Dbut du XXe sicle, quelque part en Prusse. Ludwig et Oswald von Schlitt sont deux frres que tout oppose et au destin tout trac : seuls garants de l'honneur de leur nom, ils sont envoys l'cole des cadets o ils apprennent servir leur roi, l'impopulaire Guillaume II, et perptuent ainsi la tradition de cette famille o l'on est cavalier de pre en fils. Mais Ludwig, lui, n'a d'yeux que pour la fameuse mitrailleuse Maxim, arme diabolique dont il dcle les failles et perce le mystre, jusqu' succomber sa fascination - et changer le cours de l'histoire.

Encore une pépite visuelle, le trait est laché, sublime, les jeux d’aplat et de vide sont intelligents et magnifiques. Le ton est acide, l’humour est noir, le seul défaut ? La fin qui arrive comme un cheveux sur la soupe ! Mais sinon, foncez !

Toen ik deze in de bibliotheek zag was ik erg enthousiast, en toen begon ik gisteren met lezen, en ik had echt moeite er mee. Ik wilde het liefst het boek dichtdoen en er niet meer naar kijken.
Dat ligt deels aan het verhaal (ook al was het wel interessant op punten), maar ook zeker aan Oswald (wat een *insert wat gemene woordjes hier*. Ook hier zie je weer dat er iets heftigs moet gebeuren eer iemand eens die stok uit zijn kont haalt). Dan is er nog het einde... wat daar gebeurde was iets te veel en paste totaal niet bij het verhaal en ik had ook medelijden met de hoofdpersoon.
Oh, en misschien moet de illustrator ook de gezichten van omstanders tekenen? Want het zag er hilarisch uit om een smiley face te zien. Vooral tijdens heftige stukjes lag ik gewoon dubbel vanwege die gezichtjes. Sorry, ik kan het niet helpen. :P

It’s a moody Bildungsroman about a young noble in declining Prussia; his father is a war hero but has only one leg, his mother has been ill for years, the servants are leaving, the castle is falling down, and his older brother is just mean. I thought the art was evocative and well executed, and the way in which the faces of everyone other than the protagonists is blurred out is a nice focussing gimmick, but there didn’t really seem to be much happening in terms of plot.

Super magnificent illustrating style, flat but with very much sense of depth in what seems to be a combination of watercolour and linopress. Narrative was quite ok.

Fantastische stijl. Werkelijk prachtige panels waar je lang naar kunt kijken al blinken ze vaak uit in eenvoud en minimalisme.

Een erg mooi getekende graphic novel over het leven in het Pruisische rijk. Ik vond het een mooie graphic novel, maar ik miste helaas een beetje diepgang.

Prachtig getekend. In het begin is het een beetje moeilijk te volgen. En het is echt verrassend.
