This was a good commentary. It does not stack up to Wenham's in terms of readability or Milgrom's in terms of depth (no one does). But it is easy enough to get through and is a solid if not spectacular commentary on Leviticus.

Few commentaries on the book of Leviticus can match the traditional evangelical approach to the book like this one by Richard Hess. This commentary should be consulted by every teacher of the book in the church or in the Bible college or seminary classroom. Throughout the volume Hess provides lucid description of the most recent archaeological finds that present some much needed illumination. He also cites pertinent contributions by both current and past scholars in commentaries, theological studies, and periodical literature. His handling of Hebrew word studies and key Hebrew phraseology is dependable and clear even for lay readers. Hess's contribution replaces the older work of R. Laird Harris in the earlier edition of Expositor's Bible Commentary (1990). However, I strongly recommend consulting both.
