The Doomed City
It is a mysterious city whose sun is switched on in the morning and switched off at night, bordered by an abyss on one side and an impossibly high wall on the other. Its inhabitants are people who were plucked from twentieth-century history at various times and places and left to govern themselves, advised by Mentors whose purpose seems inscrutable. This is life in the Experiment.
Andrei Voronin, a young astronomer plucked from Leningrad in the 1950s, is a die-hard believer in the Experiment, even though his first job in the city is as a garbage collector. As increasingly nightmarish scenarios begin to affect the city, he rises through the political hierarchy, with devastating effect.

Here is a fantastic, deep, and nuanced review of this work at the LA Review of books by a professor of Russian and Comparative literature. It delves into the background of the authors and the context they were writing in. I cannot hold a candle to it and highly recommend giving it a read.
With that being said I do have some thoughts on the experience of reading the book. This was my first foray into Soviet science fiction. It certainly had a different feel from its Western cousin. It was more overtly political, the setting felt much dingier, and the characters felt much more grounded. I really enjoyed it but I clearly missed lots of the message in light of reading the LA Review of Books review. While a working knowledge of Soviet society is not necessary to get absorbed in this book, I think it probably helps provide some context to the reader.
The setting of this book was really interesting: a city in a mysterious location where equally mysterious "mentors" oversee a sociological experiment whereby people from across the world and 20th century have volunteered to take part. "The Experiment is the Experiment" is repeated like a catechism throughout the book as a talisman to ward off the insanity that is unleashed on The City. From randomly appearing baboons, to the "sun" going out out for weeks, to really anything that goes wrong in the city. It is a dingier, run down, barely functioning city where jobs are randomly assigned and the decline in services and quality of life seems to be inexorable. See explore this world through the eyes of Andrei Voronin, a Lenningrad astronomer from 1951.
The story unfolds over some discrete time periods characterized by different jobs Voronin: trash-man, investigator, newspaper editor, counselor of a new, totalitarian government. He begins as an idealist young man who believed the (1950's Soviet) party line. By the end (after much, much unrest and upheaval) he is an embittered, scornful, and elitist totalitarian ruler. His transformation belies the risk of power and the corrupting nature of totalitarian systems and failed governments. Hope is in short supply in The City and it reflects on the citizenry's outlook .
The City is pretty clearly a critique of the Soviet system (so clearly the writers kept this story hidden for more than a decade before publishing in the twilight years of the Soviet System). This isn't the sort of ideas Western Sci-Fi tends to tackle. It struck me as much more biting and grounded than contemporary Western science fiction. Where Asimov and Heinlein wrote about far future worlds with heroic leading men saving the day, the Strugatsky brothers wrote about the here and now veiled in science fiction trappings. That lends itself to a very rough and gritty texture to the story. The characters are drawn from the common clay of humanity and are anything but the sleek space futuremen of the West.
The story does take some weird, surreal turns that was somewhat lost on me and the time jumps gloss over some important events that are only obliquely referred to. But it was still a very compelling and fascinating read that was a nice change of pace from my usual fare. A good addition to any sci-fi reader's reading library.
But seriously, read the LA Review of Books take on the book, it is really insightful and enlightening.

Depressing surreal social criticism that pretends to be a sci-fi. The parody on communism and soviet propaganda is quite obvious, but the story also takes deeper study of human society and nature. One star for misogyny, disgusting realism and unnecessary cruelty. Moreover authors didn't give any explanation to the world-building nor uncover any plot's mysteries.

