He’s mysterious. He’s sexy. And he stars in all her nightmares.

Ani, meanwhile, has no drama. No distractions from her goals. And, above all, no Dane. He might have every other girl panting, but she sees through the act he puts on to the danger lurking underneath. They live in a world that prizes dominance above all else and Dane is dominant…to a fault. He doesn’t just want to control the women in his life, he wants to possess them.

Utterly.

Dane drives himself as hard as he drives his cars, and he’s built an empire worth billions. An empire within an empire, one that rose from the ashes of the Third World War. Ani chafes at its constraints almost as much as she loathes Dane’s attentions. She vows to herself that she’ll never be taken.

And then something terrible happens.

P.J. Fox published her first story when she was ten. Between then and the present moment, she detoured to, in no particular order, earn several degrees (including a law degree), bore everyone she knew with lectures about medieval history, get married, and start a family. She realized, ultimately, that she had to make a go of this writing thing because nothing else would ever make her happy.

The frustrations were worth it in the end.

Now, I could easily write a review about Fallen and leave it at that, but there was a little more work involved than just sending my ARC to my kindle. I’d seen this story on a friend requests timeline and it caught my eye. I can’t remember if it was the review or the cover, but something definitely made me stop and take a gander. When I saw that it was on Netgalley, I decided to request it and lucky for me I got it. So, keen to get my copy, I hit the send to kindle and waited for it to download.

I started…and within the first few pages I was frustrated. The writing was engaging but the copy I had received had issues with the line formatting. I persevered for a little while but eventually had to get in touch with Netgalley to let them know that I would struggle to read it and review it in its current form. Words were cut in half on separate lines and dialogue conversations between characters were crammed into one paragraph. It was a bloody mess. Netgalley told me that that could sometimes happen and that I should try reading it on my computer.

Ummm…excuse me, I don’t think so. They have the send to kindle option, that should work…full stop. Crazy thing, I nearly got in touch with the author direct. Even now, I kind of wish that I had.

Anyways…I ended up reading it on my phone which SUCKED!! I swear I nearly went blind. It also didn’t help that I left my reading glasses at work and things were a wee bit blurry. So, I definitely felt like I earned my reviewers stripes today…took one for the team…stepped up to the plate…suffered through the pain.

I LOVED THIS STORY!!!

So, it turns out that after World War Three we will see us going back in time. Unfortunately, equal rights for women, making our own decisions, supporting ourselves, and living independently from men have vanished. Fallen was a little like reading a historical romance set in the future. I found it fascinating and a little horrifying. While I find it somewhat intriguing in historical romance (lack of women’s rights) it is not so intriguing thinking about my rights removed in the future.

Now, this isn’t the only interesting part, we’re also told that in this new time, justice will be a wee bit different. Some twit comes up with the idea that one day per year of killing without repercussion will prevent murders happening any other time of the year. Yep, you guessed it, Purge Day is a crazy bloodbath day and no one is safe.

Fallen is a love story that introduces us to Antoinette and Dane just before the next Purge Day is due. Antoinette is not a fan of Purge Day as she lost both her parents due to them. Dane, he sees the sense in them and partakes in them. Antoinette is middle class and Dane is upper class. So, the two are on opposite sides of the fence with Antoinette hating Dane because of his beliefs and the status he holds. Dane saw Antoinette and has wanted her as his own from the first moment he met her. If only Antoinette didn’t think he was a monster.

At first, I was frustrated with Antoinette and her hate of Dane. I couldn’t understand her deep abhorrence of him. As the story goes on, I began to admire her determination to not settle. Dane has his pick of women and uses them frequently, but only on his terms. His heart only belongs to Antoinette and he makes it known that’s how he feels. He regularly faces and accepts her disdain because she’s different and he admires her strong mind and attitude which is unusual in women of this day.

I admit this story will not be for everyone. There is murder and mayhem, a lack of respect towards people of lower class and an underlying feeling of doom and gloom if this IS what we can expect for our future. While an unconventional start to their relationship, I was fully invested in them making it. While Dane’s sexual past was a little icky to me, I could understand that his feeling for Antoinette was from afar, so no relationship was affected.

Seriously, I loved finding this new to me author and glad I stuck with it until the end. I felt sorry for P.J. Fox that my reading experience was tarnished by the frustrations I was feeling towards my comfort while reading. I was tempted to buy a copy and read that, but to me, that defeats the purpose of reviewing an ARC.

So, I took one for the team. Readers, I can definitely vouch for this original and interesting tale and I would not hesitate to read more from this author in the future.

LOVED IT!

After World War Three world is different. The distinction between classes is high, cities are polluted with smog and filth and equal rights for women and men are gone....

Ohh yes and once a year , there is "The Purge".

The Purge occurs for 12 hours, during which all crime is legal and all police, fire, and medical emergency services remain unavailable.

