A talented but troubled ER doctor will not give up until her patient's mysterious death is explained. Laura Valorian is an emergency room physician who, because of severe emotional trauma after a missed diagnosis, vows to perfect her diagnostic skills and, as a result, detects subtle evidence of foul play in a surgeon who is declared dead in her ER. When she cannot let go of her suspicions and eventually convinces a private investigator of the possibility of a crime, she begins a relentless quest for suspects and evidence. Now, with angry suspects to deal with, an attempt on her own life, and her struggle with personal demons, she must fight to salvage her self-respect and her professional reputation while pursuing her mission to get at the truth.
Steven Gossington is an emergency room physician with over 30 years of patient care experience. He was an academic professor in emergency medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City for 11 years, and he published 20 book chapters and medical articles of original research. Thank you to Hidden Gems for the free copy of The Diagnosis Is Murder in exchange for my honest book review!
What an interesting book. We meet Laura Valorian, an ER doctor, who seems to be carrying some baggage with her. When it comes to child abuse cases, Dr. Valorian tends to lose her cool and go overboard. This all stems from her once missing a case of child abuse in the ER and that child goes on to later die. As the story progresses she works through her issues with this.
The characters throughout this mystery get introduced to us one at a time. This is much appreciated so you are not overwhelmed at the beginning with a ton of characters to remember. Gossington builds the characters slowly, but, does not neglect their development.
A fellow colleague at the hospital comes in unresponsive to the ER. It is a conceited surgeon and he unfortunately succumbs to his “heart attack” and dies. Dr. Valorian has a gut feeling that he did not die of natural causes and ends up doing some gutsy private investigation work. Along the way she connects with Alec, a private investigator, who decides to help her out free of charge. They set forth together and narrow down the potential list of suspects and look for possible motives.
Throughout the story I felt like there were mini stories taking place as well. Dr. Valorian had a medical student intern in the ER and he came with his own baggage and story. Alec also comes with baggage and his own story too. They all intertwined nicely and just when I thought the story was over, it wasn’t. The little stories ended up combining to fill in the larger story and kept the book going. I was glad because I was not quite ready end to see the end of Dr. Valorian.
This is book one and I am disappointed there is no book two yet, Dr. Valorian is a very enjoyable character. It was a fun, light read and kept my attention with the twists and turns. I also could tell that Gossington has experience working in the ER as those little details shined through in this book. I also appreciated that this book was not overrun with medical terminology that a common person, such as myself, would have a hard time understanding. Sometimes doctors get a little ahead of themselves (and show off with fancy words) when they write a book, however, Gossington does not and this attributes to the book being a great read!
I am giving this book 4 stars. I enjoyed the plot and the ending was satisfying. I am hoping that there will be a book two and we will see even more character development with Dr. Valorian and Alec, and I will be the first in line to buy book two, you can bet your bottom dollar on that one!
Several random early chapters were in the POV of characters other than Dr. Valorian. Their ‘out of the blue’ appearance broke up the flow of the story just as I was settling in with the main character. The continued appearance of those other POV chapters later in the book – especially when the POV character was one who had not had his or her ‘own’ chapter before – was equally jarring.
Some writing was on the ‘See Spot. See Spot run. Run, Spot, Run.’ level. And Gossington wasted too many words describing furnishings in every room. Do we really need to know the color and pattern of upholstery on every chair and the contents of every picture in every room?
Gossington also plays tour guide – They took This Street past This Place to That Street past That Park to That Other Place. – every time he has his characters going any place. People familiar with Washington, DC, don’t need that information because they already know it. And for people who have never been to DC (like me), the information doesn’t mean anything unless I’m following their travels on a map – and I have no desire or intention to do that. So, he could have dropped all of that, just told us where the characters were going.
Gossington has two main storylines running through this novel. Too often an author will shortchange one or the other along the way, but Gossington does a good job of developing both equally throughout the book. He did have one twist near the end, however, that was a thorough surprise because he established no basis for it earlier in the book.