перечитала, по-прежнему считаю лучшей книгой Стругацких и хочу написать более развёрнутый отзыв.
о чём книга? о совести, авторитаризме и власти.
главный герой, Андрей Воронин, страстный, искренний и добрый молодой коммунист, попадает в пространство некоего Эксперимента. цель его неясна, а главное его свойство состоит в том, что в Городе, где происходит действие, есть закон, по которому люди обязаны раз в некий период менять профессию.
Воронин приходит в Эксперимент строить коммунизм, упорядочивать хаос — в общем, улучшать мир. но идеализм его быстро начинает разрушаться. в Красном Здании он играет в шахматы со Сталиным и вдруг с ужасом понимает, что игра эта — кровавая и чудовищная. вокруг люди устраивают переворот, отменяют Эксперимент и устанавливают авторитарное (в лучшем случае) государство. Воронин закрепляется на вершине социальной иерархии, но чем стабильнее и статуснее его жизнь, тем сильнее он её ненавидит, потому что перестаёт видеть в ней смысл. чем выше он поднимается, тем ниже падает, испытывая отвращение к миру, себе и окружающим. заканчивается всё это сюрреалистической экспедицией на север, где Воронин метафорически низвергает с пьедесталов памятники вождей, окончательно отказываясь от любых авторитетов, и обнаруживает себя в идейном вакууме, который схлопывается вокруг него. «первый круг пройден».
СОВЕСТЬ
у каждого жителя Города есть Наставник — ангелическая фигура и внутренний голос, приходящий в трудную минуту с поддержкой и советом. почему-то и сам Воронин, и некоторые критики говорят, что Наставник воплощает его совесть. что, по-моему, прямо противоречит сюжету. ведь зачем является Наставник?
не растревожить, как подобает совести, а, наоборот, успокоить. и если в первой части он успокаивает вполне благородные сомнения Воронина насчёт Дональда, то во второй — ни много ни мало — убеждает, что отдать друга под пытки — это нормально. что нормально не позвать на ужин друга, с которым вы разошлись в социальных статусах. что Андрей поступает правильно.
короче, Наставник — это скорее Антисовесть. поддакивающий голос самоуспокоения.
но вот что интересно: он нужен Воронину. а это значит, что совесть у него есть — у него внутри, а не во внешнем Наставнике. а символом и средоточием её выступает то самое Красное Здание, ведь именно там он рефлексирует и ставит под сомнение свои идеалы. и недаром под конец книги Красное Здание пустеет, умирает и гниёт.
и вот что кажется мне тут самым интересным. Воронин — человек действия, исходно — убеждённый коммунист, который грезит о высшем благе для общества. он не то чтобы добрый, благородный и рефлексивный, и недаром (бывший) фашист Гейгер видит в нём родственную душу.
однако совесть есть у него, покуда есть эти — наивные и кровавые — идеалы. а когда совесть же заставляет его в них усомниться, потом — отказаться от них, а потом — променять на ковры и жизнь номенклатуры, сама она гибнет вместе с ними. на мой взгляд, это самая интересная и тонкая часть книги; получается, что инструмент уничтожения идеалов зашит в них самих, но когда они рушатся, они утаскивают совесть вслед за собой — и остаётся пустое унылое тело. быдло, по выражению самого Воронина.
думается, что если бы не экспедиция, он так бы и остался пустым. экспедиция, которую придумал не он, на которую его отправляет Гейгер. интересно, кстати, что циничные и политические мотивации (разведка, мол, уничтожение врагов) приписывает Гейгеру сам Воронин, в то время как он-то утверждает, что в самом деле хочет знать, «что в начале мира». не вышло ли так, что к концу повествования уже даже у Гейгера больше внутреннего содержания, чем у самого Воронина?
ВЛАСТЬ
а случилось бы у Воронина сомнение, переосмысление и крушение идеалов, если бы Город не переставлял постоянно людей местами, не ломал иерархии? вчера этот командовал тем, сегодня тот — этим. этот насильственный, навязанный социальный хаос ломает структуры и установки.
подавляющее большинство героев книги — жертвы или соучастники войн, преступлений и авторитарных режимов ХХ века, так что неудивительно, что дивный новый мир они в итоге строят соответствующий. но перетасовки оказывается достаточно, чтобы разломать идеологии внутри людей. а дальше — уж кому что останется.
ХРАМ
а что остаётся, когда совесть и рефлексия сломали твои идеалы и идеологии, а потом умерли вслед за ними сами? ответ «Града» — храм мировой культуры, то светлое и всеобщее, за что может зацепиться любой. в роли творца или потребителя. надо, впрочем, заметить, что авторы вихляются тут мыслью: в начале книги Изя издевается над Ворониным, рассказывая, как представлял того совокупляющимся с девицами и при этом вещавшим им, что делает он это не для удовольствия, а для блага всего человечества, то бишь Изя глумится над его наивной идейностью; но в конце он в свой храм включает и «большие поступки». а что есть большой поступок без идеологии? возможен ли он вообще?
в монологе в Пантеоне Воронин утверждает, что сама концепция величия нужна для того, чтобы у людей был некий «внутренний суд», сиречь та же совесть. снова повторяя проиллюстрированную Красным Зданием мысль о том, что она неотъемлема от идеологии. и величие без идеологии невозможно. и, получается, поступок.
и, получается, Храм?..
мне кажется, тут Стругацкие как-то сами отшатнулись от того, что пришли в финале к неприятному им самим слюнтяйски-интеллигентскому выводу — ну и смягчили. с художественной точки зрения это отлично: мысли Андрея и Изи в финале путаются, сливаются в общий монолог, они и сами как будто сливаются в одного человека, и вполне естественно, что в этом человеке есть ещё противоречия. да и хорошо, что книга обходится без однозначного и дидактичного финала, без жё��ткого ответа на жёсткий вопрос. так и должно быть в истории про сомнения.
ФИНАЛ И ФАНТДОПУЩЕНИЕ
Воронин доходит до начала мира, встречается там с самим собой и сам себя убивает. почему? потому что, как сам и говорит, не может принять концепцию Храма. пока он только прожил крушение идеалов и сумел поднять голову, не стать от этого окончательным животным. (хотя и это спорно — ведь стреляет в самого себя он в финале именно как безмозглое животное, так и не избывшее скудоумную агрессию, к которой весь он свёлся под конец своей истории.)
короткая виньетка в самом финале скупо раскрывает «тайное» фантдопущение книги: жители Города на самом деле не умирают, а после смерти возвращаются в тот момент, когда они решили в Город пойти. и сходят туда ещё не раз. и Эксперимент, видимо, состоит как раз в том, чтобы пропустить людей через эту мясорубку сколько надо раз, а потом — вернуть в реальность и посмотреть, кем они в ней станут и какой мир построят.
так вот: это фантдопущение обрамляет историю, но совсем мне не нравится и кажется почти лишним. потому, в частности, что девальвирует Изину смелость — куда интереснее этот физически никчёмный человек был бы, если бы не боялся смерти просто так, потому что у него есть Храм, а не потому что он знает о своём бессмертии в этом мире.
но зато это добавляет интересный пласт к теме власти. вот эта ломка и сомнение, которые Воронин проходит, причём не до конца, лишь до намёка и надежды на дальнейшее просветление — они вообще были бы возможны в реальном мире ХХ века с его фашизмом, коммунизмом, капитализмом и прочими жёсткими -измами, загоняющего человека то в кровь, то в тиски убеждений, то в гонку за коврами?

