I bought this book to find out which sectors and stocks the new tax laws would influence and what way in 2018, but the content of the book reads like it was written in April, 2017 and there is no information about the new tax laws in relation to the stock market. (Performances of stocks in 2016 were summarized for the most parts and there were predictions about the performances of some stocks in the second half of 2017 as well as 2018).

I think this title has been around for years, a new edition is published every year, and the author is occasionally changed. In comparison to the older editions I read years ago, this book has a lot more information, but is very technical and harder to read. I am impressed with the content of detailed information about each company, but not the writing style. (Just because someone is an expert in a field doesn’t make one a good teacher or a good writer. I like the older format, I think, Gene Walden used in the past) One thing to remember when writing a book about a technical subject for lay-people is to make sure the writing style is succinct, descriptive, and to the point. It may be hard for someone who knows so much about a subject to get down to the level of someone who barely knows anything. Long-winded technical sentences, especially in the first chapter, are dry and boring. (“The usual crosscurrent of upsides, including innovations, small acquisitions, and focus on higher-margined businesses swirled with the downsides of currency, emerging market headwinds and the downshift in the energy industry; revenues dropped third year in a row but only 0.5 percent (0.1 in constant currency).” ) I wished I had a dollar for every horse metaphor (There were three of them in one paragraph), repeated use of words headwinds and tailwinds, or every “too” used at the beginning of a sentence. This book has an impressive content and so much information, but is in need of a good editor who should shorten, simplify, and make the book succinct and to the point. Also I expect the content of a book recommending stocks for 2018 to be finished no earlier than December 2017.

I have read the previous editions and this 2018 version does not disappoint me, I always like the fact that the authors did look back to see how they have performed, and the foundation of the recommendations are based on Value Investing, certainly logical and makes a lot of sense.
100 stocks packed nicely in just 400 pages, strongly recommend to all investors (especially Value Investors) to pick up this book and re-read again and again.
By investing into a few ideas mentioned in this book, u would have covered back the cost of the book purchased.
