When the Horseman of War decides to have a little fun and he accompanies a favored demon into the human realm to join in a skirmish, he never expects to meet a vampire that jumpstarts his libido. A romp with Monte Hanover would be fun, passionate, and maybe even worthy of a repeat…after they finish the battle, of course. To his surprise, he helps rescue a prairie dog shifter that brings out protective instincts he didn’t even know he was capable of. Unfortunately, little Xerxes turns out to be Monte’s beloved. Scratching his itch with either man seems unlikely. Then, the unthinkable happens, and he realizes without his intervention, it would mean the death of both men. Can he take that leap? Or will War decide two lives, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t really worth the changes he’d need to make?
2.5 Why oh why are we continuing the theme of demon generals and now actually add in one of the big guys, the horseman War....
One of the things I found strange is that War is attracted to Monte and then Xerxes (so another weird name.. I can't help but think where do some of these names come from.. like it just seems so... random and kind of out there). Monte and Xerxes are scent attracted immediately, but they both are also attracted to War (minus the scent). Kind of defies beloved/mate bond when they are still attracted to another once scenting their other half.
So pessimestic me, have to find a way around that to make a threesome bond AND include what's basically an immortal. Ya know... just to keep in interesting and different (insert sarcasm here).
3.5 Stars ~ While this is the twelfth book in the series, Taming War can be read as a standalone, although I would recommend reading the prior book to get a little more background on the Four Horseman and their demons.
The Horseman of War is on a mission with a vampire Coven against some rather nasty “priests” that we met in the last book of this series. This human group is torturing paranormals—vampire and shifters—and they must be stopped. War also has kind of a thing for Monte Hanover, a rather smartass vampire who is part of the coven that is fighting the priests. Monte doesn’t really want to be involved with a Horseman or demon, even though one of his coven is with one of War’s demons.
During the battle at the priests’ underground bunker, War and Monte discover a shifter who is about to killed by one of the keepers. During the ensuing battle, War takes a liking to Xerxes, the shifter, but then finds out that he is Monte’s beloved. Now he’s in a dilemma because he likes them both.
If only I wasn't so invested in main story threads... [series rambling of disappointment, you've been warned] at this stage I want actual answers, hell I want them over couples getting together. if there was a nonfiction account of all the answers I'd pick it up and enjoy the last 20-30 books a whole lot more
And it's saddening for me as I would enjoy theses mindless stories, I love them, truely, but it's come to a point that every new book I hope for something more and get massively disappointed when I realise it's either been forgotten, pushed aside or the start of a new plot section. We've come to far but I'm afraid if it goes on much longer the series will just disappear off my radar without me careing for the answers....I want to care, I do but it's hard to continue on
New installments have been major disappointments because they are very short and not fully developed. This particular book is a menage relationship which always requires more relationship development.

Unfortunately, as they try to escape and dispatch the rest of the evil crew, Monte is seriously injured. Xerxes is frightened and calls for War, who is able to rescue both Xerxes and Monte. Surprisingly, both Xerxes and Monte become attached to War, which causes other troubles with the demons and the Horseman. Hopefully everything can work out for everyone involved, and things can back to (para)normal. :-)
This was a really interesting story in this series. We get a lot more of the Horsemen, the demons, and another glimpse into their world. Monte is very entertaining, both with War and with Xerxes. I found myself wondering what would happen between these three characters as there has never been a throuple in the series. The way Charlie Richards worked it out was intriguing, and I will be waiting to see what happens next in this world. You’d think at this point there wouldn’t be new twists, but with this threesome, the author has shifted the paradigm of this world. Recommended for fans of the series and the paranormal worlds of Charlie Richards, with a fresh spin on the bonds of mates, beloveds and animas and the Horsemen.
Wow! I think this is the first Charlie Richards book I’ve ever read that could be called ménage! (I looked and didn’t find any others, but I could have missed one… she’s written a ton of books!)
In any case, this is very unique. We have our typical set up with a Vampire – Monte- meeting his Beloved, a Prairie Dog Shifter named Xerxes on a rescue mission. Both Monte and Xerxes identify the other as their “other half” but the presence of War – one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, muddies the water.
War had been flirting with Monte before he meets Xerxes and it’s War who finds Xerxes first and he’s attracted to the shifter, as well. Charlie pulls some writer voodoo and finds a plausible way for the three of them to “need” one another and bind to each other.
There’s some guilt but no jealousy and it’s an interesting twist on the Fated Mates storyline.
These are short stories, so once everyone meets and “binds themselves” to one another – things are pretty much over. But it was fun and creative and War is a pretty great character. I’m hoping his “brothers” get a story and a mate (or two) as well!
I enjoyed the three main characters of this story, and how they all dealt with bonding together. Xerxes was a prairie dog and sounded simply adorable. The storyline was fun with its dangers, and even the passion between them was hot. I've never read a book about the horseman of war, so that was unique, and the writing was well done also. I hope that the author continues adding on to this series since it's definitely one of my favorites.
All joking about a prairie dog and War aside, this was actually really good. None of Richard’s other books have been poly so it was a pleasant surprise especially considering the amount of crying I did at the beginning. Seriously I had to stop reading for awhile! I’m really happy how things turned out. I didn’t expect the horsemen to get their own books so that’s exciting.
I'm basically just reading these books to get them off my shelf. Sometime it's easy. Sometimes it's like pulling teeth. Drawn out and painful. I have lost the interest in the series as a whole I think... I don't even know where it started... All I know is all these series are connected some how... vaguely. The new books just feels like rinse and repeat at this point. Once in a while I find one installment that is actually OK. I hope with every book that this will be one. Well.... this wasn't. It's definitely rinse and repeat and also contradicts the whole world building base about mates.
I really loved this and hope all the Horsemen get their someone just like War did. Death would be a wonderful character to start with next. Just suggestions and wishes! ~ Kirsten
War comes to the battle to relax and have fun. He meets a vampire that he wants to know better and then a prairie dog shifter. The vampire and shifter are mates and war makes 3. All of the horsemen make an appearance.
This book was a little different the the others in the series but it was still a very good book. I always enjoy this series. I am looking to see what happens next.