I often complain that so-called dystopias aren’t anything of the sort. Now this is what I call a dystopia! I spotted it on the library new acquisitions shelf and was instantly hooked by the statement, ‘A BOOK SO POLITICALLY RISKY THAT ITS VERY EXISTENCE WAS KEPT SECRET FOR SIXTEEN YEARS’ on the cover. To my mind, the mark of a really good dystopian novel is that it tells you a lot about the time that it was written, while also offering new significances as the decades pass. Although ‘The Doomed City’ was completed in 1972, it predicts that the Soviet Union would eventually be succeeded by a militaristic nationalist kleptocratic oligarchy which would distract the population from inequality and injustice with improved availability of consumer goods. That’s impressive. There is also a passage that immediately made me think of climate change:
The story concerns an isolated city, possibly on another planet or otherwise cut off from the rest of Earth, in which the Experiment takes place. The city’s residents are all volunteers, taken from across the world and from different years of the 20th century. None of them know what the Experiment is, how long it has been going on, or who the Mentors that run it are. It might be that the Experiment has already failed, or the Mentors have lost control of it. At the start of the novel, the city is arbitrarily invaded by baboons and residents are expected to rotate jobs regularly. The Experiment could be an allegory for any political ideology; capitalism as well as communism. The main character, Andrei, comes from the Soviet Union, however his circle of close friends includes a former Wehrmacht officer, an American, and a guy from China. This is one of many reasons that the Strugatsky brothers wisely decided the Soviet authorities would not appreciate their book and hid it until perestroika.
The plot centres on Andrei’s journey through various occupations and places, demonstrating how power corrupts despite (or because of) good intentions and kindness towards friends. Andrei’s experiences demonstrate a deep cynicism about ideology, politics, and the operation of institutions; another reason to hide the book from Soviet authorities. Power is shown to be brittle. It enables arbitrary acts of cruelty, without necessarily meaning that the one wielding it knows what the hell is going on or even what they’re trying to achieve. Andrei is a multifaceted and fascinating character, so his progress is compelling to read. His point of view is deeply visceral - he is always suffering from headaches, stomach pains, or wounds. There is an unsettling everyman quality to him that makes his actions all the more chilling. Moreover, the visceral elements of the narrative are complemented by more cerebral tangents, usually in the form of discussions with his friend Izya and others. They force Andrei to consider abstractions, rather than the immediate problems under his nose. As a result, the novel contains some very interesting reflections on art and culture. Izya’s theory of the temple and comments on the city having no creative residents are especially notable.
‘The Doomed City’ is a richly textured dystopia that vividly evokes its pocket world and covers a great deal of social, political, and cultural ground. There were undoubtedly plenty of Soviet-era references that went right over my head, however I found it much easier to appreciate than, say, Platonov’s The Foundation Pit (which it seemed to reference). There is a universality that gives it lasting relevance. It’s also engagingly, consistently weird. I’m giving it four stars rather than five, though, because it took me about fifty pages to get into and because the misogyny is relentless. All three of the named female characters have minor roles as sex objects, existing to be fucked and beaten up. Whether this was a deliberate commentary on gender roles or not, it is deeply unpleasant.
”Eventually society will come face-to-face with problems of such complexity that it will be beyond mankind’s power to solve them. And then so-called progress will stop.”
“Nonsense,” said Andrei. “Mankind doesn’t set itself problems that it can’t solve.”
“But I’m not talking about the problems that mankind sets itself,” Izya objected. “I’m talking about the problems mankind runs into. They just come up on their own. Mankind never set itself the problem of famine. It simply used to starve.”
The story concerns an isolated city, possibly on another planet or otherwise cut off from the rest of Earth, in which the Experiment takes place. The city’s residents are all volunteers, taken from across the world and from different years of the 20th century. None of them know what the Experiment is, how long it has been going on, or who the Mentors that run it are. It might be that the Experiment has already failed, or the Mentors have lost control of it. At the start of the novel, the city is arbitrarily invaded by baboons and residents are expected to rotate jobs regularly. The Experiment could be an allegory for any political ideology; capitalism as well as communism. The main character, Andrei, comes from the Soviet Union, however his circle of close friends includes a former Wehrmacht officer, an American, and a guy from China. This is one of many reasons that the Strugatsky brothers wisely decided the Soviet authorities would not appreciate their book and hid it until perestroika.
The plot centres on Andrei’s journey through various occupations and places, demonstrating how power corrupts despite (or because of) good intentions and kindness towards friends. Andrei’s experiences demonstrate a deep cynicism about ideology, politics, and the operation of institutions; another reason to hide the book from Soviet authorities. Power is shown to be brittle. It enables arbitrary acts of cruelty, without necessarily meaning that the one wielding it knows what the hell is going on or even what they’re trying to achieve. Andrei is a multifaceted and fascinating character, so his progress is compelling to read. His point of view is deeply visceral - he is always suffering from headaches, stomach pains, or wounds. Asks some great questions about humanity and civilisation but overly slow and slim on plot. I guess back when it was written would have created more of a controversial publication, especially in Russia.

Perskaičiau su didžiuliu malonumu. Paradoksalu, nes knyga, kaip jau suponuoja pavadinimas, yra visiškai tamsi -- bet autorių ironija, džiuginančiai taiklūs palyginimai ir sklandi kalba skaitymą man pavertė tikra lingvistine puota. Retai kada ant tokių gražių, neerzinančių knygų užtaikau, čia turbūt derėtų pasidžiaugti ir vertėjų bei redaktorių darbu.
Fantastiniai elementai -- vis užklumpantys iš pasalų, vaizdingi ir įtikinantys, todėl kartu su veikėjais tiesiog susitaikiau su Eksperimento realybe, ir laukiau, ką dar Eksperimentas (bei autorių fantazija) pamėtės -- Eksperimentas yra Eksperimentas.
Kūrinį galima vertinti kaip socializmo alegoriją (kritiką, parodiją) arba kaip bendražmogiškų egzistencinių išgyvenimų, nepavaldžių laikui ir socialinei santvarkai, nagrinėjimą. Gimiau jau postsovietinėje Lietuvoje, bet istorinis kontekstas per tėvų ir kitų vyresniųjų pasakojimus išvien lydėjo ir tebelydi mane, tad nėra sunku suprasti distopijos logiką. Kita vertus, man daug aktualesnis būtent egzistencinis knygos motyvas -- Andrejaus virsmai ir akistata su beprasmybe.
Kūrinio vyksmas lėtokas, bet vaizdinga, subalansuota kalba tai kompensuoja -- skaityti neprailgsta. Tiesa, antraplaniai veikėjai, jų motyvai atskleidžiami miglotai, nemažai jų man išvis susimaišė -- nežinau, ar aš neatidžiai skaičiau, ar taip objektyviai ir yra.