Gossington also did something too few authors do these days: He didn’t have his two main characters fall into bed almost immediately. He is showing them in a growing relationship.
Still, this book was good enough that I want to read more if Gossington creates a series.
Dr Laura Valorian is a busy ER doctor, who cannot forget about a missed diagnosis which she feels responsible for, that had a tragic ending. This has left her emotionally traumatised and is something she swears to herself, she will never miss or allow to be overlooked ever again. She works harder making sure her diagnostic skills are top notch and her work is without fault.
She gets thrown when a similar situation comes into the ER and this brings about some flashbacks of the earlier case and distract her somewhat from her work. She also has thoughts of foul play in the death of a surgeon, declared dead in her ER. No-one else can see what she does and it doesn’t help matters that her behaviour has started to become somewhat erratic, since the similar case of possible child abuse comes through the ER. The nurses are noticing her different moods and behaviour.
Laura has to hire a private investigator to try and find evidence of foul play and proof of who the suspects are. Now she has an attempt made on her life, she is struggling with her own emotions, angry suspects and has to try and keep her reputation as a doctor and her own self-belief.
A good mix of real ER situations and a case of abuse and another of murder. All to be investigated. Any entry to the ER is a trauma for the patient and the doctors’ job is to investigate the circumstances of the illness or injury and come to a conclusion. I enjoyed this read. Some of the chapters were awkward, with different points of view, leading the story. But, there are a lot of authors using this tool to tell a story now and you can get used to it fairly quickly.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
After a missed diagnosis of one of her patients leaves Dr. Laura Valorian emotionally traumatized, she vows to perfect her diagnostic skills. Now working as an emergency room physician, she has honed in on her skills and makes sure that nothing gets passed her. When a surgeon of the hospital is brought into the ER and dies of what is deemed a heart attack, Laura doesn’t believe the diagnosis. She believes the doctor met with foul play and tries to convince a private investigator to help her solve the crime.
Unlike some medical suspense books, this did not have you skipping through pages of endless medical jargon and long-winded diagnostics (a real plus for me). I instantly connected with Laura and felt her pain as she tried to struggle with overcoming her past demons. Her character was multidimensional and very well thought out by the author. I also enjoyed that the book had two stories going on at once and they perfectly intertwined together culminating with a surprise ending.
I really enjoyed the book and felt it had the right combination of mystery, suspense, intrigue, and hints of a potential romance.
I was really wanting a good murder mystery to read with this one drawing my attention. Sorry but not ever heard of author before but it didn't matter I was looking at the story. Laura takes you in right away with her as she is a ER doc that will have her time going fast. It would seem too she has a knack about things too. She also has a nose for when things are not right which will happen in this one with a death of a fellow doc. From there you are already caught up in the intrigue because this author knows how to pick your interest and capture your attention. As other characters enter the picture this is a well rounded grabbing mystery that really is hitting the spot and satisfying my craving. It will also keep you on your toes especially with the help of two characters-Eric and Alex. A surprise or two will also jump out making this so thrilling. By the time this is wrapped up with it solved or caught you will elated with the excellent choice.
I enjoyed this book and would read another if this becomes a series. There were some parts of the story that were not believable but I just accepted it for what it was. Dr Laura Valorian works in the ER and is haunted by a child that she sent back home to an abusive situation. She vows never to allow this happen again. This is an underlying situation that allows us insight into the doctor’s character. The main story revolves around another physician who’s death looks more like murder than a heart issue. Dr. Laura just can’t get past the circumstance and condition of the physician’s body. She connects and works with a former policeman, now PI, Alec Dupree. With the help of a police friend, Laura and Alec solve the murder. The underlying stories set up in this book seems to point to a nice series about Dr Laura and her move into forensic medicine.
I received this book from the author and I am voluntary providing an honest review of this book. This is a medical mystery that has many twists and turns. The story is fairly fast paced and the author brings in many interesting characters into the picture. I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end and will definitely read other books from this author. This is a quick read with a good storyline.
