great until he learns her name, Susanna Schwartz. Then his admiration turns to anger, her family is the family that bought his farm, and in his opinion cheated his family.

The Gift is a great reminder that there are always two sides to every story and that things aren't always what they seem. Susanna and Neil spend a great deal of their time trying to figure out their friendship because of family bias. I understand the need for family loyalty but sometimes you have to make up your own mind about a person. Neil is hurt and angry and sometimes he takes that anger out on Susanna. What I love about him though is that he's quick to apologize and mean it. You have to give him credit for that. I know people who are wrong and know they are wrong but never will admit it. Neil isn't a guy who plays around with someone's feelings. He's a straight shooter and you always know where you stand. He comes off as gruff and abrasive at times but I really liked the fact he wasn't a flirt.

Susanna lacks self confidence. She always sees herself as an odd ball and an ugly duckling, which couldn't be further from the truth. Sure she isn't as outgoing as her sister, but she is a true blue friend and will stick by you no matter what. I love her heart, she is open and honest and willing to do just about anything to help a friend. Her shyness makes her a little awkward in social situations, but once you get to know her you will love her. I really liked Susanna, I feel like we could be friends in real life. She has a kind and compassionate heart and isn't overly dramatic. I felt bad for her though, because she kind of took the brunt of the Vance's family anger for a while, but she was persistent and eventually won them all over.

As Neil and Susanna's friendship grows a series of random accidents has them questioning everything they know. Can Susanna trust Neil? Or could he be the one causing her family all the trouble? When Susanna shares with Neil her belief that these accidents are anything but random their friendship will be put to the ultimate test.

Shelley Shepard Gray has done an amazing job of weaving mystery and romance together. You will be hooked from the first page and won't be able to put the book down until you finish. She creates characters that are flawed yet have redeeming qualities and you will find yourself having a hard time remembering they are fiction! I absolutely loved The Gift and believe you will too.It would make a great gift or stocking stuffer for the book nerd in your life. And if you're like me and are the book nerd in your family treat yourself to this great book. You'll be glad you did!
