Potter meets Marple in this humorous, supernatural mystery. Hold on to your broomsticks; it's going to be a wild ride!
Nebula Dreddock has been murdered. Most would say the actress had it coming, but that’s beside the point. Nobody deserves to die this way. Even if it happens to be Gless Inlet’s bitch … ahem ... witch-iest A-lister.
Portia Fearwyn, Nebula's crotchety neighbor, seems the most likely suspect. The pair have shared some bad blood, after all. But, what about Cressida Dreddock, Nebula's mad-as-a-hatter twin? With multiple escapes from Midnight Hill asylum, it’s soon clear that Nebula’s crazy sister does, in fact, have an even crazier motive to want her famous twin dead.
Reluctant witch, and practicing herbalist, Hattie Jenkins is drawn into the case as herbal consultant. But, wherever Hattie is, her eight (insufferably) immortal black cats aren’t far behind.
Will Hattie and her fuzzy sidekicks find Nebula's killer before yet another untimely death takes place? And, can Hattie pull it off without having to engage with her inner sorceress? Join Hattie and The Infiniti as they race against the clock to unravel the clues!
This is a clean and wholesome supernatural cozy mystery for lovers of paranormal romance comedy. Part one of an eight-part series: Hattie Jenkins and the Infiniti Chronicles.
1) Filthy Witch and Dead Famous 2) The Violet Countercharm 3) The Witch of Bohemia 4) The Black Diamond Curse 5) A Spell in Mag Mell
For a first book I thought this book was just okay. It was not a book I couldn't finish. I enjoyed the humor between Hattie and her cats. It was a light easy read, yet it seemed a bit jumbled in how many intros were done in such a short book. The ending was surprising and the best part of the book. I could have done with a bit more plot that stayed on focus, and less rambling in the beginning and middle, however.
Pearl Goodfellow's Filthy Witch and Dead Famous is the first installment in the Hattie Jenkins and the Infiniti cozy mystery series. Hattie is an herbalist and reluctant witch with eight immortal cats. One evening, she flies to a wealthy client's home to delivery an anti-aging remedy, discovers the client's golem motionless in the kitchen, and the owner's dead body in the bedroom. Hattie agrees to act as a consultant for the murder investigation, and her nosy cats take turns pitching in with their own unique abilities.
An entertaining mystery made more enjoyable by the delightful feline characters. 4 stars.
Midnight, Eclipse, Fraidy, Shade, Onyx, Gloom, Carbon , Eeyore are immortal black cats known as " The Infiniti ". The cats live with Hattie Jenkins, a practicing herbalist and a witch although a reluctant one. Hattie and the cats live in a magical/ portion shop inherited from a grandmother. One of Hattie clients dies on Gless Inlet. The Chief Para Investigator draws Hattie and her Infiniti into the case. Good cast of colorful, vivid, zany usual characters give Hattie and the cats a good suspect list. The cats each their own personalities and are able to talk and perform various functions. Quick, enjoyable supernatural paranormal Cozy. This is part 1 in the Hattie Jenkins & The Infiniti.
I was turned on to this author and book recently and really glad I read this! I love cats and was really tickled that the cats were an integral part of the storyline.
I am really into natural products AND herbs and was extremely excited to find recipes add throughout the book. I can't wait to try them!!
The reason I only gave this 4 stars you ask? There are several typos and a few missing words that I had to mentally add in while reading to make the sentence(s) grammatically correct. Even with the typos, I would highly recommend this author and this series! Now on to the next book for me!
It took me a while to get into this book because there were just, and I can't believe I am saying this, too many cats. I never thought it would be possible to have too many cats, but the large number of magical cats with special skills and the ability to speak made it a little bit hard to follow. After I gave up trying to remember the cats, the story moved along a bit better, but there still seemed to be too many humans as well. So I gave up trying to remember them as well. At that point, despite having no attachment to any of the characters -- human or feline -- the story was kind of fun to follow. It wasn't terrible, overall, but I doubt I will read any others in this series.
I personally enjoyed this book. It had mystery, drama and intrigue; a little bit of romance and lots of humor. I can't say that it was gory and it wasn't scary -- and that was ok with me. As a cat lover I was tickled by the flamboyant characters of 'The Infiniti', as well as the town members. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series and anxious to see how Hattie blossoms as she continues to be a consultant for 'the Chief'.
