Mike W. Barr is an American writer of comic books, and mystery, and science fiction novels. Barr's debut as a comics professional came in DC Comics' Detective Comics #444 (Dec. 1974-Jan. 1975), for which he wrote an 8-page back-up mystery feature starring the Elongated Man. Another Elongated Man story followed in Detective Comics #453 (November 1975). He wrote text articles and editorial replies in letter columns for the next few years. By mid-1980 he was writing regularly for both DC and Marvel, including stories for Marvel Team-Up, Mystery in Space, Green Lantern, and various Batman titles.
Legion of Super-Heroes #277 (July 1981) saw him take on editorial duties at DC, while writing issues of DC's Star Trek comic, for whom he created the native American character Ensign Bearclaw and a pacifist Klingon named Konom. In December 1982, he and artist Brian Bolland began Camelot 3000, a 12 issue limited series that was one of DC Comics' first direct market projects. In August 1983, Barr created what may well be his most enduring work, the monthly title Batman and the Outsiders with art by Jim Aparo. Barr wrote every issue of the original series, and its Baxter paper spinoff, The Outsiders.
His other comics work includes Mantra and Maze Agency as well as the 1987 OGN hardcover book Batman: Son of the Demon (with art by Jerry Bingham), proceeds from which reputedly "restored DC Comics to first place in sales after fifteen years." This title, and Barr's work on Batman with artist Alan Davis have been cited by Grant Morrison as key inspirations for his recent (2006) run on the Batman title.
In 2007, he wrote a two-part story for the pages of DC's JLA: Classified (#47-48, Jan-Feb 2008), returned to the Outsiders with Outsiders: Five of a Kind—Katana/Shazam #1 (Oct 2007), contributed to Tokyopop's Star Trek: The Manga, and relaunched Maze Agency at IDW Publishing. He has also scripted many of Bongo Comics' Simpsons titles, including a Christmas story for 2010.
In May 2010, the Invisible College Press published Barr's science fiction/fantasy novel, Majician/51, about the discoveries of a scientist working at Area 51.
Part of the DC Graphic Novel Collection. This book collects three stories; two full-length ones, 'Son of the Demon' and 'Bride of the Demon' featuring Batman's antagonist Ra's Al Ghul, as well as that character's very first appearance, 'Daughter of the Demon'.
Ra's Al Ghul is a very interesting Batman villain in that he actually has a great deal of respect for the 'Detective' as well as his own strict code of honour. It makes him a more complex antagonist; something which is only accentuated by Batman's on and off love affair with Ra's' daughter Talia. Having this book explore so much of that dynamic is by far its strongest element.
There's something of a James Bond vibe to these stories too; with Batman engaging in a bit of globe-trotting, infiltrating secret lairs and falling into the arms of a femme fatale. Honestly, it's not my preferred style of Dark Knight story, but it is an interesting shift in genre that some may appreciate more than me.
(Eaglemoss #33) This book consists of essentially two complete stories, followed by a few pieces of cover art and a short-ish 'prologue' from somewhere else at the end. The first story is about 80 pages long, the 2nd about twice that. Both are very well-drawn, well-written and although a little heavy on the action, quite intelligent and reasonably sensible, as comics often were in decades gone by. Ra's Al Ghul stories usually consist of a decent plot and eloquent speech, with both he and Talia playing peculiar allies/adversaries, and as such, are among my favourites in the Batman archives. Eaglemoss have done a fantastic job with the printing too. The artwork is glossy, bold, clear, well-bound, (smells gorgeous!) and there's no hint of a typo anywhere. Batman doesn't often get much better than this. 4.5/5
The first story was really well done, but the writing and art quality sipped quite a bit in the second. The first appearance of Ra’s Al-Ghul in the bonus issue is a reminder of how good Neal Adam’s art is.
One can never picture how a great villain is Ra’s al Ghul, until one read this. He’s the true heir of classic Fantomas, great precursor of modern supervillains. Great drawings, and still enough superhero silliness to have campy fun.
Some old school Batman, taking on Ra’s Al Ghul. It’s of its time, with some awkward dialogue and story. More of the vigilante detective than the superhero, but I don’t mind that aspect of classic Batman. The physical book is very high quality hardcover and paper stock, and a pleasure to hold.
Two really unique and well written batman stories focused on Ra's Al Ghul. The art was pretty decent as well! I did find the overall writing and quality of Bride of the demon (the 2nd story) to be a tad weaker. Also, Batman just kills people here right? Like straight up just kills multiple people.
