Alvin Tresselt (1916-2000) was born in New Jersey. He was an editor for Humpty Dumpty magazine and an executive editor for Parent’s Magazine Press before becoming an instructor and the Dean of Faculty for the Institute of Children’s Literature in Connecticut. He wrote over thirty children’s books, selling over a million copies. Although White Snow, Bright Snow won the Caldecott Medal in 1948, his best-known book is a retelling of the Ukranian folk tale The Mitten. Tresselt was a pioneer in children’s writing, well known for his poetic prose style. He created the “mood” picture book, in which the setting and description for a story was even more important than the characters and plot.

Beautiful illustrations and a good story too. I love Roger Duvoisin's unique and distinctive style, carefully chosen block colour with some black line drawing on top. The end papers are a wonderful repeat frog pattern that would make the most beautiful pyjama print. There's a lovely 60's feel to the artwork. There's a beautiful page of forest animals that look like they are painted so freely and with ease-wonderful. A nice message about considering the world around you and looking beyond your immediate surroundings, experiencing new places and meeting different people.

Oh I do so love this book. It still has a handwritten 'ticket' tucked into its binding from when I decided to make my book collection into a library (following in my librarian mother's footsteps - sssshhhhush).

I rediscovered this when my niece came to stay last year and I read it to her and we both loved the story and the illustrations. She (my niece, 6) is an excellent artist.

This is the voyage of discovery of a frog who lives at the bottom of a well all alone and thinks that is the entire world. When the well dries up he ventures 'up, up, up. One rock at a time' to see what the end of the world looks like. He's delighted to discover the world keeps getting bigger, meeting a cow with her barn, birds with their bull rushes and the deer, fox, squirrel and bear in the woods. He follows the brook, delighted by the feel of the rain on his back and then meets up with millions of other croaking frogs - hurrah.

Best bits: 'A foolish frog can be happy all alone at the bottom of a well, but a clever frog can be much happier out here' in the wider world in the middle of a million singing frogs in the rain!! Let this be my parable for 2015 xx

Frog leaves his well and immediately is confronted with an epistemological and existential crisis, through which he [spoiler alert!] arises, a more deeply satisfied frog.

Frog In The Well

2 frogs lived together but the marsh was all dried up. They found a deep well to live in, but the one frog said how would we get out. Think twice before you act.

I'm so glad Alvin Tresselt wrote this cute book so that Roger DuVoisin could do such a wonderful job illustrating it!

A tale (beautifully illustrated) about broadening one's horizons. The frog starts out all alone in a well and after a journey beyond the well meets up with many, many frogs!

We've all been the frog in the well, and we've all gone on to discover a larger world. Thank you Alvin Tresselt, but especially (always) Roger Duvoisin!
