Prachtig vormgegeven en gevuld met interessante weetjes, maar voor mij had er meer aandacht aan de tekst besteed mogen worden.

Een boek als een wunderkammer: een wat ordeloze verzameling weetjes en tekstjes. Aardig, maar er had wat meer diepgang en minder herhaling in gemogen. Extra puntje voor de prachtige plaatjes. Puntje eraf weer voor wat meerdere keren voorkwam: een object of schilderij werd uitgebreid en met veel enthousiasme beschreven, maar dan stond er geen plaatje van bij. Ik bedoel maar, "John Gould kan absoluut niet ontbreken in een boek over editions ... Tachtig handgekleurde platen met vogel impressies ... Etc" Ja Pipo, knal er dan even een plaatje bij, kom op! Of er wordt een schitterend met exotische houtsoorten en stenen ingelegd kabinet beschreven, staat er een plaatje bij van een random ander kastje. Gekmakend.
Maar goed, de afbeeldingen die er wel in stonden waren mooi, leuk om dat er ook moderne kunst in het thema in zat.

Interessante geschiedenis over het verzamelen van exotica doorheen de jaren. Mooi gedocumenteerd en rijk geïllustreerd met kleurrijke prenten en foto’s. Sommige zaken worden wat teveel herhaald (ja, we weten na 5 keer dezelfde uitleg echt wel wat een ‘bezoar’ is) maar aangezien de tekst afgewisseld wordt met de illustraties stoort het niet zo erg. Leuk salontafelboek, mocht ik een dergelijk meubelstuk bezitten ...

I found this book in a small independent book-store in northern Germany, where its colorful illustrations of tropical birds and undecidable creatures caught my eye. It was an immensely entertaining and educational read, that I will gladly recommend and re-read time and again.

Thijs Demeulemeester provides a comprehensive oversight of curiosities and their value in terms of personal status, marvelous adventures, historical importance and scientific insights throughout the ages and per region of the world. The book (I read the English version) is beautifully illustrated with lots of pictures, drawings and maps - both ancient an recent. It provides great insights in the practices of collectors, explorers and historians alike.