This story is about an emergency doctor, Dr. Laura Valorian, who suspects that one of the hospital’s doctors has been murdered. Doctor Preswick was brought into the emergency room and was non responsive. Although the autopsy doesn’t show anything suspicious, she was determined to find the real cause of his death. She meets some interesting characters during her investigation and several suspects are considered to be the killer. She found a supporter who was willing to help her solve this case. Will she put her life on the line to solve this mystery?
Loved the mystery and science behind this book. I found this book to be rather well-written and especially appreciated the medical aspects being presented to the reader in a way that could be easily understood, without seeming pretentious or making the reader feel talked down to. The fact the author has an extensive medical background definitely adds to the believability of the story as the plot unfolds. I liked that there were several mysteries rolled into one book; it definitely kept me guessing. I do wish a little light had been shed on why Laura had the inner demons she did, aside from the one misdiagnosis. It felt as if it had to predate that. Perhaps it'll be further explained in the next book.
I signed up to Mr Gossington's mailing list and received this as a free gift. I love to check out new authors. An ER doctor as the main character intrigued me. It only took a few pages for me to be sucked right in. Laura is a fresh main character who is very human. I love the characters. I really enjoyed the story and the character interaction. I am looking forward to Laura and Alec's next adventure.
I really liked this book. It was really a different plot that the one I usually read. I look forward to the next one. When they wound up the first mystery, I thought there might be more, thankfully there was. I liked the way he brought all the loose ends together in the end. It was also nice not to have the f****bomb on every other page.
None of the main characters appealed to me -- no dislike either. I wouldn't want Laura to be my emergency room doctor. She has issues that as a doctor she should have long since dealt with. Her surname bothers me too. Sorry, this one just fell flat with me.
Very good mystery with good insight into emergency roo nd and how they function. As a retired nurse it was nice to see the accuracy of life in a hospital ER. Surprise ending added to my enjoyment of the book.
Interesting book and was definitely hard to put down. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars, is it jumped around between characters right in the middle of a chapter. ''I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.”
I really enjoyed this read. There were some times when the characters were not to easy to follow because there were so many characters. I look forward to more books from this author.
As someone who has worked in healthcare for over 40 years, I have to say this ED doctor is not believable. All in all though I will also add that the author did a pretty good job of weaving together this mystery.
This is a medical murder/mystery story. It starts off with Dr. Laura Valorian missing the signs and symptoms of child abuse on a 4 year old girl. The girl was brought to the hospital a few months earlier, and now is brought in without a pulse and not breathing. She dies. Dr. Valorian is an Emergency Room or ER doctor. She also has some demons of her own that flair up from time to time when it comes to abuse to children. As the story continues, there is a doctor Roderick Preswick that is brought in non responsive to treatment. Laura had just seen him earlier in her shift that very day. Something doesn't feel right with his death. Laura decides to 'look into it" on her own and things get out of hand. Her friend ex-detective Alec Dupree is helping her out and they get involved with each other and another problem arises with that. Can Laura and Alec figure out what actually happened to Roderick Preswick and who killed him? What will trouble with their relationship cause? Read the story to find out. I received a copy of this book from AuthorsXPromotion and voluntarily chose to review it.
This is the first book I've read from this author. It is totally gripping. I started it Feb 22 and cannot put it down. I love medical mysteries and the plot of this book is just what I was looking for. A romantic mystery with a twist. I will write more when I'm finished. I finished this s book on March 6, 2017. I love a good medical mystery. This was one of those books that was hard to put down. I would recommend this to anyone that loves medical mysteries with a bit of romance.
I love murder mysteries with a medical twist and for the most part, this is as good as others.
Dr. Laura Valorian is an ER doctor and her assigned medical student is Derek Hollister. Her shifts are long but varied. She carries the fear that she will again not diagnose a child that is being abused. Having happened once, she lives in fear of it happening again. Derek Hollister is working alongside her for his medical rotation and they get along well.
