Jocelyn 'Joey' Fellows is having a bad day. At 24, she's a college dropout who just got savagely dumped. A friend convinces her to post an ad on a dating website. Joey soon embarks on new adventures, along the way discovering a joy in sexuality, a new sense of life, and a woman who teaches her how to embrace life.
Librarian note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Susan Smith "Smitty" is the author of three published novels. She has been publishing lesbian and queer fiction since 2001, while at the same time writing poems, plays, short stories, and fan fiction.
Don’t be mislead by the title or heading. Yes it was an erotic romance but it was so much more. Joey was being taught some valuable lessons on her journey. It’s worth the time to read.
The reason I read it was that I adored, simply adored and loved and cherished, Susan Smith's previous novels, Of Drag Kings and the Wheel of Fate and Burning Dreams. They had such a rich, layered story tell, with a cast of characters so well developed and so worthy of having their story told and having it told well.
So maybe I came to this with expectations a tad high ;)
The main character is well-developed, a young lesbian searching for her (sexual) identity. Unfortunately, the other characers aren't and the story as a whole feels kind of flat. And the sex wasn't that sexy either, though I'm not sure why. It had all the elements of being hot, but wasn't.
It did provide a bit of entertainment to a sleepless night (stupid full moon) but really isn't memorable. Even a few appearances of the characters from the first two books won't make me keep it.
I'm glad I found this to trade and didn't buy it (which I would have) and will put it up for trade again.
There are lots of fun characters, personalities, and impressive folks in this story, but Joey is the star. We get to live a couple of months out of Joey’s life where so much all becomes clear. She is the one who was ‘Put Away Wet’, has her apartment buddies kind of break her out of a shell she had constructed, and the impressive folks she meets and learns from were simply magnificent. This book was just amazing and totally enjoyable!
Joey, Jocelyn Fellows, is one funny, startling, and irrepressible dude. She is presented to us still under the thumb of her first love who has kicked her out but continues to keep her hand in Joey’s pocket. I loved that she was called Psycho Barbie. Additionally, Joey thinks, acts, and functions as if she were one hundred percent butch dyke. That is a possibility but she is also a great friend and rescues puppies. She eventually gets to see her own depth, capacity for love, and her capability to heal and grow. Joey is a beautiful soul and I would go to the mat for her!
There is a fantastic collection of supporting people in this book. Steve and Kaori, Naomi and Vic, and top of the list is Leela. All of them give Joey something that she needs and eventually Joey recognizes that she needed what they did for her. This all happens along with rib-cracking laughter, buckets of tears, too much to drink, and wacky misadventures. I am kind of a sucker for books that cover such a wide spectrum of feelings and events, but I have begun to understand that only certain authors have this scope and talent. I need to look out for more of Susan Smith’s books!
Naomi, in her tutorial mode, informs Joey after she tells her the whole Psycho Barbie story that she was rode hard and put away wet which seems to be a horseman’s term for riding a horse hard and then not taking care of the horse properly afterwards. It most certainly fits. However, I think no one rides Joey as hard as Joey does. This perfectly delightful tale with emotional ups and downs that support Joey’s growth is a gem. I recommend you take the ride along with her and hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
i enjoyed this book alot i am a bit like joey in the way im a baby dike and my first and only romance with a woman and she broke me badly i made lots of bad choices but im way shy so i guess im better off alone i read this book and i feel like if i found someone like who joey found i would be complete its a good story cant wait for more
The title and the cover make it look like a smutty book. At times, it is, but only because it's about a young butch girl's sexual journey. I enjoyed reading about Joey's journey, and would read another by this author. Perhaps Steve's story?? He sounds like he'd make a fun MC.
