The Last Winter

Rate this book
From legendary Blizzard Entertainment artist Samwise Didier, The Last Winter is a lavishly illustrated epic fantasy novel.

Upon the death of Sprign, goddess and creator of the Pandyr and all other beasts in Mistgard, the island has come under attack by ruthless frost and fire giants from afar. Long fragmented, every creature in the eight clans must now come together to defend their land. Hammerheart must join with Darkcloud, Mistcloak with Thundermaw, and, most important, the children of Sprign must unite with their forgotten comrades of the ninth the Bearzyrk. Led by the eldest of the Pandyr, the clans make their way to the Aesirmyr Peaks for a final standoff. As frost covers Mistgard, old prejudices must be overcome if the Pandyr hope to match the giants Lord Wintyr and King Sumyr in battle.

Features all-new original illustrations throughout from Blizzard Entertainment art director Samwise Didier.

To adequately review this book we need to examine several things unique to this book.

First, the artwork in the book is fantastic. Especially for fans of World of Warcraft. The author is (was?) a senior art director for the video game. It is clear the author was inspired by the Pandaren race released in the video game.

Second, the story (revolving around several tribes of Pandyr reuniting to fight against god-like creatures) is relatively short and reads more like a mythology than a typical story. There is some characterization but most of it is fairly skin deep. We know the tribes have squabbled throughout their history, but we don't really know why. We know some tribes are generally angry and feel superior to the other tribes, but we don't really know why.

While the story isn't poor, it's not exactly unique either. The world is somewhat unique but the story is predictable and several things are left unexplained.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the artwork and, being that the story is short, recommend this to any fans of World of Warcraft or books on mythology.

Great illustrations, as I expected from Samwise, but the story wasn't very engaging.
