The last of the continuum books finishes well. For good or for bad, depending on where you fall, this particular book really takes your suspension of disbelief to an extreme, more than most books in this particular series. At moments, I did just try to hold on for the ride. I enjoyed the story and have really enjoyed these Jack Sigler alone books. I can only wish there will be more to come.
Centurion brings you (and King) up against a different, and more disturbing, enemy. Be prepared to be grossed out as well as haunted by this eerie foe.
Just finished listening to this as I revisit the Chess Team series. I love the books where mythology blends with the story- this one is a perfect example! Centurion is an excellent novella in the Jack Sigler Continuum series. This book was written by Jeremy Robinson and Kent Holloway, and what a dynamic combination that is. This was one intense story. I am not sure that King has been put through as much in the past as he was in this story. I found some parts of the book hard to read, as it really made me feel for King. The characters were great, and I became quite attached to Skilurus. There were some disgusting bugs in the story that made me feel a bit queasy at times, but they certainly were appropriate for the story.
King travels through time on quite possibly his goriest adventure yet (though much of it off screen), against one of the most vile monsters he has ever encountered in this latest installment of the Continuum series of novellas that takes place during the period in the middle of the Chess Team book OMEGA.
As always when either Robinson or Holloway is involved, simply a tremendous book full of action, adventure, and intrigue. Though I gotta admit, my single favorite part of the entire story is the epilogue where they spin the rest of the book on its head and reveal King to be a very famous literary character. Which one? Well, read the tale and find out. :D
You would think as a fan of the Chess Team I would be happy with a Jack Sigler off shoot series. What I am not so much a fan of is when a series goes off to an alternate world/time/dimension. Happy to say this series is done in a way to make this work. Book three of the series (which is sadly at an end) delivers with great writing, superb actions, and a cast of characters that make this story very captivating. My only complaint is that this story gives us three new characters that were written and developed with such depth it is a shame they are bound to just this one book.
Robinson's Continuum series continues (and yes, I know that's really repetitive) with the 3rd book Centurion, and I've gotta say, I think after a trio of these stories, Robinson and co-author J. Kent Holloway are on to something pretty great here.
What I liked about Centurion, especially compared to the previous 2 stories, was it's visceral and gory storyline. Sure, Robinson and his other co-authors have never been afraid to add in a fair amount of blood and guts and other splats of bodily fluids, but here, they really ramped it up. Not only did it give the reader the necessary creepy creaky feeling I think this story deserved, but it also added that much more menace and vileness to the antagonistic villain. Plus, the story, in general, worked well and gave even more humanity to Jack Sigler.
Obviously these 3 novellas are a far cry better than the set of Chesspocalypse shorts that were published a few years back (and that I'm still working through). Unlike those mismatched stories co-written with a bunch of different sub-par to average authors (well, aside from the always talented Sean Ellis), the Contimuum series has benefited not only from the strong main character of King, but also from the consistency of Holloway helping helm the continuing saga for all 3 books.
One caveat however: these books, along with the rest of all the collected Chess Team shenanigans are starting to get old. It's a lot of the same stuff, repeated over and over, just in slightly different locations with slightly different characters. I've been reading a lot of Robinson's bibliography lately so I would wager that could be part of the problem and maybe I need to to take a break from his stuff, but whatever the reason, I think it's time for Robinson to branch out and start something new, something like he did in The Distance, or XOM-B (even if I wasn't a huge fan of that particular novel).
Centurion is the third book in the Jack Sigler Continuum Series by Jeremy Robinson and is co-written with J. Kent Holloway.
Early in the first century A.D., we find King in Britannia, King is a Roman Centurion traveling with a priest and an unusually young man. They are hunters chasing an infected Roman Centurion close to 100 years old.
The infection reminds me of the infection in Jeremy Robinson’s horror Sentinel and Raven novels. (If you haven’t read those, you are in for a treat.) This infection though is centuries earlier in earth’s history and much more powerful. King and his companions, with the addition of a young girl and a female warrior, chase the infected around Britannia and all the way to Stonehenge before figuring out how to kill it.
It was great to be reading about King again. Although the story is short and is over quickly, it’s a good story to add to his millennia existence.
I was given a copy at no cost for the purpose of giving an honest review.
I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. It is a novella in the Jack Sigler series. I really enjoyed this story. It was faced paced and exciting. Jack or King as he is referred to in the stories is stuck in the past and trying to get back to his family. It is a thrilling adventure that has the creepiest monster I have ever encountered in a book series. The characters we meet are interesting to say the least. This is my 1st introduction to this series and I can truly say I am hooked. Couldn't put it down. Can't wait I t to go back for more
Lots of carnage, but the deeper meaning shines through.
