Exile can be a frightening prospect. Like the Israelites in Babylon, Christians today may feel they are in unfamiliar territory, surrounded by a culture with customs and practices foreign to their faith. In these times of dislocation and powerlessness, God wants to help his people experience anew the possibilities of covenantal faithfulness. In Embracing Exile, T. Scott Daniels invites the church to embrace this modern time of "exile" and to seize this unique opportunity to be a blessing to the culture around us.
As a millennial pastor, this book deserves a resounding "YES!" So refreshing, honest, and real. Highly recommend to anyone wondering how to preach to and do ministry with the next generation without demeaning or belittling their post-Christian culture. I really appreciated how hopeful and pragmatic each of these themes were. Finally, this is someone who understands our culture without issuing a cry to return to the American church's "glory days," which in many ways weren't all too glorious. I am extremely hopeful about what God is going to do as we enter into a phase of exile.
It was okay. I appreciate and mostly agree with the premise. For a short book it felt like a bit of a slog. The last two or three chapters were the best part of the book.
I don’t know when a book in this category has convicted me so completely. The premise is that we try to ignore the fact that we are “exiles” in our culture. The customs, expectations, and practices of our culture don’t help us live the life we are called to live as Christians. With a fresh voice dedicated to an old message, this small book has made me review my expectations, desires, and underlying presuppositions to reconnect more passionately to God’s desire that we be His best advertisement for the life that offers hope and joy found nowhere else.
This book is not for easy reading. But if you, or your church, are going through a time of "exile," this is a fabulous book. I always looked at the bad things about being in exile and did not see the work that God did with those that were in exile. From a pastor's perspective, this is a good read for any church board, even if you and your church are doing well.
Such a great, paradigm shifting book. Uplifting, yet convicting. Honest, yet encouraging. A must read for anyone in the church, especially for those of us who struggle with the "post-christian" shift of our culture.
This book was written from a Pastor's heart. I loved it so much that I preached it as a series. Great practical insights to help us embrace the spiritual exile that we live through in this post modern world. It took my congregation and me to deeper levels in our faith walk with Jesus Christ. There is a DVD driven kit you can buy to teach or preach this amazing book.