Many parts of this dense, philosophizing sci-fi magnum opus were amazing, near-comparable to a modern-day Tolstoy. The Doomed City is the bildungsroman of a very arrogant character named Andrei and his journey from Earth to a garbage collector in the Experiment (The Experiment is the Experiment -- is it a planet? a fish tank for aliens? another dimension/new galaxy? Who knows), to an investigator (whereat he loses his moral superiority in service to violence and The State), to an editor, to a state minister in an autocratic, populist, fascist regime. His journey traces man's rise to power, and offered me some personal empathy with and understanding of why and how a person would abandon their morals and essentially sell out for personal gain (a process we all undergo in varying ways within capitalism, whether we can admit it to ourselves or not).
I will ding half a star for the complete lack of believable female characters in favor of terribly gross, sexist stereotypes (a prostitute and a loose secretary are the only women here; this is embarrassing and doesn't reflect well on the otherwise amazing Strugatsky Brothers), as well as the hideous and never-ending casual anti-Semitism piled onto one of the main (and more likable) characters. Other than that? MAGNIFICENT.

Вообще, это выдающаяся книга, одна из тех, что оставила на мне перманентный след; книга, которая вросла с меня и как бы слилась со мной, стала частью моего восприятия. Я прочитал её много раз от корки до корки, слушал аудиоверсию, и не раз использовал отрывки из неё для иллюстрации своих мыслей во время лекций и бесед.
При том, что я никогда не был ни любителем фантастики как жанра, ни фанатом Стругацких (первая книга Сругацких, которая мне по-настоящему понравилась, была "Гадкие Лебеди", а вторая и последняя - "Град обреченный), и далек от восторженных отзывов только потому, что мне нравится автор, я даю этой книге высшую оценку.
Я воспринял и воспринимаю её вне контекста авторства, обстоятельств написания и критических заметок - она хороша сама по себе, самодостаточна. Наверное, я не буду её перечитывать - она, как я уже говорил, "вросла" в меня, и перечитывать её совсем не к чему.
Это одна из книг, которые обязательны для прочтения любого, кто читает по русски.

Most people know the Strugatsky brothers from their work Roadside Picnic, which is no surprise: it’s a short, accessible work with a great premise that has inspired a famous film and a video game series as well. Before now it was my favorite of their works, but The Doomed City, with its even greater creativity and complexity, has surpassed it. Its setting, characters, and ideas are all first-rate, and I highly recommend it.
The setting is the first striking thing in the book. The Mentors, mysterious individuals (likely not human) recruit people from all over the world to participate in an unexplained experiment. They transported the protagonist and millions of others to a mysterious city, bordered on one side by a bottomless chasm, and on the other side by an unscalable wall, with the city built upon the few kilometer-wide section in between. To the north of the city lies a desert, and to the south lies farmland and swamps with creatures not native to Earth. The sun does not rise or set, but is switched on and off. On top of that, there is a mysterious red building that moves around the city, yet another mystery in this strange world.
The first two thirds of the book is spent in this city, where jobs are assigned by lottery. Our protagonist Andrei (formerly an astronomer in the Soviet Union) is a garbage man at the story’s start, later becoming a detective/prosecutor, then a newspaper editor, and finally one of the city’s counselors. This allows the Strugatsky brothers to show the city’s operation and the developments of the story from a range of perspectives without having to switch the main character, a clever narrative device.
The mix of characters in the city from different places on Earth (who can all communicate with each other) is fascinating, communists from the Soviet Union mixing with former Nazi officers, mixing with characters from Asia and at least one American. Something I found surprising, given that the Strugatsky brothers lived through World War 2, was that the Nazis in The Doomed City are not depicted as pure evil, rather they are multifaceted characters, arguably protagonists in their own right. The book is full of different characters all expounding on their thoughts and philosophies, and the book does not flag such things as clearly “right” or “wrong.”
This ambiguity is personified by Andrei, who begins the novel an impassioned communist, but who becomes disenchanted with communism and the Mentor's experiment itself as the novel progresses. The last third of the book deals with an expedition into the desert to the north of the city and beyond, and in addition to a physical journey, it is also a journey for meaning for Andrei and the second protagonist Izya Katzman. Considering how skeptical the book ends up being about grand experiments in general, and with communism and the Soviet Union in particular, it’s no wonder that the Strugatsky brothers felt they had to hide the book for 25 years after its completion.
The Doomed City is far from flawless, however. Its preoccupation with ideas about government, individual purpose, and humanity lead to some passages that aren’t easy to get through. Some of the more abstract sequences, like the chess game and certain events during the expedition, are intentionally written not to be perfectly clear, and they are sure to confuse many readers. Additionally, and this is minor, I strongly disliked the baboon invasion of the city that opened the book. It was slapstick in a way that I felt established a misleading mood. I would have preferred a more serious event to first establish the strangeness of the city, for instance the comparable event in Roadside Picnic was a man touching a barely-visible cobweb and dying of a heart attack shortly thereafter. Also the ending page is a big “huh?”
I doubt The Doomed City will ever become as well-known as the work deserves—it has passages that are confusing and long speeches that are a slog, and the fact that the Strugatsky brothers had to sit on it for 25 years before publishing it didn’t help either—but at least I can do my part to encourage you to check it out, and stick with it beyond the first few chapters with the baboon invasion. Un romanzo importante in cui gli autori sfoggiano forse la loro cosmologia infernale più complessa. Una Città che non si trova nel nostro mondo, forse in un'altra dimensione. La popolazione ha aderito, volente o nolente a un grande Esperimento, i cui dettagli però non sono assolutamente noti. Proviene da epoche e luoghi diversi e tutti (misteriosamente) si capiscono, pur continuando ciascuno a parlare la propria lingua ("l'Esperimento è l'Esperimento). Ogni persona è assistita da un Mentore, un essere enigmatico che sembra avere poteri speciali. A est della città un precipizio senza fondo, a ovest un muro giallo che sembra innalzarsi oltre il cielo. Il sole è finto, la volta celeste è un inganno privo di stelle. Un misterioso edificio rosso cambia di posto e possenti statue si animano, un po' come il Cavaliere di Bronzo di pushkiniana memoria. Le occupazioni delle persone vengono turnate periodicamente e il protagonista (Andrej Voronin, sulla Terra un astronomo, comunista convinto e simpatizzante di Stalin) procede sul filo di un particolare cursus honorum: da netturbino fino a consigliere del presidente... un ex nazista che diventa addirittura suo amico. Le ideologie vacillano e crollano (da una parte all'altra), le utopie vengono rifiutate. Si finisce con il simpatizzare non con il protagonista, ma con un altro personaggio, Izja Katzmann, un ebreo sagace, intelligente, simpatico, studioso, profondo, sguaiato nei modi, perfino. Insieme a lui Voronin parte per una esplorazione verso quello che ritengono il nord, per tracciare una cartografia del mondo in cui vivono, per arrivare al limite di quel mondo incomprensibile. La direzione è Katzmann a darla: non si deve lavorare per imporre una data visione del mondo, si resterà sempre delusi. Occorre lavorare su sé stessi, sulla propria coscienza. Per essere pubblicato dovette attendere quasi 20 anni. I danni della censura hanno compromesso e alterato il corso della storia della fantascienza e della letteratura in generale (ricorda qualcosa il "Noi" di Zamjatin?). Ottima la traduzione. Bella anche la postfazione, molto utile. Anzi utilissima.