Ani lost both her parents to the purge and hates it.

Ani

Dane on the other hand participates. He is rich, handsome and a manwhore....he has everything he wants.... except Ani.

Dane

He might be her polar opposite, but he has a lure that, try as she might, she can't deny.

DNF @ 45%.

This story started off slow but it was interesting enough for me to continue. However, the h made this story unbearable. She sucked! How can someone hate the world they live in so much? She didn't like anything. Plus, the way she treated the H made her come across as the villain.

“I’d intended to win you over, ah, I believe the phrase is the right way. Or the way, at least taught by mothers and gentlemen’s magazines and approved by my housekeeper. With flowers and jewels and whatever other things women might want. And flirtations and promises, not all of which were meant to be kept.”

My take on the plot.
Dane has been in love with Ani ever since he first laid eyes on her when she was sixteen. He waited for Ani but as he did he entertained other women. Now, Ani being 21 her aunt is eager for her to get married with her rich best friend Archer and one of wealthiest bachelor in the world Dane who she hates and purposely avoids during parties. The night of the Purge comes and Ani is left if with no other choice but to accept the shelter and hospitality Dane is demanding more than offering. But the death of her uncle remains a mystery, was it coincidental or intentional? Her aunt and brother even came out without a scratch.

SPOILER ALERT!!

Dane. Dane. Dane. Let’s talk about Dane.

“You were - and are - dreams made flesh.”

In their time, monogamy is not a thing. It’s not a surprise if married men would warm the beds of other women. Someone as pure as Ani caught his eye and he made an effort for her to see him differently. I was pained when he revealed to Ani that every time he approaches her he sees it clearly in her eyes fear or him. And when she’s around other people she lights up and smiles and how badly he wishes he could be the one to make her shine that way. Soon he felt like he doesn’t deserve her, his lifestyle, he himself as a human being - unpure and tainted with disgusting gossip about him - doesn’t deserve her pureness. He wishes for Ani to be happy but human as we are he can still be selfish and could not shake the fact he wants Ani for himself.

Their relationship.

“It might be fantasy, but it was better than reality.”

Ani began with hatred for Dane. I think she just hates him because of his lifestyle and Ani wants nothing to do with the drama. In the modern world he would be labeled as a ‘bad boy’ and under that category as a ‘fvck boy’. With that much stain to his name no matter how rich, utterly handsome, and composed he may be Ani only wants to stay away from him. Unfortunately for Ani, Dane seems to keep his eyes on her during parties. Soon when Ani realizes they as different as they may seem they have this special bond where they connect. The moment she accepts her feelings for him the more things become easier. The progress of their relationship wasn’t rushed, it was clear how hate turned to love. In the number of pages it may seem short but as I read with the thoughts of Ani I understand how her feelings came to be.

The mystery.
Everyone was a suspect. Okay not everyone, but a lot had motive and many gained from the death of Ani’s uncle. Up until before the revelation I wasn’t even sure who the culprit was.

The revelations.
Ani’s past uncovered it was remarkable. I was too engrossed with the story that I didn’t have a moment to step back and wonder about her past which is why I missed that detail and I failed to analyze things.

“Each war is fought with different weapons.”

The writing.
It took a long time for the story to get to the main plot. It was very hard for me to read at first, with all the placing of events, their setting, the characters. There were a lot of unnecessary side stories and some scenes took to long and weren’t even that of a game changer. The ending wasn’t rushed but it lacked happiness. Most of the story revolves around Dane and Ani’s relationship and the readers weren’t even given the privilege of seeing their wedding. I personally wanted to know what happens and how big a wedding in Victoria can be especially when you’re marrying a filthy rich man such as Dane.

"You have the right to your own life. To your own dreams, your own goals. To be yourself."

Overall I did enjoy this book so much. It was a very fun read, the thrilling events didn’t lack heart racing features. I wish for a sequel too.

It was one of a quick reading, and the story took my attention and interest. However, analyzing this fact, I assumed, that it was more because of plenty questions it gave me, so every minute I tried to look out the answers to them. It seemed like I was playing QA quest game. Unfortunately, it was no use.
In the end, I had a good love story that took place in pretty unusual circumstances of the future world. Despite the fact that the story left me with plenty of questions, I enjoyed this brainstorm game as I could invent answers by my own and in the way I like. Maybe it was conceived by the author? Hope so!

I read a romance involving "the Purge" you know like in the movies where 1 day a year you can commit any crime and no punishment?

So the heroine has been pursued by the hero. She keeps saying no. Then the Purge happens and some bad stuff happens. (Hero did not do anything bad to her)

It was interesting and he was so in love with her and would do anything to make her happy. Fallen by P.J. Fox

This story was so good but the ending was abrupt, reason why I knocked down one star.

