RG Veda Omnibus #2

RG Veda Omnibus Volume 2

Rate this book
RG Veda, pronounced Rig Veda, is based on the classic Indian saga of the same name. Ashura has now placed trust in Kujaku, known for many lies, to tell the truth and lead them to the fabled Ice Castle in search of Yasha, magicked away in a cloud of butterflies! But there are many strange fortresses in the realms of the gods, and the Sky Castle also is a place of darkness, shrouded in sorrow by the grief of the Lady Karura for her sister. And even a sanctuary in the clouds is no safe refuge to one hoping for revenge on the usurper of the heavens, Taishakuten...

CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

Warnings: violence and killings, mentions of attempted infanticide

As Yasha has been taken captive, Ashura and the others try to get to him while being under attack from Vahyu and his men. Kujaku performs Ashura's ascension with the sword to help him reach Yasha, but it also unveils the 'other' Ashura. Even so, our regular Ashura is lamenting over feeling unwanted, about how his mother tried to kill him, but by the end, he finds a purpose in protecting Yasha. Meanwhile, Lady Karura is still in shock and grief, thinking how much she wants revenge against Taishakuten, and how much is she willing to risk her own clan to do so. Queen Kendappa gets a fair share of the PoV in this volume, as she is the one to revive Karura, as well as witness many events happening in Zenmi palace. That general's daughter doesn't know who she is messing with, because I feel Kendappa may very well be the fourth General whose identity is secret. Speaking of secret identities, Kujaku is mystery still, and so are his motives. He seems to like Ashura and even more to tease Yasha, but Ryuu is right - his appearances and disappearances are weird. Also another character's motives slowly being hinted at is Taishakuten himself - who has something mysterious to protect with his tight tyrant fist. This whole volume is filled with a lot of mini-storylines and flashbacks, so we get to know the characters better. I am loving the whole thing, with the emotional arcs, with the sibling angels and everything so far.

know the ending by osmosis at this point but by god are they taking me there. I've never even read this series before but I can see all the buttons CLAMP specifically installed in me already forming

RG Veda omnibus vol 2 is just as epic and full of tragic characters as the first one. And amazingly drawn, details on characters' outfits, breathtaking locations, soulful eyes... We get also a lot of background for various characters, huge battle scenes and many tears. Ashura's back-and-forth with his "it's my fault" mantra gets a bit repetitive but it's a minor thing.
And: Lady Kendappa is the best lady. ♥
Absolutely worth reading.

For an adventure/battle manga, this delivers and I love the art. It's definitely not a deep story, and I find it hard to keep some of the less featured characters straight. It's hard to get attached to any of them because they lack depth, but it doesn't make the push toward the final battle any less exciting either.

The worst part of leaving a book in the middle of reading it in another country? The fact that you can't finish it until you finally go back to said country. BUT! I finally came back and was able to finish this omnibus. I think I have previously reviewed CLAMP mangas (I'm just not sure if it was here or someplace else) but I shall reiterate once more, they are simply amazing writers and their art is gorgeous (yes, big fan here, so be warned I may be a bit biased). Anyways, this is the continuation of a retelling of the vedas (ancient Sanskrit literature which I have never read, so I shall not compare), which deals more with heartfelt emotions than the first omnibus. The adventure continues onto the third, and final, omnibus where everything will be solved (I assume), but in this one you get more character development of the main protagonists and a new addition to the team (I do not want to name names because there may be someone reading who has not read the first) along with some reveals that may be shocking if you hadn't figured out what was going on at first encounter (you'll understand once you read it). Anyways, great read, but I pretty much say that about all CLAMP. Personally, do not like it as much as other CLAMP works but the story is fast-paced and engaging enough for me to want to continue reading. Highly recommend if you like CLAMP and have read other manga in general, not sure if I'd recommend this series to someone just starting, but, if you like "modern" fantasy and historic fantasy, then you may enjoy it. It's best if you gave it a try for yourself, though, you never know~

A really great follow up to the first omnibus. There wasn’t a single dull moment, and I’m really enjoying all the twists. This volume was very character focused, and all the development for both Yasha, Ashura, and the side characters was really fun to read. I’m honestly really invested in both the characters and the story at this point.

Goodness !!! that was actually really sad. Ahhh my heart I love lord Yasha and that storyline, definitely, a step up from the first volume. Waiting to see more about Taishakuten in the final volume. I have a feeling things are gonna go left for the main cast and I'm not ready

Amazing artwork, great story, it must be a CLAMP story. I never get tired of singing CLAMP's praises. In the world of manga they are a step above the rest.

I'm definitely enjoying it and I'm curious on where it's going....but the angst can get a little repetitive. New characters keep dying just to cause more angst and it's kinda gets old - you end up not getting attached to any of them because you know they are going to dye. That being said, it's still a fun and interesting manga.