Took a bit to get into this one, but was glad I did. Ms. Goodfellow has created a very vivid and interesting world serving as a perfect backdrop to her colorful characters. An exceptionally enjoyable read. I am excited to see what Hattie is up to in the next book!
I enjoyed this book. I really liked Hattie, she was relatable. Her relationship with those around her was great, I liked that she wasn't always perfect and had some insecurities. The mystery of "who dunnit" was good too. I kept going back and forth on who I thought it was. Well written, fun read!
I found it really an easy read, with some humor. Interesting characters though not all are human. If looking for light entertainment this should fit the bill.
Filthy Witch and Dead Famous (Hattie Jenkins & The Infiniti Chronicles, #1) by Pearl Goodfellow
I had high hopes for this first in the series book, but I was a bit disappointed. I rated the book 3 stars in that the mystery portion of the book was very good. The plotting and pacing were pretty good. The characterizations were okay -- although the only charcter I found really likable (besides the cats) was Millie. While the prickly parts of a couple of the characters seemed to work themselves out as the story continued, it still ended the main character, Hattie, and her wish-he-was boyfriend, not the most likable of characters. I also found the writing still to be a bit stiff and sometimes downright awkward, as in this, at 2143: "Forgive me, as no time for a bad pun is this." Another occurs at 2412: "No idea have I to file this paperwork..." And yet another at 2581: "Saved his life you did." These three occurences of awkward sentence structure (Hello Yoda!) was dialogue for one of the characters, Rabbi Isaac Goldsmith, so I'm assuming it was intended.
But there were a lot of just plain errors and/or confusing spots. At 521: "...she glanced at me with a slight not of recognition." (Sigh). At 1244 there are two mentions of a character by name, once as Jeanie and once as Jeannie. So which (no pun intended) was it? At 1825, the author mixes up her characters. Millie is talking and Hattie is looking at a note next to what Millie is working on, and the text goes like this: Seeing where I was looking, Hattie assured me, "Oh, don't worry." Nope, that was Millie, not Hattie.
I was confused by this at 2143: "..as he narrowed his eyes through his glasses." How does one do that?
Another instance of two different spellings of the same name occurs when, at 2376 Millie calls the newly named golem "Gabby," but then at 2396, Millie refers to her as "Gabbie." Another error involving names occurs at 2672 when Hattie says she is no Miss. Marple. The Miss does not need a period, as it might if it were Mrs. or Mr. or even Ms. And, then at 2720, Hattie refers to that conversation, on then she thinks of what she said as Ms. Marple.
Besides that, the witching world that Goodfellow creates is full of non-existent herbs and half-baked spells and witches (or at least magic-abled persons) who do not practice magic or practice it very sparingly. What fun is that? So, no, this wasn't the most enjoyable read to me. It took me 6 days (4/20-25) to complete a book the size of which would usually have taken me 2 or 3 days, mostly because it just wasn't that much fun.

The Chimera Charm (Hattie Jenkins & The Infiniti Chronicles Book 6) The Warlock Weapon (Hattie Jenkins & The Infiniti Chronicles Book 7)
Hattie owns an apothecary where she specializes in herbal supplies. She lives in a set of islands where lots of witches and paranormal activities are a normal course of life. Hattie makes a delivery to a very mean actress that also lives in the town only to find her dead in her room. Together with the help of her 8 feline friends, Hattie tries to find out what happened to the actress that no one liked.
I found it very difficult to read this book. Hence the 2.5 rating. The saving grace in the book was the 8 feline associates that Hattie has, each with a different personality befitting their names. I thought the story to be very expected and clues not very well done as to who was the villain.
I have to say though I loved the idea of the cats! Kudos the author for coming up with this slant on Hattie and her feline friends. I found the feline very likeable and very well developed. Did I mention the cats could all talk to everyone except the normal humans that were pretty non existent in the story.
I gave this such a low rating because there were so many typos and grammar errors in the story. I would however read another as I really loved the cats and Hattie. Hope the author gets a better editor in the second story.
