Love is possible when the spirits move you. Skinwalker Raven Walkingman is the number one cowboy at the Darque and Knight rodeo, at the top of his game. He has his animal spirit guides, good friends, and a fancy trailer. Raven prefers casual relationships, so when Rocket starts talking mates as shifters do, Raven pulls up the stakes. He doesn’t need to fall for a ragtag cheetah. Cat shifter Rocket is fast, but he only has so many lives left, and he spends more time injured than not. He’s the worst rider in the Darque and Knight rodeo. Raven’s spirit guides adore him, though, and are more than happy to support him in his work and pursuit of Raven. Raven and Rocket seem like an unlikely match, and sometimes it takes an otherworldly guide to make it right. This is a previously published book. The publisher has changed.

Rating: 4 stars I somehow missed this book when I started the series. I’m really glad I went back and picked it up. I really enjoyed it. I really loved Rocket and felt for him throughout the book. Raven was an okay character but I thought him to be a bit arrogant and full of himself at times. All in all, a highly enjoyable addition to the series.
Unlikely matings may be a lot of work, and can take a lot of time before things are solved, but they do make for the best results. In the world of Darque and Knight, otherwise known as the supernatural rodeo, werewolves, cat and other shifters, vampires, ghost riders – to name but a few – are all hidden by special magick so the humans don’t notice something otherworldly is going on. In this fourth story the focus is on two loners who find out they are made for each other. Rocket is one of the lowest men on the rodeo’s totem pole, and Raven is the king of the cowboys, situated at the very top. They fall for each other really quickly, but neither of them does things the easy way. So it takes them a while to get their act together – much to their disadvantage.
Rocket is a cheetah shifter who is meant to be part of a group of males. He is an extremely fast runner but he is not very good at any of the rodeo events and struggles to earn enough money to pay for his food and gas. He also believes he needs to earn his place and hates to accept charity – even Raven is rebuffed when he tries to be kind. The one thing Rocket knows is that Raven is his mate – but Raven is a player and Rocket can’t see how a loser like him could ever prove worthy of someone like Raven.
Raven is a spiritwalker and he has access to the abilities of several of nature’s spirits when he needs their help. So the spirit of the bear adds to his strength, the hawk helps him see better, the owl provides patience and wisdom, etc. I think this is a really cool concept. But Raven doesn’t want to commit to one man and even though he feels very drawn to Rocket, and his spirits want him to bond with the slight cheetah shifter, he resists. And when the spirits start talking to Rocket, Raven loses it because he thinks Rocket stole them from him and almost loses the best thing that ever happened to him.
If you like stories about men who have to overcome their own nature if they want to be together, if unlikely matings are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is funny, a little angsty, and very hot, then you will probably like this novella.

Oh what a sweet tale. A young, down on his luck, cheetah shifter falls hard for the King of the Rodeo. The king is a spirit shifter. And while he can't actually shift into the animals that inhabit him, he utilizes their strengths to stay on top in the rodeo game. Raven doesn't want a mate, but the precious, under fed, always hurting, Rocket, brings out all his protective instincts. This surprise!-he's-our-mate story is just lovely.
This is part of a connected universe and characters from other stories go in and out. So there is history and as long as you believe in insta-love and fated mates, you will like this one. Rocket is the little engine that could so I was happy he got his HEA. It was due to the ultimate sacrifice and that had me sniffling in the best way. Short, sad, but sweet.
This was a good quick read. I found Raven to be a little cocky and self absorbed but not a bad guy; to me, it seemed that his reluctance came from being scared of change. I hate that Rocket felt like he had to be better in order to be Raven's mate, but glad with how it ended.
I am really enjoying this series. I found supernatural rodeo a great place to visit. I love stories about the underdog, and cheetah shifter may know his own mind. He just need help feeling worthy. This tale had great humor and hot lovemaking.
Really well done! I liked this story a lot. I was actually surprised by the turns this one took. Way to go! This one burst through some of my preconceived notions of the genre and provided a real adventure in the shifter romance space.
I like that the books are short and each one features a new couple. Each book can be read as a standalone but to fully enjoy the series and appearances of characters from other books, I think it is best to start from book one.
Rocket and Raven, they fit together more than you would think. But Rocket feels like he has to earn his way in. He will learn that the Midnight Rodeo takes care of their own.
It was great to see Raven and Rocket together. It also made me laugh at how the spirits dealt with Raven. That type of inner payback is always funny in mating stories.