The Doomed City consists of people plucked out of various time periods, Bolsheviks from before and after the civil war, Wehrmacht soldiers, Allied officers, Japanese, Koreans, Jews. The City is in a state of slow societal decay, on one side it is hemmed in by an endlessly tall wall and on the other by a bottomless pit, all of which is guided by the enigmatic Experiment. Our Russian and staunchly marxist-leninist narrator makes his way up from garbage collector to second-hand man of The City. Along the way he makes friends with nazis and discovers that they see eye-to-eye on many things, regardless of official ideological antagonism. As he rises in society he undergoes a parallel evolution from naive idealist to an unprincipled and eventually directionless purveyor of status and bourgeoisie property, leading finally to a literal and figurative search for meaning.
The strugtaskys really know how to write satisfying endings! I admit that it felt a bit slow/disjointed at times, but in the end everything came together brilliantly. Decent knowledge of russian history is highly recommended as it is overflowing with satire and criticism of the civil war, handling of the peasants, purges, nomenklatura and soviet socialism in general, and ample references to unnamed but recognizable characters. The leaden frame of Stalin permeates these pages. What really stands out is the last part of the novel, where the narrator sets out on an expedition to find answers to the great Experiment. The journey leads back through time and our protagonist is confronted with his own contradicting ideals of human greatness and progress, it made a strong impression on me.

Շքեղ, շքեղ, շքեղ, վերջին մի երկու տարվա մեջ կարդացած ամենահավես ու ամենափոիլիսոփայական գիրքը, որը դեռ երկար մտածել կտա։ Վերջին գլուխը, որ, առանձին շեդեվր է։ Հավես է գրած շատ, ոչ մի վայրկյան չես ձանձրանում, մինչև վերջ սպասում ես, թե ինչ է լինելու, չնայած համարյա կռահում ես, ինչը ինչոց է, տեղ-տեղ ֆոնային թույն գիտելիք է պետք հասկանալու համար։ Մի խոսքով, խրախճանք։

This novel is about ideas and asks big questions. The plot baffled me at times and when it did “the experiment is the experiment” wasn’t a satisfactory answer. But that’s the point.
I was going to close it up a couple of times. The story meandered at times and stood still at others.. But after trudging through and thinking about the conversations that hold it together, I’ll actually read it again and soon. It’s the third book I’ve read by the Strugatsky brothers, and maybe my third favourite right now, but the others took some time for me to digest as well and with a pretty big reward each time.

Արդյո՞ք հնարավոր է ապրել առանց որոշակի նպատակի, առանց որևէ անհատի կամ գաղափարախոսության երկրպագելու։ Եվ իրոք, դեռ մանկուց են մեզ սովորեցնում, որ առանց նպատակի ապրելը մահ է, բայց արդյո՞ք այդպես է, թե՞ կյանքը շատ ավելին է, քան ժամանակավոր գաղափարախոսություններին հետևելը, կարիերա ստեղծելը և փող ու իշխանություն ձեռք բերելը։ Չէ՞ որ անխտիր բոլոր գաղափարախոսությունները դատապարտված են մի օր կորցնելու իրենց արդիականությունը։ Նույնիսկ հումանիզմը` Յուվալի ձևակերպմամբ ժամանակակից ամենատարածված կրոնը, մեր հեռավոր (գուցեև ոչ այնքան հեռավոր) սերունդներին մի օր կարող է այնքան անհեթեթ թվալ, որքան մեզ հեթանոսությունը, մարդկանց դասակարգերի բաժանելն ու կանանց տղամարդկանց ստորադասելը։
Կյանքը շատ ավելին է, անհամեմատ ավելին։

