If you haven't read the series yet, this is the place to start. Detective Jane Harper and her partner, Stu Ramey, have been investigating crimes together for the last year. It's only now that their relationship has become more personal.
Jane and Stu are called out to the scene of a murder. Looks like a man has murdered his wife and flown the coop. SInce both of them have survived bad marriages, both were wondering what the woman had done to deserve this from her husband.
This is a very short story, approximately 30 pages. It does a terrific job of introducing Jane and Stu and seeing a bit of their background. The murder mystery is solved in a jiffy, mainly because of good investigative work and hunches.
I read Hopes Peak because it was a kindle first offer, and was so impressed with this writer's talent. Then after enjoying that thriller, I found this prequel and knew I had to read it. I'm glad I did. Great short crime story.
