Rock star Kendrick Main is living the dream—or so it seems to the outside world.
In reality, he’s trapped in a lie that’s consuming his soul and destroying his family. For years, the owner of his record label has manipulated and blackmailed him, forcing him to deceive the world and hide the existence of those he loves the most: his wife and children.
Unable to see a way out that won’t destroy the lives of his bandmates and brothers, he loses himself in the bottle. His downward spiral ends when he wakes up in intensive care after a near-fatal drunken crash. With nothing left to lose, he buys out of his contract and announces the existence of his wife and kids to the waiting paparazzi.
Penniless and lost, he has nothing to show for his former success but a broken family and a mile-long list of people he’s let down. When the pain and suffering that surrounds him trickles down to his children, Kendrick vows to right his wrongs—hopefully taking down the man who ruined his life and winning his wife back in the process.
Kay lives in the Sunshine State with her husband and three kids. She’s had ideas for stories running through her head her entire life, but started writing seriously to retain her sanity as a stay at home mom. She’s random, opinionated, and a total science nerd. Her hobbies include reading, watching football, eating donuts, and singing badly.
This is a little different rock romance than what I’m used to but I have to say that it kept me captivated until the very end. Kendrick and his brothers are under a contract which includes that they stay single which proves to be a little tough seeing that Kendrick is married with three kids. He is pushed to the wall and finally breaks leaving him with his wife walking out, buying out his contract and attending AA meetings because it all just became too much. Be ready for a journey back from the bottom to wondering if his life will ever be complete again.
For a first time author I have to say that Ms. Halliday is now an author I will search out and I’m only hoping that there will be other books on the guys in the band because she did an excellent job of setting up some very interesting storylines.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley for a freely given and honest review.
This is a gem of a book and I'm going to be honest it totally surprised me it's a rock star book but without the usual sex drugs and rock and roll. The author did a great job of keeping the reader engaged in the story, the charcters are developed slowly throughout the book. I felt invested in the story from the start I wanted to know more about them and what had lead to their present situation. The pace of the story is perfect because it's not rushed we as the reader are not bombarded with information and we get to know a little about the other band members which sets us up nicely for further books. I was surprised to learn this was a debut author, great job Kay.
I actually don't have any criticism. I thought the flow was great and the character development was good for me. The characters are engaging, their inter relationships were clear and easy to understand, and they are easily relatable.
The author goes back to past events to explain what was happening in the present and what is a hoped for goal in the future. It was done in such a smooth fashion that some big name authors could take a lesson from her method.
I was very impressed with the content. The author keeps the reader interested and the story hard to put down. I got invested in these characters and was internally cheering for them to be successful in their quest for happiness and being able to have successful lives.
This is a book that engages you emotionally and rewards your investment with a feel good story and a believable happy ending that was well developed and planned, not just slapped on at the end.
Kendrick has hit rock bottom, being forced to leave the band he loves because of an awful contract that was forced upon him, the wife he loves to bits but he that he has had to hide from the world has enforced a separation and he’s in AA to try and stop his drinking after drunk driving and crashing. But once you hit rock bottom, the only way you can go is up right? Kendrick is determined to right all the wrongs, get back his beautiful wife Eliza and expose the person who helped destroy his band, family life and happiness.
“Whatever she’s looking for, I hope she finds it soon, because I’m dying without her.”
I have been really hooked into band reads at the moment and Interlude was definitely up there with some of the best I have read over the last month or so. It was slightly different to the others as well because we focused a lot on one main guy and how he was struggling. Kendrick was an interesting character with a lot of depth and I really felt for him throughout the story.
“Then I lean in and kiss her tenderly on the cheek. Like an addict, I just can’t seem to help myself. The only thing I crave more than alcohol is touching her.”
Kendrick was really the main character throughout. He was a complicated guy, he was really having a hard time of it and wasn’t afraid to show it and ask for help which I really admired. I loved his dedication to his wife Eliza and although he shouldn’t have shouldered all of the guilt he did, it was another admirable trait that he wanted to fix so many wrongs of those people in his life.
