Okay, hear me out……

Hear me out.

We’re hearing? We’re listening? Great. Let’s get started.

This book was delightful. Consider this a true, bonafide Adult Review, if you’re looking for an objective opinion from someone who is not only 15 years above the target demographic, but does not play or even really enjoy Minecraft even a little bit.

I found this series during my weekly rounds on my library’s new books catalogue, and I thought it was so cool that kids could write their book reports on something they actually liked. But… how beneficial could it be, right? After all, this is a product of the absolutely pathetic Diary of a Wimpy Kid knockoff trend that took the Kindle store by storm in the 2010s.

Well, I’m here to tell you that there’s more than meets the eye here. Do you have a kid, a niece/nephew or a student who loves this series? Personally, I think that they’re in good hands.

Runt is such a wholesome, good-hearted protagonist who I just wanted to see succeed. His friendship with Stump feels like a genuine connection that you could see on any playground, or remember from your own childhood.

It’s not a perfect story: if I hear the word “noob” one more time, I might very well explode….. but it’s something that I bet kids look forward to reading, and that’s all that matters.

Vastly entertaining book. All the characters are very well written, and this book presents a really thrilling and intriguing narrative. I loved all the illustrations and the textured pages. I loved all the Minecraft tech included in this book, and I loved how this book expanded upon that to create such a thrilling experience.

Book Cover

Runt is a great main character. His problems feel very important and very real despite being in this Minecraft world. All of the underlined, colored, and bolded text kept the book interesting to read and helped pace the story.

I do have the context of having read the other books in this series, and I would say that the first book is the lowest, but despite looking like some sort of Minecraft/Diary of a Wimpy Kid cash grab, this book was engaging, charming, and vastly enjoyable. This book does require some knowledge of Minecraft, but if you know about the game, I'd definitely recommend reading this book or getting this for someone who knows about the game.

Review: Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior: An Unofficial Minecraft Adventure by Cube Kid

I chose to review this book because three of my grandsons (11, 9, 7) are serious Minecraft addicts, and I encourage them to enjoy reading as well. I found it an enjoyable read because "Runt" is really an appealing character, and universal: a 12-year-old in a tiny, frequently besieged village, who must face the decision of his future--irregardless of his parents' intention or society's opprobrium. In a sense, Runt stands on the threshold of a Hero's Quest, and this young man is full-on "go."

For someone who has never played Minecraft, this book is incredible! I love how Cube Kid provides context to Minecraftia (for people like me) and Runt's character development. It's so nice that he overcomes challenges and never gives up on becoming a warrior. It's also so funny!

I'm looking forward to reading more books from Cube Kid!

This gets a five star review because my son loved it, and hey, anything that stirs up a passion for reading in him (he's already anxious to get his hands on the second book in the series), deserves a high score. :)

January 2024 Review

Don't be deceived by my (now) two measley reviews I've written for this book; I've read this book/series SO MANY TIMES!
What has inspired me to read this EPICALLY-AWESOME-CREEPER-SLAPPIN-COOKIE-MUNCHIN-ENDER-POTATO-JOCKEYING book/series again?
A simple, but amazing fact; a fact that has restored my hope in humankind.
A simple, but awesome truth; a truth that has made me pick up one of my absolute favorite series for the upteenth time.

...

After many, many years of waiting. After many wars, sicknesses, disasters, stubbed toes, PB&J's consumed and almost my entire timeline of being a teenager... Cube Kid has pulled through... And completely finished his seventh novel in The 8-Bit Warrior series !

The hype is real, y'all. It's coming out really soon.

Anyway, that's all I really have to say. Except, if you're still on the fence about reading this; jump off that fence and cannonball into this great series (burn the fence too).

June 2021 Review

I am rereading this series once again.
This is definitely my favorite Minecraft series. These books are very funny and have good and creative art. I'd recommend these to any Minecraft fan, and maybe even to people who DON'T play Minecraft. I'll just say these are one of my favorite series of all time!

This book is about a mine craft villager his name is Runt and he wants to become a warrior. Runt has friend named Steve he is a warrior that helped build a wall around the village so the mobs won't get in. Steve comes to live in the village because his houses are destroyed by mobs. Then comes along Mike and he comes to the village for the same reason as Steve. Mike stays in the Jail. Runt tries to convince the mayor to have them as the combat teachers, but the Mayor says they have to prove themselves worthy. They prove themselves worthy and become combat teachers. Runt gets a good trading score and makes a monster box which gets him closer to being a warrior. The book ends there to be continued in the next book.

In the beginning of the book Max is a bully to Runt. He is mean and tries to get Runt in trouble. By the end of the book Max is nicer he wants to work together as a team.

The beginning of the book was not exciting but it got better later on. I liked that Runt and Stump are very sneaky. The book was funny and cool and I would recommend it to anyone who likes minecraft.

I bought this series to read aloud to my boys (ages 5, 7, and 8.5) at night with the hopes of understanding this game that they play. The boys have a fun time explaining stuff to me, and the series is actually pretty funny, and I was surprised to find myself laughing along side of them. I’m glad we bought the set, because it ended on a cliffhanger and we were excited to continue.

I read this book 6-7 years ago when I was younger and when I tell you I was OBSESSED with it.
One of the first series to ever give me a book hangover. 😂😭

For a long time, I'd forgotten about it...
UNTIL I FOUND THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES AT THE LIBRARY?!
Younger me was DEVASTATED when she read book 6 and it ended on a cliffhanger.
I am re-reading all of them so I can read the newest book, now. 😂 I owe it to little me to finish what I started. 😭😂

THAT BEING SAID-
I am shocked that I still enjoy this as much as I do.
It's still just as good as I remember it being. 😂 Runt's personality is awesome, and I love the Minecraft lore woven into all of it. The stakes and mystery that slowly unfolds is also very well-done.

If the rest of the series continues to be as good as I remember, I may change my rating to 5 stars.

Full disclosure, I read this out loud to my 7 year old Minecraft obsessed son. Minecraft really isn’t in my wheel house but this was actually a really cute and fun book. My son enjoyed the story, was able to keep up with it and enjoyed explaining Minecraft lingo to me. It ends on a cliffhanger and he’s excited to read the second one!

For any kid who loves Minecraft this is a great series. The format is engaging and the illustrations and creativity of the design helps draw kids into the story and move the story along. Not something I'm going to read and re-read but my kids certainly have. I'm starting to doubt that the series will ever get completed though so if that is going to drive your kid crazy you might want to pass on it until there's some sign Cube Kid plans to actually write more.