Моего и мне подобных… Я ведь и говорю-то об этом только с тобой и только теперь, потому что мне жалко стало тебя— вижу, что созрел человек, сжег все, чему поклонялся, а чему теперь поклоняться— не знает. А ты ведь без поклонения не можешь, ты это с молоком матери всосал— необходимость поклонения чему-нибудь или кому-нибудь. Тебе же навсегда вдолбили в голову, что ежели нет идеи, за которую стоит умереть, то тогда и жить не стоит вовсе. А ведь такие, как ты, добравшись до окончательного понимания, на страшные вещи способны. Либо он пустит себе пулю в лоб, либо подлецом сверхъестественным сделается— убежденным подлецом, принципиальным, бескорыстным подлецом, понимаешь?… Либо и того хуже: начнет мстить миру за то, что мир таков, каков он есть в действительности, а не согласуется с каким-ниб��дь там предначертанным идеалом… А идея храма, между прочим, хороша еще и тем, что умирать за нее просто-таки противопоказано. За нее жить надо. Каждый день жить, изо всех сил и на всю катушку…"

Monumentali knyga, ypač patiko košmariška, siurrealistiška romano erdvė, visi tie mirusių miestų peizažai, Geltonoji siena, Žydroji bedugnė, Raudonasis pastatas ir t.t. Labai įdomu bandyti visa tai įsivaizduoti, o drauge sau pačiam atsakyti į klausimą "kam?" Įspūdingos istorinės aplinkybės - tai, kad autoriai parašė šitą knygą, nors praktiškai neturėjo jokios vilties kada nors ją išleisti; keisti pojūčiai skaityti ją dabar, kaip laišką butelyje, o dar keisčiau tai, kad tos aprašomos nevilties ir absurdo būsenos atpažįstamos, artimos.

Ši knyga netelpa į 5* skalę. Žodis "stulbinanti", nuvalkiotas portalų antraštėse, atgauna prasmę, kai bandau nusakyti jausmą, kuriame ji mane tiesiog paskandina. Įdomi, daugiasluoksnė, prasminga, nepririšta prie konkrečios vietos ir laiko, neišsemiama. Skaitau ir negaliu ramiai išsėdėti, nes duria, į sielą ir į sėdmenis. Skaitau dar ir dar kartą. Neatpažįstu visų citatų ir neperprantu visų metaforų, bet nuo to tik dar geriau. Lyg skęsčiau simfonijoje, kur nieko nesuprantu, nežinau, ar verkti, ar juoktis, ar ploti, o tik noriu čia būti, nes akimirką man leista pajusti Didįjį Gėrį.
Pavydžiu tiems, kuriuos ši knyga dar susiras.

Neradau, kad kas mokėtų kaip Strugatskiai kurti pasaulius - absoliučiai svetimus ir nesuprantamus, bet tuo pat metu tokius pažįstamus, tokius jau pažįstamus, kad net hiperrealistinius. Reikalą gadina "filosofija", kuri gal yra nuoširdi, bet daugiau nieko. Ai, ir dialogai puikūs, už ką ačiū ir vertėjams!
Krūva žmonių gyvena "Eksperimento" pasaulyje, kurį iš vienos pusės supa siena, iš kitos - bedugnė, saulė įjungiama ir išjungiama tam tikromis valandomis, o dar kiekvienas turi tokį tik sau pačiam matomą dalbajobą "Auklėtoją". Auklėtojas gražiai su tavimi kalba, pritaria visiems tavo pasirinkimams, net akivaizdžiai blogiems, bet nieko apie eksperimentą negali atskleisti, kitaip nesigaus. "Kodėl pas mus viskas blogai, šiukšlių konteineriai kiauri, prie parduotuvės eilės, o mieste siaučia beždžionių gaujos?" - sakai tu. Auklėtojas šypsosi tokia budistine šypsena ir sako, eksperimentas toks.
Tai, kaip turbūt nesunkiai supratote, tai yra apie Sovietų sąjungą.
Bet ne tik!
Yra nepaprastai tikroviškos išgertuvių scenos, yra namas, kuris atsiranda įvairiose vietose, o į jį įėję dažniausiai nebegrįžta. Kiekvienas personažas kažkuo atgrasus, pagrindinis veikėjas - durnius (visi jam taip ir sako, "nu ir durnius tu"), kitas - fiziškai nemalonus, trečias - nacis ir t.t. Tik moterų nedaug ir jos visos yra... "paleistuvės". Toks tad charakterio bruožas.
Tai kas gi yra tas Eksperimentas (Eksperimentas pasakojimo viduje, ne Eksperimentas kaip Sovietų sąjungos metafora)? Vienas sako, kad čia ateiviai nusivežę į kitą planetą studijuoja žmonių elgesį, idant paskui galėtų užgrobti Žemę. Kitas sako, ne, čia Žemėje padaryta, o eksperimentatoriai - gal iš ateities? Trečiam visiškai aišku, kad čia yra Pragaras, ir tai tik pirmasis ratas. Ketvirtas sako, Eksperimentatoriai jau patys seniai nebežino, kas čia vyksta, ir nebesusitvarko.
Mūsų draugai durnius rusas ir fiziškai nemalonus smalsus žydas (atsiprašau, nu bet jie maždaug taip ir apibūdinti) išvyksta į ekspediciją šiaurėn. Ar jie ten suras atsakymus? Manau, labai neišspoilinsiu, jei pasakysiu, kad NE, tiesiog leisis vis labiau ir labiau į pokalbius apie gyvenimo prasmę ir idealios visuomenės santvarkos neįmanomybę, kol...
Dabar jau išspoilinsiu, bet parašysiu, ką manau apie pabaigą ir romano prielaidą - vien tam, kad gal kam bus įdomu pasižiūrėti, o gal kas nepatingės papasakoti savo versiją?
Tai dabar SPOOOIIILLERRIISS:

E niente, alla fine ho agognato la fine di questo libro.
È stata un'esperienza di lettura ondivaga: all'inizio mi interessava parecchio, poi mi sono trovato confuso e spaesato. Quindi ho pensato di aver preso le misure al libro, e che al netto di qualcosa di gestito molto male (il Palazzo Rosso) avevo capito cosa volevano fare gli autori, e di averci preso ritmo.
Ma poi c'è tutta la parte finale, con la spedizione che a tratti boccheggia e sembra poter ingranare senza mai però riuscirci davvero, sprofondando sempre più nel caos.
L'Esperimento è l'Esperimento, ma probabilmente anche il libro ne fa parte, e a malincuore devo dire che per quanto mi riguarda è un esperimento non riuscito.
Alla fine mi resta in testa solo confusione, e il ricordo di averne voluto finire la lettura il prima possibile per lasciarmelo alle spalle. Peccato.

