Rock biographies are usually a mixed bag, but Hippo Taatila does a good job in telling a story of YUP from a cult band to the most beloved cult band in Finland.
Taatila's book is a fairly democratic look at a band that on paper is usually associated with one man, the singer/songwriter Jarkko Martikainen, and sometimes to the bassist/songwriter Valtteri Tynkkynen. However, as any fan of the band knows, the unit is is much more than the two men, especially live and in spirit, which makes Taatila's attempt to keep all of the members equally in the mix commendable. Of course, it does not quite work all the way.
Nevertheless, the biography seems honest and multifaceted with plenty of information that for a long time fan fills in the journey that the band went through from its artsy start to mainstream success and anticipated final call. Than again, the approach does not result in fine prose, but for any fan of the band this is a must read.
