D.P. Mitchell grew up in an obscure hamlet in the Catskill Mountains not far from where the Woodstock Festival was held. A high school graduate at age sixteen, Mitchell attended Vassar College, earning a degree in Chemistry after four hard fought years. That led unnaturally to a career in software building that had many twists and turns and eventually gave way to a longtime interest in writing.

Mitchell lives on the Oregon Coast with his wife: a nurse, stained-glass artist, gourmet cook and book editor. They are managed by three challenging cats and interact with the herds of deer and elk that frequently show up in their backyard.

This is a very smart book. What I mean by this is that Mr. Mitchell wrote this book so that the storyline was believable without being over the top or too technical. It just goes to show you that sometimes keeping things simple is the best.

The story started out strong and kept that pace throughout the whole story. Therefore, it was easy to read this book and stay in the moments. Additionally, it did not hurt that the characters were strong and engaging. I appreciated that besides Jack that there was plenty of strong, intelligent women featured in this book as well. Speaking of character, there was a good hand full of them but they were introduced not all at the same time. Although, even if they had been it was easy to kept them all straight with different voices.

Than there was the different agencies: Hyperion, CIA, Homeland Security, and Project Sentinel to name a few. I have read some books where it felt like there was too many competing agencies or that the people running them were not up to par. Yet, each agency had a purpose in this story. Fans of political or international thrillers will enjoy this book. Yet, I will not just limit the reading audience to these readers. Anyone looking for a good read in general should pick up a copy of this book.

When reading, I noted references to prior events and then saw that there is a book one - a novella of 71 pages The Tahitian Tangle . Apparently this revolves around Avery and Justine and I don’t think readers will miss the backstory by jumping into The Hyperion Web (Jack Crockett Series Book 2).

Regarding Hyperion, this book has an interesting story line with distinct characters. I sometimes found the narrative too telling, the action too cliche, and the characters pretty fun. The book, and flow, hits a sweet-spot near the end and sets up a continuation of the adventure. Although there is plenty remaining from Mitchell, readers won’t feel cheated by the ending. It is, in essence, a new beginning.

I will say this - the character names are silly: Pennywise, Foulweather and others. Why is the POTUS always referred to by his first, middle, and last name? Things like this and the narrative, along with ridiculous outcomes throughout the read screamed unpolished author.

BUT - the story was still quite fun. Special Ops, Shadow Ops, Conspiracy, Investigation, Death and destruction; enhanced with sentient-level AI, makes for a fun time.

I struggled between 2 and 3 stars. The story line saved it for me. This is a fun-enough read.

"The Race To Protect America"

This techno-thriller is exceptionally well written, filled with intrigue. There is mayhem, bravery, and even friendship to give you a chance to breathe. Jack Crockett is a former Special Force superior agent who still strives to keep America safe. The enemy is called Hyperion, a complex computer system which seeks to knock out a similar USA system called Project Sentinel. By order of the President, Avery Jones is driving his computer team forward to fight Hyperion with remarkable artificial intelligence called Moses ... the voice of the system which helps to deter Hyperion. Yes, our world needs to be saved, but how much more destruction will be done after Washington DC is attacked by bombs? This is a great story fast paced from cover to cover. I'm looking forward to the next novel ... it should be great! Highly recommend.

I pretty much cut my teeth on the books of Robert Ludlum, Ken Follett, Trevanian, Eric van Lustbader and John le Carre and have often lamented the dearth of books that left me with the same adrenaline rush that I got from those old books. Fortunately, there have been several new authors who have cropped up in recent years that I find myself having the same excitement for, and I'm glad to say that D.P. Mitchell is one of them. Fast-paced and suspenseful, "The Hyperion Web" is everything an action thriller should be. With a complex plot, multi-faceted characters, secret organizations and world-jumping, this book has it all. So often I've opened a thriller, expecting too much maybe, and have been sadly disappointed by the end of the first couple of chapters. You will not be disappointed by this book. It literally pulls you along for the ride and remains readable and intelligent throughout. I'm really looking forward to going back and reading the first book in this series, as well as any others that Mr. Mitchell writes.

I was provided with a copy by the author and I voluntarily chose to review it.

The Hyperion is filled with well developed characters. The main character, Jack Crockett, formerly of Special Forces, is teamed up with Pico, a huge black man who is an ex-Marine. Together with the help of some other team members, they are in a rush against time to discover who is behind the attacks on Washington, D.C. and what Hyperion is. Avery Jones, who heads up the Sentinel Project, helps develop Moses, an artificial intelligence with unusual capabilities.

This was a very fast paced thriller with lots of unexpected twists and turns that kept me guessing. It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next and I found myself totally immersed in the story. I'm hoping there will be a sequel.

I would highly recommend this to Jack Higgins or Tom Clancy fans.

A shadowy organization, The Hyperion, launches a deadly attack on the United States. Unlike previous terrorist attacks, though, no one claims responsibility, or issues a public statement. The president is worried, because the effect of the attack is putting him in a position where he might have to resign and turn the Oval Office over to his vice president, a man whose politics is markedly different from his own.
He turns to ex-NFL player, ex-Special Forces soldier, Jack Crockett, now a one-eyed mercenary for hire, to find and punish the perpetrators. With the help of an intelligence agent he rescued from a group of thugs, and a behemoth of a former Marine, Jack dives into the murky waters of international terrorism, where he becomes the shark looking for prey.
The Hyperion Web by D.P. Mitchell is a tense, high-stakes drama set against the backdrop of international and domestic intrigue, high-tech warfare, and double dealing aplenty. This story has elements of The Manchurian Candidate and Rambo and is only marred, in my humble opinion, by the frequency of head hopping among the vast cast of characters. That won’t, however, keep you from enjoying it.
