Read for sermon series on Matthew.

Good solid commentary. During my sermon prep, it was often the final one I read, and yet Carson often still had fresh insights that were helpful to me.

Carson's revised work on Matthew in this commentary makes sense of many scholarly debates in the text of Matthew for the preacher/exegete. I believe this commentary would be helpful to students of Scripture at any stage, but the beginner will need to learn what debates and arguments to skim if they begin to get overwhelmed. For a commentary in a multi-volume series Carson's work is surprisingly robust as a I read it alongside France's work in NICNT. I am always thankful for Carson's perspective on Scripture, he seeks to be faithful to God's Word and encourages thoughtful engagement with the text. He truly is a gift to the Lord's church.

My rating should not be seen as a reflection on the quality of the commentary, which I suspect is very good. Rather, as a layman, I found the book to be nearly unreadable. The text was filled with so many citations in parentheses, rather than footnotes or end notes, that it was next to impossible to get into any kind of flow with the text. There was also way more minutia than I, as a layman, was interested in reading. My guess is that this is a great resource for professional theologians and biblical scholars, but it is definitely not layman friendly.

Matthew - step by step helpful commentary

I found this commentary, which I normally prefer in Logos format, quite readable in Kindle format. The work by D.A. Carson and team are clearly of the best and do yourself a favour and work through Matthew and you will be much richer for the experience. Also read the D.A. Carson commentary on the Gospel of John in PNTC range and you'll be well equipped.

Carson's commentary on Matthew was very helpful when preparing my sermon on Matt. 28:16-20. Readable, clear, and scholarly. Carson has become one of my favorite theologians to read.

A great commentary. This is a must for any preacher working through Matthew. The serious bible student or bible study teacher would benefit much from it.