While delivering a concoction to Glessie Isle's resident bitch-witch, Hattie discovers the woman dead. She uses a scrying spell to see that someone was with Nebula Dreddock at the time of her passing, which points to murder. When the police realize that what killed Nebula was plant-based, they enlist Hattie's help as a consultant. Soon, however, Hattie is going above and beyond, talking to residents and subtly questioning suspects...all with the help of her cats.
It's going to take a team effort to solve Nebula's death, but Hattie has the resources to make it work.
The story was okay. It was neither great nor bad. The talking cats were an unusual touch. Some things didn't make a lot of sense, however, such as the fact that Hattie changed her name because as a child, she was unable to save her parents from a fire...? The narrative was filled with minor editing errors. Nothing major, but annoying due to the frequency.
While this was a fairly good read, I did have some issues that brought it down to a 2.5 (rounded up to 3 stars). First and foremost is the grammar and punctuation errors. When there are just a few I pretty much let it go, but when there are a lot, well, it pulls me out of the story too much for a good rating. My other issue(s) are the eight immortal cats (The Infinities). I love stories with animals in them, but these guys were mostly irritating. Their names seem to be their personalities (can we say Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs). For being immortal and, therefore. having lifetimes of opportunities to develop, they were mostly childish. While the title is catchy, it really doesn't convey any of the story (except for the famous dead person).
I would have enjoyed this book much more if the author hadn't consistently used "IT'S" (with apostrophe, short for IT IS or IT HAS) where "ITS" (no apostrophe, meaning belonging to it) was appropriate. I remember, several years ago, my granddaughter told me that her elementary school English teacher told her class that an apostrophe should always be used with "IT'S"; obviously, Ms. Goodfellow attended the same class.
Hattie's sleuthing skills would make Jessica Fletcher proud, her brain keeps working even asleep. Of course, Hattie has extra help, her sweet cats offer a wide range of abilities. We get a glimpse at Hattie's past, her present business and interactions with friends. This is the first full book in the series and the author has done a good job of defining the characters and establishing the story line.
Murder, unrequited love and herbs make for a great story
Hattie stumbles upon a murder and is asked to consult on the investigation. With the help of her cats and her assistant, she tracks down the clues to aid her best friend David, who is the Chief of Paranormal Investigation. This story is witty and has depth.
Great start to a series. Loved Hattie as she's not your everyday witch. Can she help solve the murder? Are herbs as fault or was it by human hands? The romance is sweet and adds to the story. If you enjoy paranormal cozies like Cassidy, Peter man then this is another to add to the list. Really enjoyable.
This is one of the Hattie Jenkins books - renamed & reissued
Sooo disappointed. I thought this was a brand new series from the author. I love all the Hattie Jenkins books and this is book 1 renamed and reissued. It is still a terrific read but I must admit that I do feel somewhat miffed!
I love this series! ! ! This is my second time reading this book and I'm following it up with Book 2, which I have also read. I'm going to go through the whole series and wanted to refresh myself with what happened in the past so I could see the progression of the characters and their relationships with each other. These books can be read as stand-alones, but it is my choice to do it this way!
Quirky characters, cats included, nice, partially eccentric leading lady. Put them together and you get a story that provides reading pleasure. Whether or not you like cats, you will like this story that is dominated by 8 supernatural cats and their "pet" Hattie Jenkins. There are a few laughs along the way too.
This was my first time reading this author, I liked the storyline and the book was enjoyable.I loved the talking cats and the golem. It was easy to read, straight to the point who-done-it.I would read another by this author
This book is a bit better done than others of its type with excellent world building and rather charming characters, most notably the cats or Limniscate. Fraidy was especially well done and the catnip imbibing Jet was a hoot. I definitely would recommend this series.
While this book had some grammar errors, it was still a good read. I think some things could have been expanded a little more, but none the less I will be reading the rest.
The mystery is engrossing and the storyline, first-rate; I do wish that the characters were more fully developed, though, and that some effort at competent editing was present.
And there are CATS! A charming mystery with Magick, 8 Magickal talking cats, witches, a golem, evil doers doing evil deeds, and a mystery to solve. So, curl up in your comfy chair and enjoy the mystery.