“Just the sound of my love’s name is enough to make me soften. He has no idea just how much I get it. No matter what happens with my marriage, for me there will never be any moving on from Eliza—she’s it for me.”
Then we had Eliza and all the other band members and their friends. I liked that Eliza stuck to her guns with their separation because she knew they needed it and that Kendrick needed to get better and happier without her constant support. The fact she was still supported him and helped him in his darkest moments showed the depth of their love for each other. All the other guys in the band had well developed personalities and their relationships with each other were entertaining to read and I can’t wait to read each of their stories.
“I sing of how my post-FourMain life has been waiting for me, and though I have no idea what lies ahead, I won’t be alone—my family, friends, and fans will support me.”
This wasn’t your classic rock and roll novel and instead we were able to really delve into one specific person and be with them step by step as they struggled and fought to put their life back together again. Because of this, I was easily dragged into and hooked on the read because I felt so invested in finding out in Kendrick would finally get back to a happy life. There was no shortage of plot lines to keep you entertained; trying to determine if Eliza and Kendrick would get back together, if the other guys in FourMain were hiding secrets themselves and what was going to happen when THAT book was released. The story flowed really well and the characters were easy to connect to and I am genuinely looking forward to coming back to the FourMain group and reading more about the other members.
This book was absolutely fantastic! I can't believe this is a debut book! I am just blown away. Could not put this book down!
5 Stars to Interlude (FourMain #1) by new author Kay Halliday.
First, this is not your typical rockstar romance starring sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. The books starts off with the hero, Kendrick a few steps above rock-bottom.
Second, this book is told in first-person perspective from Kendrick. The male POV is an element I prefer in a romance and I was so happy about reading Kendrick's. He is recovering from a near fatal automobile accident. Due to alcohol abuse, Kendrick loses almost everything important to him. I don't blame him at all for his circumstances. The blurb does a great job of setting this story up for you so I won't repeat any of that.
Third, I loved Kendrick! I often felt sympathy and empathy for him. I was worried. I felt protective. I wanted to fix all his problems but unfortunately Kendrick needed to stand on his own in order to feel good about himself AND be respected. The challenges facing him were difficult but he does find his HEA.
And that is what this book is all about...Kendrick's road to healing; finding out how to fix his life so he can get back what he lost. Kendrick's journey was slow, however I was completely engaged in his story and never once felt bored or frustrated with the pace.
The special touch within this story is all the support Kendrick receives. Kendrick, his brother and two cousins made up the famous band, FourMain. I loved every supportive character in this book. They stood together at every turn in a common goal. To support Kendrick. As a result, Kendrick knew if he didn't get himself together, there was still more he could lose. His family was all the incentive he needed.
Interlude is a standalone. Kendrick has his happy ending, however some of the circumstances that led to his downfall have yet to be resolved. I believe those circumstances will work their way through as the other members of FourMain have their stories told. I don't know whose story I'm most looking forward to. I loved all of the Main's. I just hope I won't have to wait too long.
I'll say it again...Interlude is a beautiful story, very well written and filled with those "feels' we all look for. I highly recommend you check this book out then add it to your TBRs. Read it soon; you will not be disappointed!
*I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My opinions are honest and unbiased.*
While reading Interlude by Kay Halliday, I could not stop thinking that this is an excellent novel to read on vacation. Not too serious, yet captivating and an easy read, Interlude is the perfect book to throw in your beach bag this summer!
I especially enjoyed the unusual topics covered in this book. I had never considered the music industry to be involved in shady business, nor have I read a novel about it, so I found the plot to be both unique and mysterious. Although, I did find it strange that Dick Landry—conniving music producer—never once appeared in the novel. For having such a strong hand in the lives of nearly every character, I felt that he should have been more developed and given a voice. To me, he is a flat, static, imaginary evil man. It would have been interesting to be able to consider his motivations and thoughts.
