This old style story about a young woman with a crippled leg is written with an old fashioned perspective. Real life in the new world was filled with trials, death, and horrors of many things we do not even think of.

It is not laid out in a light manner, but is a good book to teach what the pioneers here faced in the early years of America. When her baby brother lost his mother, and she was trying to keep him alive, it shocked me to hear how the other mother that visited said, "He will likely be dead in a month."
It was just a commonly accepted fact. We take for granted that formula is easily available now, and the knowledge of why newborns died when they were not fed breastmilk or formula was not known to them then.
