Chirp by Ann Everett is a kindle scout book and not one I would normally pick up which is probably my fault. It was an okay read, just not my flavor. Interesting characters, humor, fair plot. I think there are some aspects of the book I would have removed. Not bad for it not my favorite genre.

4.5 stars!

What intrigued me the most about the book and sparked an interest in me was a teaser saying that the main character was a girl who had Asperger's Syndrome. I have been working with this community for almost 20 years and was curious to see if someone could actually pull off the nuances of the population without being cliche and stereotypical, as well as capturing how it could affect a romance. I have to say that I wasn't disappointed at all.

Blaze's quirky nature is simply called being socially awkward throughout the book and the label is never used, which is fine. I had to chuckle at some of her quirks and interpretations of situations because I have seen them in real life. I applauded her for being aware that she interpreted her world differently and for saying as much to others around her and for trying to learn how to navigate in society. I also really liked the peek into her creative mind and processes.

Rance was tougher for me to swallow. He is an ex-con who was wrongfully convicted, but still maintains a tough exterior for protection. He is overcome with attraction for Blaze and wants to protect her, from her past, from society as a whole, and even from himself at times. He can be harsh and does one thing in particular that I don't know if I could forgive him for doing. But he does eventually make up for it all and becomes quite wonderful.

The two of them have a smoldering attraction to each other that takes its time to ignite and grow. If you don't like steamy sex scenes, you'll want to skip this one, or at least fast forward through those parts. (I recommend reading it anyway, and just skipping those pages if you don't like those kinds of scenes.) They go through one heck of a roller coaster ride as they find out more about each other and each other's pasts. Some of their experiences are definitely not an everyday experience for the rest of us, such as being an heiress who has a private detective hot on her trail. But so much of the story felt real to me that I didn't mind suspending a bit of reality. After all, this is fiction, and we want to go to a different world.

There was just so much about this book that I loved that I don't know how to put into words. I hated it when I got interrupted and had to do something else, because I just wanted to sit and read. And I was sad when it ended. I want more of Blaze and Rance!

Delightful modern day fairy tale romance. With two very unlikely central characters /hero and heroine. With such wonderful flow of plot and with just the right amount of heat and funny writing that is Ann Everett. I really enjoyed this offering ,thanks Ann!

so good!
one super weird chic with light hearted tendencies. ocd, quiet, independent, strange, lovely, straight shooter, great cook.
finds,
ex con, guy who drives a motorcycle ( not a biker) loves his gran, loves his brothers, regular dude, loves to eat grans food...
we get,
a refreshing look at a overwhelmed genre!
We get right to it with little history about the characters so, jail time and hiding aren't big reveals and are briefly explained which i found nice. Why? because the author allows us to put pieces together and doesnt dumb it down with excessive explaining, reasoning, recaps, history, drama etc. I appreciated that greatly.
there is no, thankfully, misunderstanding that can be chapters long to a resolution; because Chirp has a question she will ask. not skirting issues here!
R (because his name is the worst thing about this book) has been in jail too long to waste time on misunderstandings these two have a refreshing honest relationship that was a great read!
"Rance" that name better be made up!
he is a nice guy, just out of practice
Chirp is an artist with a secret but their love story is so appealing and natural. i found myself laughing out loud.

I look forward to more by this writer, great style of characters, loved it.

I would however like it if the writer could stop having the male character start every sentence with "hell". "ah hell", "hell,...."
hell this and hell that got real annoying and the female characters not as bad but "heck" was the same over used word.
And seriously need to get better names for the characters...Rance? Blaze? come on!

While reading the book, I had only 2 thoughts - Wicked characters and it's one of those books!

By that, I mean it's the kind of book I can reread anytime and any number of times. It was a bit different from other books of the author. For one, it was a bit longer. That's how I felt when I was reading it. Each scene was detailed and vivid. Another is that it was a bit more graphic on details.

The author has done a great job of pairing an ex con with a mouthy virgin. Oh my! I love the couple! Where do I start? Rance is such a bad boy with a good heart. He comes with a big chip on his shoulder. But then life happened and so I can forgive his attitude. He has a huge heart and that shows clearly from the beginning in his interactions with Blaze. As for Blaze, wow, a totally unfiltered gal who spouts what comes to mind at all times. This makes for a very interesting few situations. There were places where I blurted out a few laughs. And that's what endears this book to me!

The story itself isn't too complicated. It's a bit straight forward but what makes it special are the characters. In addition to Rance and Blaze, I loved meeting Rance's brothers and their loves. Yeah they kind of find their own girls in this book. It all makes for a complementary side story. It adds to the charm of the small town story and sky rockets the romance vibe.

Speaking of romance, the heat was bit higher than compared to the author's other works. That was kind of expected because of Rance. The romance was hard and slow especially on Rance's part. He is so stubborn! Argh! I felt Blaze could have prolonged the ending a bit for Rance. Ha I would have loved to see him groveling a bit more.

I recommend this book to romance readers with a penchant for quirky characters.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes.

My one line review : A set of quirky characters and an adamant romance.

My rating : 5/5

My reread factor : 4/5

LOVED this book! This started out interesting and got even more so as I read along the pages. I loved Blaze and all she did. The little notes she left with her patrons after she was finished with their makeup were fantastic. Very creative. I really liked the how and why of her ending up in Bluebird. Rance sure was shocked to find her at his grandmother's place. His reaction and growing adoration for the little things she did was fun. I liked when 'it' finally hit him. I really liked her friends and the closeness they shared, even though she had kept a few things from them. She was never an entitled brat, which I dearly loved. The paint can could have been a complete disaster. Thankfully, Rance is an honest one. I was interested in his back story. His grandma always believed in him. It was fun that Blaze knew the man from her stories. I really enjoyed how she had grown to love his grandma and did many of the special things. Would've loved to have seen that mural! The dog was a great addition after the cats were gone. I like that Rance had checked on them at the shelter/ vet. My biggest, most favorite part of this book was the reason behind the title. That made me melt inside...a puddle of emotional goo. The framed note at her bedside also held a special meaning for me.

3 stars... the progression from the hero being a jerk to not being a jerk was sorta outta the blue, imo. I didn't know what brought it one, so it didn't really work for me. And I wish we'd had a few flashbacks ( or maybe just a prologue) of the Heroes time in prison, and the heroines time with her father. And imo there were a few side bits of the book that could've been taken out.

Altogether not a bad read though.

Good romance

I enjoyed Blaze, her secrets, her quirks and her directness. The hero was aloof, tough, guarded but no match for our leading lady. There was great chemistry, sizzling sex and intense push and pull.

A socially akward heiress and an ex-con, a recipe for an interesting read. I actually enjoyed this book immensely. The premise was excellent and the characterisation was very good and so funny in places! Chirp kept me turning the pages and wondering what will happen next.

I truly hope that there will be more books from Bluebird , Texas.
