O Canada! The opening words of the Canadian national anthem are a fitting exclamation for appreciating the country sometimes called the True North. Canadas untouched wilderness, Arctic animals, and native peoples are all worthy of a shout-out. This read points out to capable young readers what makes Canada special.
32 pages. Country Profiles series. This is a blastoff reader - new series. It has pretty pictures, maps and other visual features. The information is good but is organized a little awkwardly. I had trouble following the logic in it. Attention was paid to how to play a game called curling that seemed a waste of page space. I think overall it is pretty good for a snapshot of the country. It looks a lot like the Exploring Countries series but not quite the same. I would probably buy it, but think it could have been just a touch better. No real problems, but in comparison to other series it is just ok. Recommended Grade 5 and up.
It’s weird reading a book about your own country designed for people from other countries to read, but a good reminder to us that when we read these books about other countries that we are just scraping the surface and learning about a lot of stereotypical things.
