“Reminiscence” is a philosophical novel. If there are fights, duels, devils, dreams and dashing heroes, conflagrations, murders, fancy balls and sudden turns of events, still it remains at heart a philosophical treatise. Herein is examined: classical concepts of the elements, the platonic theory of Knowledge as Memory, and especially the balance of spirit and memory we call Human Identity.
God that was fun to say.

Because it’s true, and yet absurd. “Reminiscence” does indeed dig into dead concepts buried in the western-philosophy cemetery. And who cares? This is an adventure about a girl named Nora finding out who she is, why she dreams bloody dreams, who’s the handsome stranger haunting her, what the hell is the creature who wants her dead. Keep your platonic caves! And give us dreams of ancient loves and loss, a handsome Darcy, a demonic nemesis, and hints of ancient mystery. Oh heck, fine, throw in world-threatening apocalypse, why not.
That was all fun to say, too.

But the world-shelves are stocked with formula romance/mysteries with dark cliché and handsome-devils. “Reminiscence” is on a different shelf. Besides what it slyly tells us about Balance (Statera is an old word for ‘balance scale’; and yes that will be on the test), we have a heroine who is more than a stuffed-bodice in peril. We have Nora.

Nora is no ‘80s style perky I-Save-Myself super-heroine; nor the 21st century retro-princess-needing-rescue. She is a young woman with a kind heart and open mind. She is haunted by déjà vu, terrified by a lurking evil, and drawn to an ancient heart-breaking romance. She attracts protectors, friends you cheer as they stand with her. Still, she wonders who to trust. You wonder too, but it’s her call. And you feel that she’s the right one to decide. Nora has an inner balance keeping her standing in a storm of mad memories, sudden craziness. She must remember who she is. But who Nora is, is more than the sum of her memories. She is on a quest not to remember her identity, but also decide it.

Hmm; that sounded thick.

Nuts. Reminiscence is a fun, adventurous romance. Great heroine, wacky-but-brave friends, suspicious strangers, seriously evil villain. Author Amy Marie’s immediate narrative style finds the balance between adventure, mystery, romance and a vision of a grand, thought-provoking quest. The friends and foes she gathers on the way, make… a profound philosophical essay. Nah, teasing. They make a great story.

Waiting for the sequel in October 2017.

Reminiscence by Amy Marie is the first book in the Statera Saga. Nora Hutchinson's dreams are getting eerie, almost like memories of places she's never been before. When a mysterious man saves her, the story he tells her is beyond insane: he was born centuries ago, and has been cursed to stay in the darkness. She knows in her heart that he's telling the truth. As history relives through the present, Nora must join the charming Darcy in an ancient quest to find a book that holds the answer to saving the world from evil.

Based on the Platonic theory, Reminiscence is a romantic and modern retelling - with an unique and urban fantasy twist - on the classic tale of “Beauty and the Beast.” I enjoyed the meta element with Nora reflecting on her favorite fairytale, “Beauty and the Beast,” comparing it with her own situation. The past plays a huge role, coming back to haunt them as Nora remembers a past not her own, and Darcy is literally from another time. The more Nora learns about the past, the more she's able to address her present, as well as the future. I love how all these little clues come together by the end in a very unique take on good versus evil, light and dark. The characters are charming and compelling, both fitting in as fairytale archetypes, and turning away from the usual stereotypes. Amy Marie weaves romance, humor, destiny, and history into a delightful story perfect for fairytale lovers!

As a good versus evil Young Adult novel, written in first person POV, this story is filled with action and flirts with romance - there's even a Darcy in it!

This book was phenomenal! I read this book in one sitting while home with a sick kid, and was so glad I was able to read it from beginning to end. It would have killed me to have to sit it down and come back when I had time to finish it.

Classic good (white) vs evil (black) with a little bit of grey added in for good measure. Characters were relatable and well formed, while the pace of the book was fast enough to keep you enthralled to turn the page. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new fantasy series to read.

Book 2 is out now and has been ordered from Amazon. I can't wait for it to arrive!

Reminiscence is definitely an urban fantasy worth checking out. It’s not the typical vampire-werewolf story. Instead, the author has woven an intricate tale about a cursed soul struggling to put together the pieces of an ancient prophecy in order to finally vanquish the evil that threatens not only himself and the protagonist, Nora, but the entire world. The story is very well-paced with plenty of action as the intelligent, witty, and selfless Nora works to remember the remnants of a past life and play her part in the prophecy. Looking forward to book two!

What a great story! This book is easy to read yet has a lot of depth for those who choose to read between the lines. This is an epic good versus evil story that takes you on a mysterious journey that intertwines history, suspense, action and touch of romance (another reasons I enjoyed this book is because I consider the romance as mild flirting and clean). You can't help but admire Nora as she is a modern day heroine that amplifies honor, duty and respect in a way that makes it hard to put the book down. The ending certainly is a cliffhanger and I can't wait for book two! I highly recommend this book and although I am 55 years old I think it would appeal to readers of all ages.

Reminiscence is the first book in the Statera Saga. We start off with meeting Nora, a college student who has strange dreams and feelings of deja vu. Her life becomes more than she bargained for when two men enter her life. And don't worry, this isn't the classic love triangle! One of them wants to kill her, and one of them wants more from her than she is prepared to give right now! After all, she is Nora, not Eleanor.

Are you intrigued yet? You should be! There is a bit of everything in this book - drama, suspense, action, adventure, friendships, family, betrayal, curses. It's all here. And it is brilliantly written. There were no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow. The characters all come to life, and are well-rounded. It builds up to a climax, and will definitely leave you wanting more.

A different, great, read and definitely recommended by me.

I'd say its biggest issues stem from an over-informative narrator. You can really tell the narrator expects you to be a brick-head at times, and the dialogue and plot suffer as a result. The premise was good, and I'm interested in whether or not the author understands Voltaire, who is referenced several times. If so, I think that adds an interesting layer to the story. On its relationship to beauty and the beast, I find it succeeds; with regards to its rather on the nose main plot, and naming conventions, I think it's quite horrible. Char is especially terribly named.

Read Like A Fanfic

This book had promise. The premise was good, but the writing was quick and short. It read like a fanfic. The characters lacked depth and came across boring. It was hard to form an attachment to any of them. The story needed way more details and world building. I wanted it to be good, but it was a struggle to finish. :(

I really enjoy reincarnation tales, so this book was a must read for me.

Nora Hutchinson has had odd dreams and glimpses of past lives for as long as she can remember. When she and her adopted sister, Charity, move to Boston to attend college, the dreams and feelings of déjà vu become a frightening daily occurrence. Then two very familiar strangers enter the picture.

Learning her feelings and dreams are more than just that, her life rockets in a direction she never would have guessed possible. She must try to remember her role in the scheme of the universe so she can join others to save it from impending destruction.

I felt this book had a good pace and the characters were enjoyable. I also enjoyed the mythology Marie used and felt she incorporated it well. It's a great take on the classic good versus evil tale.