Stulbinanti knyga. Pradedi žavėtis rašymo stiliumi ir su kiekvienu skyriumi dalykų, kuriais čia reikia žavėtis, daugėja. Visi posūkiai ne tik patys paperka, bet ir kaskart praturtina matymą to, kas buvo prieš tai. Ir kad įmanoma siužetą su tokia daugybe klausimų pabaigti kartu patenkinant smalsumą, bet nesugriaunant Eksperimento magijos, nesitikėjau. Rekomenduoju visiems ir bet kam.

Буває таке автор пише якийсь максимально обтічний і незрозумілий текст, але при цьому він, як письменник, є настільки впливовим і значним, що критики не можуть прямо сказати, що написане - відверто посередній текст. Тоді з'являються оці сентенції про "це найбільш філософський твір автора…" Але добре що у вас є я, людина яка завжди каже все як є, з відвертістю 5-річного малюка, що напудив в штани посеред вулиці і голосно каже про це мамі. Так от. "Град приречений" Аркадія і Бориса Стругацьких - це посередня книжка. Не погана, ні! Є в ній ця таємнича атмосфера приреченості, яка додає балів тексту, є алюзії на "комуністичний експеримент" є натяки і напівтони, в яких користувачі можуть шукати якісь свої тексти. Але одночасно з цим в книги не відчувається якоїсь цілісності. Уривчастість розділів в якийсь момент починає напружувати, бо головний герой - Андрій Воронін, про трансформацію якого розказують автори, ніби перестрибує в своєму розвитку від розділу до розділу. То він збирає сміття і щиро вірить в комунізм (тобто в Експеримент") а то він уже керівник газети і легко приймає популістичну владу свого знайомого який раптом стає президентом. А як з одного стану він перейшов в інший лишається тільки здогадуватися. Окремої уваги в цій книзі заслуговують стереотипи. Єврей Ізя - який хитрий і всезнаючий, вічно викручується з всіх негараздів, німець Фріц який намагається побудувати диктатуру, китаєць Ван який тихий і непоказний, майже непомітний. А ще росіянин "дядя Юра" росіянин який бухає і п'є чай з самоварів і нарешті сам герой Андрій Воронін - борець за справедливість, певно росіянин, яке який раптом в одній з глав починає співати українських пісень… Все це такі стереотипні, карикатурні персонажі, що інколи читати ставало відверто гидко. Ви можете сказати що я зараз занадто придираюся до авторів, що вони не мали на увазі нічого такого, не хотіли нікого образити і не ставили собі на меті в персонажі відобразити всі національні пороки того чи іншого народу. Проте якщо ми кажемо про письменників рівня Стругацьких, то хотілося б бачити більш продуманих героїв, а не набори стереотипів на двох ногах.
Багато х тих, хто хвалить цей твір, каже що автори спробували описати світ в якому над суспільством проводять певний великий Експеримент і що це ні до чого хорошого не призводить. Вони кажуть, що це була алюзія на комуністичний експеримент, на спробу побудови нового суспільства більшовиками. Так, можливо ця тема була цікава в 1975-му коли роман був написаний. Можливо тоді, аналіз причин комуністичних невдач був чимось цікавим і новаторським. Але не тепер. Зараз, в 2019-му році актуальності цієї книги я більше не бачу, а фантастика мусить лишатися актуальною довгий час, на це вона і фантастика, тому ж ми її і читаємо.
Я вважаю, що "Град приречений" найбільш невдалий твір Стругацьких з тих, що мені доводилося читати. Текст закінчується тим, що головний герой намагається дістатися до "краю світу" чи точніше "кінця Міста" і після цього прокидається в своїй квартирі, не розуміючи чи існувало це Місто насправді. З моїм читанням цієї книги відбулося все точно так само. Я дочитав її, прокинувся і не знаю навіщо ж я її читав. Хочеться думати що не читав, насправді, а витратив цей час якось корисніше

Not their best science-fiction novel (How can one top Roadside Picnic?) but a masterpiece of taking down the absurdity of the Soviet system and showing it for how ridiculous it was. No wonder they had to hide the manuscript for 16 years after it was finished. This book covers the whole kit-and -kaboodle for Stalinist governance, from the idea of changing nature of the human race from greed to cooperation, racing from insane action to insane action for the sake of 'progress,' the forced unconditional belief in a better future the system commands, the idea of the 'anticity,' or some unnamed enemy working against 'the experiment,' the ruthless methods of control that gradually become more commonplace and comforting to the protagonist, the 'Red Building' (the Kremlin, in my opinion) where the intelligentsia play the 'Grand Strategy,' grinding up human lives all for the sake of the success of 'the experiment,' tortured rationalizations for barbarity, I.e. The only rule of the experiment is the public good, revisionist history, riots for bread or class, the hubris of 'progress,' and mankind's attempt to make a 'mark' on the world. (That may be the longest sentence synopsis I am guilty of).