Late one night and paramedics arrive with a man who is not breathing. The ER takes over the CPR but despite many attempts they cannot resuscitate him. Laura realises that she recognises him as Dr Roderick Preswick, a well-known surgeon who she has had run-ins with before. However, there is something about him that doesn't ring true. Dying from a heart attack should not leave you with pinpoint pupils.
Laura contacts a friend, Alec, who used to be a policeman and now is a private investigator. She shares her concerns and asks for his help in finding out what happened.
We are then introduced to a lot of characters, which can be confusing. The late Dr's wife, his mistress and her boyfriend and anyone who may be interested in ending this man's life.
I recognise that the research done for this novel is exemplary, but there are a couple of things that do not ring true.
Firstly, Laura spends a lot of her spare time either running or just walking about in the area. She has a beloved dog who appears to never be taken out for a walk.
She understandable has issues when she treats a child and fears missing signs of abuse. One one occasion she is about the assault a mother but is restrained by Derek and nurses. Why is a volatile Doctor allowed to practice medicine in this environment?
Overall this is a good read and I recommend it as such to murder mystery fans.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased. My thanks to the author for giving me this opportunity.
I really enjoyed this book, and it is refreshing to have an emergency doctor as the amateur sleuth. The plot line is excellent, with several potential suspects all of whom are given realistic back stories and motives for the murder. The medical scenes are unsurprisingly very evocative and convincingly written, given that the author has worked as an emergency doctor for many years. The characters, both the main protagonists and the secondary ones, are all very well developed and believable and there are just enough twists to the reader guessing how the story will end, I also liked the subplots intertwined into the overall story. However there is one issue with the book, and that is the amount of extraneous descriptive text, which detracted from the story and slowed the pace down considerably, with some fairly ruthless editing this book would be a definite 5 star work. I should point out that I voluntarily reviewed this book from a copy supplied at no charge by the publisher.
THE DIAGNOSIS is MURDER by Steven Gosssington.. A new author, for me, and he delivers a powerful story. Laura an emergency Dr, who gave the wrong diagnosis, four months earlier, now has to face herself, that a. child is gone. She plans to perfect her skill so this doesn't happen again. What happens when her nemesis Dr.Preswick is brought in, and no reason is found. to his unexplained and unexpected death. He was found outside a bar, but no other clues. The case, bothers Laurie, can she find the reason, even when the autopsies didn't. Great plot, that will have you guessing. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
An ER doctor with anger issues, an ME with bipolar disorder, and an intern with grief and revenge issues...makes me question the medical personnel at that hospital. I had a difficult time engaging with the book at first. It felt choppy and the characters too unrelatable. However, the more I read the more I wanted to read. It was a good mystery, with many characters that have something to gain and lose by being the killer. Overall, I enjoyed the book. I would read another in this series.
Kindle Unlimited, interestingly odd all around in the one book, the other one well hospitals and doctors are weird some more than others. Noticed a 3 star that said ''good but not agatha christie'' and my thoughts were duh and then go read agatha christie.Christie today would be in mystery/cozy. Sure could maybe be tightened up in places, what book couldn't, according to each reviewer's personal preferences.Read them back to back, as writer only has the 2 out, so far, but that and the stars should tell you something. I believe the writer has a medical background, but didn't overly notice any confusing medical terms so that was nice too.
The Diagnosis is Murder (A Dr. Valorian Mystery Book 1) Fractured Eden
I thought this was a great mystery about an emergency room doctor who is extremely critical of all her decisions and examinations of patients since she was traumatized by a mis-diagnosis early in her career. This allows her to detect subtle evidence of foul play whe a fellow surgeon turns up dead in the ER. I found it very interesting that the author was an ER doctor and it helped make the writing extremely real and engrossing. Overall, it was a great read. There was great character and plot developement and the author kept you engrossed in the story until the end. It's very cool that this is the first book in a new series and I look forward to getting to know Dr. Laura Valorian more.