Nevertheless, I greatly appreciated the characterization of Kendrick. Stereotypically, alcoholic fathers are viewed as abusive, sorry excuses for men, but Halliday flipped this notion on its head. By portraying Kendrick as a loving father, despite alcoholism, she combatted that stereotype and exhibited the importance of understanding mental illness as opposed to stigmatizing it. I applaud Halliday for taking a part in revolutionizing the ways we understand mental illness today.
Moreover, the plot was predictable, yet I still found myself unable to put the book down. I connected with every character and truly rooted for the happy ending this novel provided me. Yes, the plot was straightforward, but not in a negative way. The only thing I am unsure of is what the rest of the books in this series will build upon. I feel that the book concluded cleanly, tying up loose ends, leaving little plot for a second or third book. I am interested to see what Kay Halliday can come up with next for her readers.
Interlude is a beautifully told, unusual rock star story. Kendrick Main has hit rock bottom. He used to be the lead singer of the famous band, FourMain, but when his wife left him, he crashed his truck, then went into rehab. He also had to buy out his contract with his sleazy record company, and now he's just existing, going to AA meetings, living in a trailer on his property, not with with his wife and children, and just trying to figure out what to do with himself and how to get his family back.
As much as I normally love the sexiness of most rock star romances, I love that that it isn't what Interlude is about. it's not about sex, drugs and rock n roll. It's about one man who happens to be a rock star, who is just trying to get his life back on track after it spiraled out of control. There is still lots of tension between Kendrick and his wife, but it's not presented graphically or in a steamy way, it's much more about the emotions, all the love between the two. I fell in love with Kendrick, and his wife Eliza and his three kids, his band, his family, pretty much everyone in the book, except of course the evil, snake in the grass former manager. Kendrick is a good guy, it just took him getting his head out of his ass to live up to it. And the fact that he had an amazing wife like Eliza to stay by his side, but not do everything for him even when everything inside her was screaming for her to, that took a strong backbone and I really admire that about her.
If you like your rock star love without all the craziness of tours, groupies and such, I highly recommend you pick up Interlude, you'll love it as much as I do.
Kudos, Kay Halliday on your amazing debut novel. I am looking very much to your next book!
I received an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.
I am blown away by this story and the wonderful characters the author has created. A first book, a five star hit. This rockstar love story is so unlike the norm that I encourage all readers to buy it, you will not be sorry. The Main boys are musicians in the finest sense of the word, fame and an unscrupulous record label have made their dream into a nightmare. The road home is long and painful but in the end, love and honor triumph. Read this book.
Kay Halliday wrote a really enjoyable, excellently paced book that kept me up long past when I should have been in bed. Good character development and believable characters without an excess of sex moving the story along. I am looking forward to reading the next stories she has planned for the brothers. Keep up the good work Kay! Thank.
Reviews on Goodreads. Amazon. And the book addicts
This book is the first book ever by this author... and I have to say it was fabulous and if it was this good I can see great things coming from her !!
It's not your typical drugs, sex, and rock and roll kinda book.. it was not what I expected when I found out it was about a band.. it was so much more. I really enjoyed it ..
It's more of the other side of being in a band then the typical ho- bag lead singer.. it's a family man trying to find his way back after a few unfortunate events..
This book is great! It is the debut novel from the author and it does not disappoint! It isn't your typical rockstar book filled with drugs, alcohol, sex, and rock & roll. Kendrick Main had it all, but walks away from it when the fame and fortune cost him everything. He refuses to accept that he's lost the people he loves the most forever. The book follows his journey as he climbs his way up from rock bottom and tries to put his life back together.
The book is engaging and well thought out, the plot is believable, and the characters are lovable. It is well written and edited without the errors found in so many self published books. A fantastic read from a promising new author!
This book captured my attention immediately. Good story line and lots of detail that draws you more into the story. It was like I was in the story watching everything that was happening. Can't wait to see more from this author.