If you're a chess team fan, this book is a perfect addition. If you're uncomfortable reading really gory stuff then this is going to be a little off putting . I enjoyed the book because of the way Jeremy Robinson writes and by the evident thought processes that must be going on in his mind when he writes. Well done Mr. Robinson. I get it.
I missed reading Jeremy Robinson. His imagination is remarkable, and you’ll never be disappointed. Once more, he brings to life lifeless monsters and captures a streamline of unexpected narratives, keeping you reading until the very end. One of the best thriller writers I’ve read.
But, I could be bias... I love most all of Jeremy Robinson's books with be exception of his Godzilla type books....I can't get enough of Jack Sigler or his travels.....superb writing in my opinion
Another good story in Kings series. I enjoyed it but there was something about it that I couldn't quite connect with, that stopped me from loving it. Buy still a good short story.
My only complaint is that this may be the last novel in the series. Jeremy Robinson has so many original concepts in his books that my mind is always blown.
This book is no exception. I loved the whole thing. Jeremy can write his faith into a book without sounding preachy or fanatical. I envy him.
Third and final book in the life and times of King in the past, sees him fighting a terrifying parasite like lifeform that causes havoc and destruction across the country. This is a good book, co-written with J. Kent Holloway and is slightly darker and more graphic than the previous books. This has been a good series, but King is better with the Chess team.
Centurion is the third book in the Jack Sigler Continuum series, that brings us short adventures in the life of Jack (or King, as the Chess Team refers to him), as he struggles to return to his time and family.
Centurion is set in Brittania, 102 AD, and we meet a man tormented by demons, using him to destroy as much of humanity as possible. Despite his torment, he tries hard to get far away from civilization so that the damage wielded by the demons is limited.
When our hero, Jack, comes across the centurion, he is unable to sit back and allow the destruction of the villages and communities, and he once again fights to save the lives of the innocent, despite the severe price he has to pay.
One thing you can guarantee about a Jeremy Robinson book - you never know exactly where the adventure will take you. Jack Sigler's travels in the past are at once throughly enjoyable and absolutely heartbreaking.
I struggled in some ways, reading this installment, because Jack is such a beloved character to me, and to see the immense agony (both physical and mental) that he is made to suffer tears at my heart. Of course, I think Jeremy Robinson and co-author, Kent Holloway, get a perverse pleasure out of torturing the poor guy!!
Another pulse-pounding thrill ride, Centurion is an adventure that you don't want to miss.
Loved it! If you like the Chess Team series then you need to read this book! A great story with non stop action. I sincerely hope Jeremy doesn't stop with this one and we have many more to look forward to!
Rating: 4.5 Stars. Let me start by saying that I love the writing of Jeremy Robinson and Kent Holloway, this book isn't an exception. The story flows well and is written excellently, I enjoyed the storyline and the different characters we got to meet. Not overly keen on all the bugs but that's just me. While reading the book I couldn't help but think of The Didymus Contingency. I laughed at moments, sat on the edge of my seat and got emotional. With that being said, maybe I'm just too attached to the characters but I just felt that Jack was put through way too much, I enjoyed the story, I just would have liked it with a few less 'oh, lets kill Jack again' moments. Or maybe I'm just evil and want to watch the others suffer instead. I'd recommend the book to other fans of the series and I'll definitely read more in the series myself, this just wasn't one of my favourites.
5.0 out of 5 starsTravelling through time ByMiss Lynon March 7, 2017 Format: Kindle Edition Jeremy Robinson and Kent Holloway bring us a wonderfully scary new adventure. Jack is a centurion in 102 A.D. Brittania. He is faced with a fellow centurion who is plagued and quite out of control causing increasing horror. It is up to our hero to stop him. What a breathtaking book! I received this book for an honest review.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. There was a little bit of horror mixed into this fast paced story, and it really added to the adventure. I have been anxiously awaiting another installment in the Jack Sigler universe because I love these Continuum novellas! As long as Robinson & Holloway want to write them, I'll continue to buy them.
It’s been a while since I read this book. I forgot how much Jeremy Robinson and J. Kent Holloway put poor Jack through. I really enjoyed seeing Jack in the past and what he got up to. It’s Jack, so you know he is on the side of good and saving the day. This was a fun and entertaining listen. Fans of the Chess Team/ Jack Sigler Thrillers should definitely make sure to pick this one up. Jeffrey Kafer delivered a wonderful and engaging performance.
Just my opinion, but please, if your going to read this book don't eat. Don't think about eating and no snacking. Trust me, you'll thank me later. Other than that, another really good Jack Sigler book.
