GAPS Diet

I saw this book and wondered what it could be about. I'm glad I picked it up because I really want to start eating better and take good care of my body. After all, it's the only one I have. I know to eat fruits and vegetables and lean protein but I didn't know about eating fermented foods. They are not my favorite so this is something I will have to work on. I have a niece who is a yoga instructor and when she was recently down visiting her family, her Mom served all kinds of pickled foods and mentioned how her daughter was into that kind of food. It certainly wasn't appealing to me but after reading this book, I understand why she ate like that. Also, I don't know if I can afford the organic foods but will do the best I can. I also don't know if I have time to create all the staples like broths and condiments but I figure I can start with the less healthy pre-packaged items and work towards making my own. I'm sure this review has run a bit long and goes into my own life and issues a bit too much but what I want to say is this book has come into my life at the right time and while it may be a challenge to change my eating habits, I do want to and I know this book will help me. Great advice and recipes!

I am doing this diet to help with diverticulitis which I have been suffering from. I am trying the recipes slowly but feel better already knowing I am doing this for myself.

It’s safe to say that I can spend hours online searching for different (healthier) ways to tackle my autoimmune disorders (yes, plural) as well as feel better in areas (gut, fatigue, pain). The GAPS diet comes up consistently on thousands upon thousands of web pages. So finding a book that helps to serve as a starter and has tasty recipes is a win-win for me.

What’s in this book. Two chapters that cover the hows and guidelines followed by four chapters with staple food recipes, breakfasts, main dishes, and sides and snacks. Easy peasy.

Sadly, chapter 2 does an excellent job of defining what’s okay to eat and what isn’t. And I so love many of the foods on the avoid list. Many. Not all. Many.

Thankfully, I LOVE most of the foods in the acceptable lists (fruit, veggies, fish).

Starting with the staples in chapter 3. Love love love the breakout of the different types of bone broth with super simple instructions. I made the chicken, beef, fish and veggie broths and they are sooooo good. Wish I had room in the freezer to make in bulk. Also a huge fan of the probiotic-rich food recipes with the exception that I don’t put anything sweet in my kimchi. I’ve yet to try the nut butter but the recipe looks simple and tasty as does the coconut butter. Admittedly, might have trouble with moderation with those. The main dish and sides that I tried were also good and gave me options for things to make with the bone broth. With some of the soups/stews, I ended up cooking them in the slow cooker as it was easier for me, and they came out just fine.

Overall, I like this book. It isn’t overwhelming, the info is valuable, and the recipes were tasty.