Great new author! I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early release of Interlude & I couldn't put the book down, I was instantly drawn into Kendrick's story. Interlude is not your typical rock-n-roll love story. Kendrick isn't after the fame & glory - he's after his family & gave it all up for them. This story isn't about the rockstar, it's about the husband & father who has to win back his family. There's ups & downs in the story, lots of damage to be undone & wrongs to be made right. The book flows easily & there are some flashbacks that help build the backstory/whole picture. Kay Halliday's writing style draws you in & makes you feel for her characters. I was rooting for Kendrick from the get-go & can't wait to see what becomes of FourMain.
Kendrick is in a rock band with his brother and 2 cousins. They become a sensation overnight and their record label decides to sell them as sexy single guys. The trouble is, Kendrick is married to his high school sweetheart and has 3 kids ... and the record label insists he hides them. Kendrick becomes tired of living this way and turns to the bottle and then he hits rock bottom when his wife leaves him. Eliza is his rock and he can't phantom a life without her. When he crashes his truck while he is drunk, he finally decides to seek help. He joins AA and sees a therapist, in hopes of getting his wife and family back. This is Kendrick's story of life, love, failure and triumph. I highly recommend you take this journey with him ... you won't regret it!
This is a great first book for this new author. The story is so compelling I couldn't put it down. It's not your regular love story and it's easy to become attached to the characters. I can't wait for future books on Kipton, Mark and Mike.
I received an ARC copy from the author through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
Interlude is the debut book for this author and it didn't disappoint, I couldn't put it down. This book focuses on Kendrick the lead singer of the band Fourmain, his family and friends and what happens on the flip side of fame. I loved how all throughout his journey Kendrick never faulted from his path and that was the need for truth and to get his family back and the only way he can do this is be like a Phoenix and hit rock bottom and then rises from the ashes. I felt like I was on the sidelines in a cheerleading uniform cheering them on at every turn. I found the story engaging and well developed and it just flowed right off the page. I loved all the secondary characters and how they all interacted and I'm rather curious about the other band members. This is a story of second chances, love, truth, revenge and learning to live again and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for the rest of the guys.
Let me tell ya, I have a thing for rockstars! Kendrick, his brother and two cousins make up the FourMain band, or well, at least they used to. Kendrick Main was pushed over the edge by their sumbag record label owner.
He let alcohol take over his life and it almost costed him everything. He is on the journey to overcome everything that has happen. And to do that, he has to make a few things right in his life. 1. Stop drinking 2. Get his wife and kids back 3. Let the truth out of the bag.
He was forced to lie to the world and he HATED it! It is time to let the people know that has really been going on backstage.
My only complaint is that I need more! More of these guys! I want to know more about the FourMain guys!
I love the Rock Star genre, but this is a story about rock stars, not one set in the active touring/songwriting/recording world. I can't find any other books by Kay, so assume this is her debit novel and it's very well done for a first novel.
I did find though at times it dragged, usually I love long novels, but sometimes this one seemed as though they were hashing and rehashing things out so much I switched off. The same things came out in just slightly different way it felt. That's my main criticism about the book, its an excellent story but could (IMO of course! not everyones) have been tightened up a bit, with some parts made clearer, strengthened. I'm thinking of things such as exactly why Kendrick and Eliza were apart, when its clear they're both still deeply in love, he's visiting her and the kids most days. There's this undefinable "something" that's caused it and I found it frustrating not knowing what the issue was. I felt I'd missed reading a section maybe and even skimmed back to check. that carries on throughout the book and I just couldn't see why they were apart. Given its such a huge thing, a major plot in the story, I needed to know sooner, and when right near the end it finally comes out it felt wrong, very anti-climatic. Life just doesn't work like that, we don't know whats coming, how we'd react, we just have to roll with it.
The first half was a little slow for me, and I did skim a few scenes...*blush* wanting to get to the meat of the story. The last third was so perfect though, really set up the scenes, provided lots of excitement and drama, right up my street. I'm hoping in later books this part gets continued, its a potentially great story-line, providing lots of potentially vituperative and nasty scenes. This book has lots of good people in, and the label owner, a real unpleasant greedy controlling man, isn't actually in this novel, we just hear about him. I'd like to see some nasties - him or some like him - in later books to provide a balance to all the good characters in this one.