I have to say that sometimes the h really frustraded me, even though I admired her determination to be independent. As for the H I could see that he really loved the h, and I liked that he said some hard truths to the h because she really did need to hear them.

So... I almost cried tears of joy when I found this book. Because the blurb it's so damn good I just couldn't help myself.

And then I started to read it and... well...

Let me say, this is one of those 'the synopsis its better than the whole thing' cases.

Dane!! Everything about Dane. He is so sauve haha. I wish more of the plot happened during the purge as it'll make for much more suspense and intrigue. After the purge happens, the story felt much more slow and stagnant. Also, Ani is too much.... She seems so ungrateful.

Slow easy read, that by the end had me rooting for the characters. Wish there was more to experience of Dane as he was a complex character whose secrets were never really revealed. Would definitely a second book continuing Dane and Ani's relationship.

I was given an ARC from NetGalley for my honest opinion.

This book is about the rich class and Ani doesn't fit in or want to. Ani doesn't believe in the purge and wants a man who loves her and cares about her. Everyone tells Ani true love and no purge doesn't exist in the world. Ani can't stand Dane the one man who won't give up trying to make Ani hers. Dane is Lucifer in Anis eyes he has killed and has multiple partners and Ani tells Dane he's disgusting and wants nothing to do with him. But the purge is coming up will Dane be the only man out there to keep Ani safe? Shocking, thrilling and exiting book that keeps you on your toes till the end. Evil could be closer to Ani than she even knows. 4/5 stars ****Reviewed for Sweet & Spicy Read provided for a voluntarily Advanced Reader Copy of this book ****

Fallen, P.J. Fox

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, General Fiction

I wasn't really sure what this book would be about. Seemed to be some kind of dystopian/futuristic romance read, and as I'd not read any of PJ Fox' work before I decided to try it.

I've finished now and TBH I'm still not really sure what it was about....A very strange romance between Dane and Ani, a weird society who have one might a year when everyone is free to kill who they want without reprisal, and some very odd behaving characters.

That's about it for me. I didn't really understand the story, didn't get a sense of who and what the characters were and what the whole thing was about.
The idea that the free-for-all Purge kept society working better than imprisonment was just plain weird and of course open to all sorts of abuse. Some of the characters didn't want justice, just wanted a chance to kill someone, anyone, just for "fun".
I hold my hands up and admit I skim read the last third as frankly I was floundering and just wanted to get the book finished.

This is probably one of the shortest reviews I've ever done but even though I read the whole book I still can't understand what it was about, what the point of it all was and whether or not I actually wanted Dane and Ani to end up together.

Stars: Two, a book that just didn't work for me. Might be one you love - who knows? for me though it was a fail.

I found this to be an interesting read, a dark picture to the future ahead. Ani and Dane have very different takes on the world. Ani lots both her parents to the purge and thinks it is wrong, Dane on the other hand thinks it works, even participates. Can these two opposites find love? This was a good read for me, the story had plenty of drama and suspense and I really liked both characters. Entertaining Read

Lisa and her friend Ami were at the house of a man Ari had kept rejecting to go out with. Ani was only there as her aunt and uncle wanted to impress the same man Ani kept saying no to. Lisa was the kind of person who noticed things. Lisa knew of flaws of Jasper and Danes who wanted to go out with Ani. Jasper was Danes uncle. Lisa just didn’t care about the flaws. Lisa is willing to have a fling with Jasper even if he was more than old enough to be her father. Lisa's parents seemed not to care where she was until they wanted something from her. Dane ended up alone in the same room as Ani and asked her if she would like to go for a walk outside. He promised to be a gentleman so they went out and he talked with Ani. He also invited her to stay in his uncle’s house with them during the Purge. One night where it was legal to commit crimes especially murder. Ani's parents had been murdered during such a night. After they returned to the house Ani saw one of her best friends Archer. Ani had never thought of Archer as more than a friend although her aunt and uncle felt Archer would be a good match for Ani. Ani didn’t understand why Archer was friends with Dane and his crowd. Dane does actually care for Ani and has for a long time. Dane is the only man that can actually save Ani from the Purge and he had already offered to have her stay at his uncles with them. Ani starts to see a different side of Dane and finds herself becoming attracted to him.
I liked this story but it was definitely a different type of romance. Luckily I watched the movie The Purge so i was familiar with this night and what happened. Or I might not have understood the whole concept of the Purge. With this prior understanding it was an easy read. I liked how Dane I liked how Dane showed Ani a different side of himself. I felt bad for Ani that her parents were killed during one of the Purge nights. This society was hard to understand to some degree but there seemed to be some deterioration of the society and it was more violent but there had also been another world war and things had obviously changed. All and all I enjoyed this read . I liked the plot and being so different it was a little more difficult to rate this. But I do believe it was a four rating.