"The primary goal of our novel was not clear from the very beginning, but gradually assumed the following form: to demonstrate how, under the pressure of the circumstances of life, a young man's worldview radically changes, how he shifts from the position of an unshakeable fanatic to the condition of a man suspended, as it were, in an airless ideological void, without even the slightest purchase for his feet. A life trajectory very familiar to the authors, and one which we consider not merely dramatic but also instructive. After all, an entire generation traveled this path over the period from 1940 to 1985.
How to live in conditions of ideological vacuum? How and what for? In my opinion this question remains highly relevant even today—which is why City, despite being so vehemently politicized and so categorically of its own time, potentially remains of interest to the present-day reader—provided that this reader has any interest at all in problems of this kind."

Это моя первая прочитанная книга Стругацких и скорее всего еще не настало то время, когда я смогу понимать такие книги. Дело не в том что эти ребята плохо пишут, нет, наоборот, очень даже хорошо, но мне пришлось перечитывать много эпизодов, так как смысл повествования проскальзывал мимо меня.
Главный герой нейтрален. Он мне ни не понравился, но и симпатии не вызвал.
А вот кто понравился , так это Изя Кацман. Люблю хитрых, изворотливых персонажей.
Мне нравятся такие черты немцев как любовь к порядку, но Фриц, со своим стремлением к власти, мне не понравился.
Кого не хватило, так это дяди Юры. Мне он запомнился лишь как фермер с умными речами.
Женские персонажи - скудны и изображены как женщины легкого поведения, что не могло не огорчить.
Если кратко: Но тем не менее, книга довольно интересная и не такая скучная как роман "Американские боги" Нила Геймана, который я читала паралельно.

Если кратко: Но тем не менее, книга довольно интересная и не такая скучная как роман "Американские боги" Нила Геймана, который я читала паралельно.

Մի պահ ուզում էի չորս աստղ նշանակել, բայց հետո հասկացա, որ նման ստեղծագործությանը հինգից պակաս նշանակել չի կարելի: Որովհետև... Որովհետև հանճարեղ է:
Ստրուգացկի եղբայրները այս գրքով վերջակետ են դնում իրենց երկար ստեղծագործական ուղուն՝ լի գիտաֆանտաստիկայով, փիլիսոփայությամբ, հետաքրքիր պատմություններով և կերպարներով: Ու հա, շատ յուրահատուկ և բարձրակարգ վերջակետ են դնում:
Գիրքը, ըստ էության, ամբողջովին եղբայրների ոճն է ու նրանց մոտեցումը: Չնայած վերջին շրջանում նրանք փորձում էին շեղվել իրենց հիմնական ուղուց, դիմելով անգամ դետեկտիվի ժանրին, բայց նրանց մոտ դա լավ չէր ստացվում: Իսկ փիլիսոփայական գիտաֆանտաստիկան իսկը իրենցն է:
Ճիշտ է, գիրքը չես համեմատի Пикник на обочине, Трудно быть богом կամ թեկուզ Улитка на склоне գլուխգործոցների հետ, բայց որ հզորագույն ստեղծագործություն է, դա անկասկած:
Ի՞նչ կլինի, եթե մարդկանց որոշակի խմբի հավաքես մի քաղաքի մեջ, ու թողնես, որ իրենց համար սոցիալական միջավայր ստեղծես: Նրանց չես տալիս նպատակ, փոխարենը՝ ասում ես, որ իրենք մասնակցում են ինչ-որ անհասկանալի փորձի: Ինչպե՞ս կպահեն իրենց մարդիկ: Կստեղծե՞ն սոցիում: Կստեղծե՞ն իրենց համար նպատական: Իսկ կրո՞ն:
Կարդացեք այս գիրքը, անպայման կարդացեք, որովհետև անչափ շատ մտածելու նյութ է տալիս:

Vairāk sirreāla satīra nekā fantastika, bet tāpēc jo foršāka. Tāds trips, kurā jāiet bez īpašām gaidām uz skaidrību, sižetu un citām pierastām parādībām, tad var izbaudīt pat vietas, kas šķietami ievelkas un darbina motoru tukšgaitā.
Un nav brīnums, ka romāns iznāca tikai padomju laika beigās, jo noslēguma daļā ir šādi teksti: "Līdz pat šim laikam visi mēģinājumi padarīt cilvēcisko dzimumu vienlīdzīgu, nolikt visus vienā līmenī, lai būtu godīgi un taisnīgi, visi šie mēģinājumi ir beigušies, nocērtot galvas, kas izlīdušas virs kopējā līmeņa. Un viss. Bet pāri izlīdzinātajam laukam ātri jo ātri - kā vēža audzējs - sāk celties jaunās politiskās elites smakojošā piramīda, vēl pretīgāka par iepriekšējo..."
Un nav brīnums, ka romāns iznāca tikai padomju laika beigās, jo noslēguma daļā ir šādi teksti: "Līdz pat šim laikam visi mēģinājumi padarīt cilvēcisko dzimumu vienlīdzīgu, nolikt visus vienā līmenī, lai būtu godīgi un taisnīgi, visi šie mēģinājumi ir beigušies, nocērtot galvas, kas izlīdušas virs kopējā līmeņa. Un viss. Bet pāri izlīdzinātajam laukam ātri jo ātri - kā vēža audzējs - sāk celties jaunās politiskās elites smakojošā piramīda, vēl pretīgāka par iepriekšējo..."

A hard book to fully recommend as it’s dense - it reads like it more than c. 500 pages. It’s full of thinly veiled socio-political theorising which would have been explosive when written, hence the delay in publishing. I think it still has some good comments to make to a modern audience. Aside from the politics the general concept of the experiment in the doomed city was intriguing and I’d like to have explored that in a simpler fashion - certain scenes and set pieces were very imaginative and unique, even after all this time. All in all, a worthwhile but uneasy (in both sense of the word) read. I much preferred roadside picnic even though I still enjoyed this.