Overall an excellent first book and I look forward to more.
Stars: Four, a really interesting read, with lots of emotion and drama.

Kendrick Main has pretty much hit rock bottom. He is currently attending AA meetings after trying to chase down his "secret" wife Eliza while drunk after he quit Four Main, the rock band he was in with his brother Kipton and two cousins, Mark and Mike.
Kendrick was trying to follow the rules that were set out for him by Dick Landry, the owner of Serpent Records but he finally had enough. When his actions cost him his wife and children he vows to clean up and make things right again.
Will Kendrick be able to get his life cleaned up and follow the rules set out for him by escaping his record contract or will he get pushed down further by the one man who has set out to destroy him and everyone he loves?
I enjoyed this book although at times I did find it a little slow moving at the beginning and at various times within the book.
I liked the premise behind the story and I really enjoyed seeing Kendrick fight for what was important to him. I was a little surprised that Kendrick and his group let themselves
be controlled so much by their contract but at the same time when they were starting out I'm sure all they wanted to do was sing. I also found it odd that only he got out of the contract so the rest of them were still members of Four Main.
I enjoyed the love story between Eliza and Kendrick and how neither of them wanted to give up on them but Eliza was definitely putting a hold on their relationship until Kendrick sorted everything out. I found that part a little frustrating as it was obvious that he needed a little help with sorting out what was going on inside of his head.
I really enjoyed the rest of the members of the band and hearing how they were each manipulated by Dick and their contract. I am still super curious on who Sammi is involved in as I thought I had an idea but now I am not so sure.
I liked how Kendrick was able to reach his fans through music with Eliza's help and how he was able to get his story out there on what he was really going through. I am looking forward to the next story in the series.

Rock star Kendrick Main thought he was living the dream, until the price became too high, and he lost it all in the bottom of a bottle. He has nothing else to lose, so he gave it all up and walked away, in order to get his wife and kids back. Lost and penniless, he has a huge list of things he needs to right while trying to stay off the sauce. That's all I'm giving up, but know this, there is so much more to this story, and I don't want to shout out spoilers. HOLY AWESOME BATMAN! Interlude is a story that I never saw coming, and I was amazed, especially when I read at the end, that this is Kay Halliday's first book! I'm so glad that she's brought her talented writing style to the light, as I was instantly fully captivated from the very beginning. Plot was original, with a fast paced storyline that kept me turning the pages quickly. Kendrick was a realistic character that had me physically feeling his pain, and guilt, especially with his cravings, and panic attacks. It was especially refreshing to read about a rock god who didn't cheat on his wife, so no evil female adding to the chaos. The scenes with his band/family made for some great well placed humor that had me laughing in between leaky eyes. I'm so glad that I got to read a new talent, and cannot wait to see what she comes out with next! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND this amazing debut!
This story intrigued me right from the start and than to find out this was a debut book for the author I had to read it. I'm so glad I did because this story was amazing. Nothing like your average rock star story. The characters grow on you and develop beautifully. I don't want to say too much because I want you to go in as blind as possible because I did and I loved it. I can't wait to see what else comes from this author..
This review of Interlude by Kay Halliday is for The Sweet Spot Sisterhood Blog. Forced to live a lie, Rockstar Kendrick Main has hit rock bottom. His wife has just left him, taking their 3 children with her. Forced to live alone in a trailor of the outskirts of the Main property, Kendrick is set to take back over his life. His manager Dick at Serpent records is going down, starting with Kendrick buying out the rest of his contract. Kendrick is on a mission to get his family back, the family he had to hide from the public so that he would remain a sex symbol according to Dick. As you can imagine, Dick lives true to his name and Kendrick is also set to take Dick down as well.
Interlude is just book #1 of the FourMain series. I can't wait to see what is next!
