The whole world went a little sideways after the global collapse. Aside from general mayhem caused when TEOTWAWKI finally struck, there are other unexpected problems. The fabric of the universe ripped and portals to other dimensions sprang from the rifts. Treya signs on to be a bounty hunter with ARSA and has no idea what she's gotten herself into. In a world where criminals are hunted three times each, bad karma builds fast. Sooner or later, the hunters become the hunted.
Set in the upper Buffalo River wilderness area in northwest Arkansas. Martial law is in effect and the government has secrets. Perhaps it is the knowledge gained by the ARSA team that leads to their demise more than the karma. Luckily, Treya's mentor has outside connections to a rebel stronghold guarding a portal deep in the hollers of the Ozarks. Together they might all be able to escape the system.
Ima lives way off the beaten path in the Ozarks of northwest Arkansas. She and her husband are working toward self-reliance, sustainability, and may one day be completely off-grid. She lives where Nature is ever-present and her writing is infused with influence from the muses that spring from such places.
I congratulate this author on a solid start to an exciting series. I look forward to reading more! This first book introduces us to two interesting characters living in a post-collapsed society; existence is dark and highly controlled but the main character retains her heart and spunk. Can't wait to find out what comes next!
First Hunt begins in a town in the Ozarks, and moves to the true beauty of that part of the country. It has rich, strong characters that are easy to care about, and details that pull the reader into the action. The beginning explains the post-apocalyptic world, and moves smoothly onto the action of a manhunt in the Ozark Hills. The herb lore is interesting and accurate. This is a series and a writer that moved right to the top of my Always Buy list with one book.
It took me awhile to get into the book. I would have wanted to get a little bit more of background story to what happened when the SHTF so to speak, and how the new world worked. Still it was a really interesting read, and am looking forward to reading the next book.
I received First Hunt as a free copy from the author/publisher. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I really enjoyed the plot in this dystopian-style story. The characters were somewhat unfinished, although we got a good look into Treya's head. A lot of questions remain after the first book, and the action isn't always believable, but I enjoyed the read anyway.
What a weird story. This is the first book of the author that I've read, and I have to admit that it is probably the last as well. Just could not get comfortable with her writing style or the story, and the characters were very weird as well. Could not understand her descrs of what happened during the collapse, or really what the story is about.
