The Meteorologist in Me by Brittney Shipp portrays a young girl’s, Summer, desire to become a meteorologist despite sibling and peer doubts. As such, local meteorologist April Showers takes her under her wing to foster confidence in herself. This story not only encourages individuals to pursue their dreams regardless of other’s opinions, but also introduces the reader to weather and a meteorologist’s role. The author cleverly named each character something related to weather such as Sunny and Monsoon. I additionally appreciated the author’s inclusion of weather facts containing specific weather-related information relevant to the story on various pages. This book would certainly pique my interest in learning more about weather and the environment, if I was not already captivated by it.

This book is about a young girl who has a dream of becoming a meteorologist when she grows up after learning about and watching the weather every day. Nearly everyone doubts her until one day she meets the meteorologist she watches on the news every day and she asks her to do the weather with her that evening. I could use this book in many ways. I could use it to introduce weather and what is meteorology. I could use it to introduce careers and we could hold a career day where everyone comes and gets to act out what they want to be when they grow up and share about their career. I could also use it as an SEL book to chase your dreams and goals even if people doubt you.
