Robinson's Continuum series continues (and yes, I know that's really repetitive) with the 3rd book Centurion, and I've gotta say, I think after a trio of these stories, Robinson and co-author J. Kent Holloway are on to something pretty great here.
What I liked about Centurion, especially compared to the previous 2 stories, was it's visceral and gory storyline. Sure, Robinson and his other co-authors have never been afraid to add in a fair amount of blood and guts and other splats of bodily fluids, but here, they really ramped it up. Not only did it give the reader the necessary creepy creaky feeling I think this story deserved, but it also added that much more menace and vileness to the antagonistic villain. Plus, the story, in general, worked well and gave even more humanity to Jack Sigler.
Obviously these 3 novellas are a far cry better than the set of Chesspocalypse shorts that were published a few years back (and that I'm still working through). Unlike those mismatched stories co-written with a bunch of different sub-par to average authors (well, aside from the always talented Sean Ellis), the Contimuum series has benefited not only from the strong main character of King, but also from the consistency of Holloway helping helm the continuing saga for all 3 books.
One caveat however: these books, along with the rest of all the collected Chess Team shenanigans are starting to get old. It's a lot of the same stuff, repeated over and over, just in slightly different locations with slightly different characters. I've been reading a lot of Robinson's bibliography lately so I would wager that could be part of the problem and maybe I need to to take a break from his stuff, but whatever the reason, I think it's time for Robinson to branch out and start something new, something like he did in The Distance, or XOM-B (even if I wasn't a huge fan of that particular novel).
